EMD Tunnel Motors

The term tunnel motors was a nickname describing the SD45T-2 and later SD40T-2, which featured air-intakes near the bottom of the carbody and radiators high on the hood. Beeing built for for western carriers like Southern Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande Western, they proved sccessfull in solving overheating issues in tunnels and snowsheds which earlier diesel locomotives experiencend. Both the SD45T-2 and the SD40T-2 became icons of mountain railroading and sold more than 500 times.
