The Old Camp and Fire Magician Scroll + LOTS of loot!
Ok you got a message to deliver to the fire mages. Problem is their in the castles courtyard in the Old Camp and you need to either pay 1000 ore or join a faction. That takes awhile to complete your very first quest. Here's the smart way.

When you go up to the courtyard gate guards, unsheath your weapon. They will do the same and command you to put yours away. Run past them, their speaking to you trigger is unable to work while they're threatened. Just unsheath, run past abit, sheath it and head over to the magicians. Now you have a series of rewards to pick but the best choice is the mana potion. This is the permanant reward you will have throughout the game because it permanantly increases your mana. All the other rewards are only temporary power ups.

Now that we got past those guards how about we go into the Ore Barons building? Do the same weapon trick to get in. And to your left is a series of swords. Take them, you'll get beaten senseless and they will take what little ore you had but they wont take back the swords or kill you. This allows you to steal alot of good swords that will be useful throughout chapter 1, especially the Battle Swords.

Ok so we got the swords, now what? Well the ore barons have lots of locked chests with pre-set lock combo's of lefts and rights. Save your game before you start going into the rooms and picking the locks. Try saving after each successful chest unlocked and reload after each failure. If you do this, you can clear out the entire building of it's treasure and find a powerful amulet that gives you great defense boosts and 3 or so potions permanantly increasing your health.

The Guard barracks has alot of nice treasure for you to pick too. Just rinse and repeat the process and you'll walk out with LOTS of good weapons, amulets, perm stat boosting items and so on. You can buy more lockpicks if you need to but I find this way quicker.
Free armor in the Beginning (Before joining a camp)
Hi, I'm adding more details into Gothic one including a none glitch but often overlooked trick of how to obtain free armor. When you would go to the Old Camp You will see a man named Thorus, he wants you to fight another character named Mordrag. Tell him you'll do it and find Mordrag abit past the traders. He's the man in blue armor so it's easy to spot.

Instead of fighting Mordrag talk to him about him having a problem and then possibly joining the new camp. He will escort you to the new camp entrance, on the way he will kill every monster along the way, earning you free experience.

After talking to him he will give you a ring to give to a NPC named Lares. Anyway you make your way inside, avoid the Rogues/Thugs by the campfire past the rice collectors. You'll see a large cave (This is the new camp), keep going past that and follow the road to the new camps mine. Here you need to get past a wolf and some molerats. Save before going far, if your still weak (Low STR) and have no sword training I'd suggest running past the wolf while it's busy with the molerats. Once your there you'll want to look for a man named Swiney, he will give you a Digger Dress for free. You;ll notice him near the new mine gates smoking and not digging.

To be frank, the armor isn't that special. The best Amulet you got from a previous entry I mentioned offers better protection, the best armor Chapter 1 offers is the Novice Loincloth a gate guard at the Sect Camp sells for 500 gold. It's just a teeny bit better then what Fisk had for 500. This entry is more trivial then helpful, sorry guys.
Minmaxing your stats
Alright so the stats are abit curious as it's easy to get plenty of levels with the exploit mentioned in the guide, at least at first and trying to 100% it. But there's a way to go beyond, even if only alittle.

Firstly your stats, STR, DEX, Mana? The cap of training them is 100 Almost 9 levels worth of LP to max out. Rings/Amulets of course can help.

Well earlier I mentioned how to get your hand on several potions that boost these stats, despite the cap. You can't train your HP so feel free to guzzle those HP Boosting ones as soon as you find them. But this will lead you to having to make a choice to either save them to bypass the 100 cap, or use them to have more LP for skills/magic training.

A majority of skills require 10 LP (1 entire level) but Weapon Mastery and Magic is constantly increasing in price. The most expensive being Magic as you need to unlock spell circles for Runes, and Mana to cast said runes.

