I mean, CA did a good job making land battle maps, but river battles are pretty bland - there's always two crossings of around the same size. Instead, maybe you could make some one-crossing only river battles, but also like a river with 4-8 crossing points which you all have to guard at once. Or maybe even have some river battles where you have a sneaky, one unit crossing at the side, so that people have to pay attention.
Also, don't limit yourself to just rivers, maybe a thin mountain pass through which you need to fight, especially in the dwarven provinces? I mean a bit like underway battles, but then a mountain pass above ground. Or like a river of lava or a glacier?
