The building was opened in 1886 and replaced the former first theater of the city. It is located on a focal point on Hviezdoslavovo Námestie, an important square in the city.

Magyarul:
A Szlovák Nemzeti Színház 1886-ban a korábbi, 1776-ban alapított Rendi Színház helyén eklektikus stílusban épült régi műemlék épülete a belvárosban, a Hviezdoslav-téren.
A pozsonyi Szlovák Nemzeti Színház egyrészt Szlovákia legrégibb és legprofesszionálisabb színháza, másrészt két épülete van – az egyik a történelmi épület, melyet 1884–86-ban a Hviezdoslav-téren építettek a Fellner & Helmer Iroda Városi Színházaként, a másik pedig egy modern épület és 2007. óta áll a városközponttól nem messze, a Duna part közelében. A színház megnyitóján 1886. szeptember 22-én Erkel Ferenc: Bánk bán című darabját adták elő.