Personally I favored using them as I got them. The potions are well hidden and admittedly I can't remember many of them. But lemme list a few

The Potions I mentioned in my first chapter
Lares from the New Camp has a HP+ Potion on his shelf, you might have to hop on his table to target it (Targeting Loot is buggy in this game)
In a chest infront of Stone from the old camps inner courtyard has 1 but it needs a key I think you can get later on in the story.
Kor Kalom from the Sect Camp can offer a Mana+ Potion as a reward involving the main quest line
I believe the ancient ruins you'll come across later on in the story with Gorn has 1
Ditto for another ancient ruins in the orc lands Lester goes with you
There's a Quest at the New Camp Entrance from a guy named Horatio, do not insult him!. He'll give you +5 STR if you can give him a reason to teach you. You'll wanna talk to the named peasants in the field AND the one hidden in the Bar at the new camp. He's gonna be upstairs behind the counter.

Sorry for being vague but it's honestly been over 10 years since I 100% the game, heh. There really isn't that many of them so there's no real reason to go beyond 100 in a stat.
The Test of Faith
Ok to do the Test of Faith, Deigo tells you to go to the old mine, tell Ian he sent you and bring the list back. Now what you can do to earn more exp is go to the new camp and give Lares the list. He'll edit it to give to you to give to Deigo. Doing this earns you extra EXP, makes the choice between Old and New camp easier and you earn like 21 or so items of goods.

You will miss out on plenty of free EXP and items if you just deliver it to Deigo.
Potential Pickpocketing? (Not fully tested)
Okay so say something is coming up. A phone call or unexpected visit, something is drawing you away from the game. You thought you hit the pause button to take care of stuff while your guy is at the New Camp.

Well this is when the AI becomes secretly active, I only experienced it ONCE in all my hours of playing the game but while I was AFK, my guy stood idle in 1 spot like a statue. When I came back I noticed while selling stuff that alot of my Ore went missing.

Pissed I decided to start attacking random rogues to 'grind' out the difference with their loot. THen I notice one of them had like alot of ore on him and realize the sumbitch robbed me.

I'm not sure if this can happen in the Old/Swamp Camps but apparantly it is possible to be pickpocketed if your inactive enough and forgot to hit the pause button. However this only happened once and haven't been properly tested.

AS for the skill itself you can learn, honestly it's not very useful. It's easy for your guy to become a juggernaut brute in the game. Hell, within the first chapter I was knocking out and robbing guards. So instead of pickpocketing and risking getting caught, I just beat the generic NPC's to take their things. Named ones will get theirs in time, don't worry, including Gomez.
My weapon!
If you manage to steal certain weapons and equip them, the NPC will actually call you out on it and attack you.

Not all seem to do this, or at least notice it very quickly. It's pretty funny hearing Diego get uppity about you holding his Bow.

To steal the weapon of certain unkillable NPC's you'll have to enter Marvin mode (enter your stats screen and type marvin and hit B.) hit O while targetting them to take control and just make them drop it. Picking it up usually triggers them attacking too though.
Monsters and Platforms
Gothic has been around for many years and back in the day obvious tricks and glitches were difficult to take care of. This trick will teach you how to kill monsters while they can't fight back.

The majority of monsters can only attack you if your on the same ground level as them. So if say you hopped ontop of a few tree branches large enough to support you without making you fall when making your attack animations, you can attack monsters with say a bow or spells without fear of retaliation.

You will also notice if your out in deep water you cannot attack, the same is true for monsters. They will follow you into the water so lure them to the deep end and then nudge to the water level where you can unsheath your weapon. They will sit there and take your abuse till death.

WARNING: If you use the deep water trick on NPC's, it'll instantly kill them.
Double Experience Glitch
This only works on People

When you first defeat a enemy with say a sword they're rendered unconscious and you earn experience. BUT if you allow them to get back up and give them time to pick up their weapon you can kill them with your bow or a spell to earn the same experience again.

if you repeat it with your sword on the same person and finish him off with the sword, you wont earn anymore experience.
Unwinnable by Insanity
Alright, as I mentioned in the Double EXP glitch, you can knock out human NPC's for EXP, and then shoot them for an extra EXP dosage. But there's an important fact you should know.

