Having looked at the map data, they have added a new line to map generation, witch none of the maps I have in this mod currently have. As such, that would be why it crashes.
I don't want to kill peoples games, who are still using the 2.8.0 version, SO, like I did with 1.9.0, I will make a NEW mod for 3.0.0 and up. I will add a link to it in the description when its done, witch should be in the next 24 hours. I just need to get the time to do it.
As a quick PSA, if you don't know how to revert back to the older versions of the game, you simply go to propertys, and then go to the beta bit. All the versions, right back to 1.0.0, are available to play, if you want to go and see how the game played on release. :)
I have not actually update the mod for a while, so it could be changes to the way things work. I will have a look at it when I get home, as I am about to head to work. It could be as simple as just changing the version number, or it could be something else.
As to the gameplay itself, that's down to your hardware + how the game itself handles it. Better the CPU the better your performance will be. I'm not sure, at least for the high star count maps, how much an update will do to it. For lower star counts, it might have some improvements
The other side of the coin tho is how many AI's you have. Not just enemies, but also fleets, how big they are and so on, is all going to factor into how well your PC runs the game. So, realisticly how well your PC runs the maps is down to your PC more than it is the game or the mod.
