The Designers Challenge series was released in 2008. For this series, Mattel went outside the company and got designers from automakers Ford, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Lotus, Honda, and GM to design a Hot Wheels casting. Hot Wheels designer Jun Imai designed the last casting in the series, the HW40.

This car was GM's entry. It was designed by Amaury Diaz-Serrano, who got inspiration from the original Corvette and several speed record cars from the thirties. With roof-mounted torpedoes, side fender loops, and a 1500-hp V16 engine, this car was made to look like a gladiator ready for battle.

A livery very similar to this was produced in the 2013 Track Attack series.