Some Plot important characters do NOT have Godmode enabled. That means you can beat these guys up AND kill them.

Diego for example has Godmode, you cannot hurt him, no matter how strong you get.
Raven has no Godmode, but is super tough and needed for the Old Camp story as he's your boss.
Lares, the man you need to recruit you and give you quests in the New Camp does not. You can mug and kill him, opening a massive can of worms to worry bout if you were connected to New Camp.

Some NPC's have Godmode on for no particular reason. They can have no relevance to any quest and be immortal for awhile. Obvious example is The Bart Man in the Ore Barons house.

SO you can essentially break the game as early as Chapter 1 by killing named Shadows, killing Lars, and I'm sure most of the Guru's are killable.
Scar's Sword (Best 1 hander)
Believe it or not it IS possible to get the best 1h-sword AND Crossbows in the game as early as Chapter 1. Downside is you can't train in Crossbow use unless you're a Guard of the Old Camp.

Inside the Ore Baron's house is a Ore Baron named Scar, one of Gomez's Henchmen. He actually does NOT have Godmode on at all. If you gained a signifigant level like say 8 and been pooling a vast majority of it into Strength, you can injure him. He's a master swordsman though so you'll also wanna invest at least lvl 1 One-Handed training for 10 LP.

Realistically you should be about lvl 8 with 70-80 STR and lvl 1 One Handed

Obviously you'll wanna save before trying. His sword does roughly 85 Damage but requires 70 STR. It's easier to do alot of damage by unsheating your weapon, provoke him, sheath, quickly un-sheath as he's putting his away and get several free shots.

Sometimes his friends jump in to help, sometimes they wont. Either way if you're determined you can take his sword and be set for 1 handeds for the entire game. But let's examine the other weapons.

Crossbow of War, Scar's Crossbow does 100 damage and need 55 DEX, very nice. Hit's slightly harder then the best bow.

Raven's Right does 70 damage and need 55 STR, not bad, it's notable for having a very visible blade, both sheathed and unsheathed.

Arto's Sword is the weakest at about 60 damage or so needing 50 STR, very generic looking. Lare's Axe from the New Camp does the same damage but needs 5 less STR.

Barthelo's sword is named Paw Punch and has similar stats to Arto's, Unlike the others he has Godmode on at least in Chapter 1

Lastly, Innos' Rage owned by Gomez, 110 damage, needing 90 STR. He has Godmode for a vast majority of chapters. You'll have a pretty good idea when this wears off though. Besides Uriziel fully restored, it's the strongest 2 hander in the game.
List of Armor you can't get...
There's a series of armor you cannot obtain without any mods or cheat codes. Probably dumb I point this out but hey, here's a list of armor you can't obtain.

Heavy Guard Armor (Biggest disappointment of the game)
Royal Guard Armor (The yellow armor the guards throwing you in had)
Robe of State (Fancy looking clothes one of the ore barons wear)
Ore Baron Armor
Guru's Robe (In the Sect Camp you can only be a Novice and then Templar)
High Robe of the Gurus (Sect Camp Leaders robe)
Judge Robe (The judge from the beginning with the royal guards)
The Magic Knight glitch
Hey, Tomha here to explain how to become a Magician of Fire and a Guard in the old camp. To do this you need to do the following.

- Be a member of the Old Camp ( A Shadow )
- At the beginning of Chapter 2 after obtaining the Focus Stone you'll need to go find a Minecrawler Nest in the Old Mine.
- After you kill the minecrawler queen head to the Old Camp and save your game.

Make your way to Thorus and speak with him. Instead of saying you want to be a guard, tell him you want to be a magician. Head to the fire mages, Milten will tell you Corristo wants to speak with you. Go to Corristo and complete the test...

Tell him you DID work for the Sect Camp, that their god is Innos, and to be humble in the face of magic.

