Era - 1990s - UFC / Pride FC

Trained in shoot style pro wrestling, Ken Shamrock was a pioneer of MMA as one of the co-founders of Pancrase Fighting Systems. He ended up leaving in 1996, heading to the United States and joining the first UFC tournament, tapping out Pat Smith in the first round to score the first submission in UFC history. He lost to Royce Gracie in the second round, unable to deal with Gracie's gi. Shamrock would later face Gracie again at UFC 5, going to a draw, but his high water mark came at the next event where he defeated Dan Severn to win the UFC Superfight Championship.
