The Cataphract's Crimson Court trinkets represent two items from the Cataphract's past; the Bloody Banner, and War Commendation.

War Commendation makes it more difficult to recover stress, offset somewhat by the high scouting chance and increased virtue chance -- in the event your Cataphract hits 100 stress, it's a 50/50 chance they become afflicted or virtued.

Bloody Banner further enhances the Cataphract's back row damage, pairing well with the Scorched Saddle for maximum damage, at the cost of a whopping 60% increased stress gain.

Taken together they reward a player for rolling the dice with afflictions, although the risk of causing further harm to a party while afflicted might be too much for more cautious players.