Now he will go upstairs and wait for you. Go back to Thorus and tell him you want to be a guard. You will then need to go to Stone who's across from the fire mages. He'll give you guard armor and a weapon. Head back to the fire mages and you will become a Fire Mage.

This will give you the Fire Mage armor, and the Light Guard armor + a Guard Sword for free.
Transformation Spells for Dummies
At some point you'll obtain spell scrolls that let you transform into animals. The list I know are as follows...

Bloodfly
Scavanger
Meatbug
Shadowbeast
Molerat
Wolf

Now when you enter these forms, you obtain all their stats and more importantly gain special perks. Firstly, you are an animal, the other animals will not attack you (Unless you're a scavenger who ran into a wolf or shadowbeast, in which case...you be dinner) and are usually abit faster for traveling on foot but here's 2 very special bits.

1) Bloodflies are immune to fall damage
2) Meatbugs can creep under certain things, including the Old Camp's gates when they get locked up late game, this is useful late game for raiding before you get teleportation runes.

Now 2 more things are worth noting. Firstly as an animal, NPC's will fight you (Unless your a Meatbug, nobody attacks them.) And the game forgets to tell you how to exit the form, PRESS ENTER to end the spell.

As for how to get these scrolls, well if you can't find them from a Mage Merchant then chances are you'll have to do some good old fashioned exploration. Old ruins are a good place to search for them, just be ready for trouble though.
Gold Coins, what they do?
Absolutely nothing. You can get thousands of coins and it means nothing. Most likely these are just remnants of a discarded concept for the game.

Essentially everything else is real currency. Personally I like selling weapons and food instead of my ore.
GLITCH DUNGEON
In the beginning of the game, there's a mineshaft that's blocked by a metallic gate. If you use the Marvin code and K through it, you can enter a "Dungeon" of nothingness. No way out, and you're guy is drowning. Filled with nothing but blackness.

The purpose for this entire thing is unknown. Curiously enough all the other mineshafts you've seen that are caved in are NOT dungeon warps/entrances. Just this first one you run into.
Secret Gang of Thugs
Infront of the damaged bridge there's a forest. Straight ahead there'll by a massive Y Path filled with Snappers, really nasty raptors with no arms. To the left is a troll that you're meant to fight later on in a quest, but to the right is a camp.

This camp is filled with "Thugs" and 1 named Rogue who arre all hostile. They are worth about 120 EXP each and are abit stronger then the standard Rogues you encountered. They have no purpose in the game besides being EXP cattle as even the loot is normal rogue gear. Even stranger is that they're so far out of the way and blocked off by more dangeorus monsters that I don't know what their purpose was going to be.

I theorize that they are a remnant of a Quest that was never finished and was simply dropped there or something.
The Golem Puzzle for dummies
Late in the game you will be asked to find a Necromancer named Xardas. BUT his path is guarded by a series of Golems. The Golems need to be destroyed by a specific attack. You MUST slay these golems to make progress so here is the summed up guide.

Stone Golem: Kill it with a mace
Fire Golem: Kill it with a ice spell
Ice Golem: Kill it with a fire spell

Last time I did it, one shot killed all 3 with the tool. After that there's a demon, he's actually a friendly though so don't kill him.
The Stranger Book 1
Alright folks, this is going to be a special bit I'm adding as this is easily the most difficult but optional quest in the entire game. A series of books are hidden in the Colony, and each one has a journal entry filled with riddles and clue leading to the next one. The books only spawn 1 at a time so you CANNOT find say volume 4 before 1, ever. Find book 1, then you'll move on to 2. But hey, where the heck is book 1? Well I'll tell you. Due to the quest being a scavenger hunt I'd advice skipping this right now if you want it to still be a challenge after I tell you the first book.

Alright, to have an idea of what I'm talking about, you'll need to have explored the island a decent bit. Smart idea as you also need a good bit of manpower for what's to come. There's a broken tower by the beach with a wrecked ship that goes deep underground. In the tower you'll encounter a large number of nasty skeletons and prepare to crap yourself...the skeleton mage.

The Skeletons might be a harmless, generic foe in most games, but here...these suckers hit hard and can take a good bit of abuse. Save your game before you come here by the way, I'll explain why in abit.

Anyway, the skeletons will wield rusty weapons but still do lots of danage so dispatch them how you see fit. But the Mage is a problem all of his own. Firstly, the mage can summon more skeletons (which yield EXP for you to exploit) and can spam ice blast. That mage can crash your game if you try to exploit his summoning power. Anyway, kill the mage and loot his dumbass and the book is yours.

Read the book and begin the quest, somewhere in the world the second volume has spawned. Can you find the other 4 books on your own? I was able to, but dang that is hard. Follow me to The Stranger's Book Readings incase you just want to read the riddles, or skip to The Stranger's Other Books for the locations.
The Stranger's Book Readings
This is what each of the books say

"He who is willing to
renounce all depravity
and wanders on the path
of righteousness, shall
know where the source
of my power lies
hidden. So that he might
use it to break the chains
of this world and prove
worthy to reicive
Chromanin.

The Wise One sees to
having a general
overview before he
dedicates himself to his
next mission." - Book 1

"Carried from the tides
of time, Chromanin's
visions have opened my
eyes. No price could be
high enough to ever
renounce my faith in
them, for it touched my
heart to intensely.

What is divided will be
reuineted, after being
massively separated
for a short time." - Book 2

"Oh, Ancient Gods. How
can it be that a man like
me, simple and unworthy,
may reicive such a great a
legacy. I feel great
fear to lose all of it
again by a slight
faliering in word or
deed.

The wise fisherman
occasionally tries to get
lucky on the other side
of the lake." - Book 3

"I dare not hope to be in
the presence of
Chromanin one day. Gone
are the days of wasting
and wailing. So easy it
will be to achieve
absolute perfection. I'm
not far from it.

Long forgotten are the
deeds of those who once
where aboard." - Book 4

"But I shall not walk this
path alone. This honor is
mine. I must accept to
share the power within
myself with the worthy
ones who are to come and
find me. I hope they're
coming soon...

You will find me where
it all began." - Book 5
The Strangers other books
Book 1 was already mentioned on how to get.

Book 2 is in the orc lands somewhere. Specifically it'll be high up where you will find a tower and ruins, but not a fortress/castle. You'll eventually need to come to these ruins and fight orcs to meet up with a FRIENDLY orc named Urshak. Look around for the book and proceed to finding book 3.

Book 3 will be more tricky to spot but do you remember when you started the game? There was a river, with a tiny bridge leading to the Old Camp. In the river there was a tiny, tiny island with a big rock, around that is where the book is. Might have some Scavengers and/or Bloodflies.

Book 4 Outside the New Camp are some old, busted up Fisherman huts. Across from there is a beach spot with lurkers, the book is there.

Book 5 is probably the most difficult one to figure out because of how vague the tip was...well remember the Tower book 1 was hidden in? There was a ship wreck at the beach right next to it. Watch out for the Fire Lizards.

Book 6, return to the tower, where it all began, where you found the first book.

Warning on the Final Boss
Okay to minimize spoilers on who the final boss is, I'm just gonna call it FB. First of all, FB is not alone. He's got a tiny army of weaklings to distract you while he spams fireballs.

Second, you CANNOT hurt him. He has plot armor (AKA God Mode.) So don't bother attacking him, and especially DO NOT MELEE HIM! He has an aura that will make you permanently fall asleep, might as well have died there mate...So how do you kill him?

Well before reaching him you had to fight these undead, named baddies who were guarding ancient swords. These swords aren't real weapons but you need them, all 5 of them. Once you get all 5 and get rid of the weaklings, you can go to each of these 5 pedistal things containing a demonic heart. Each Sword will destroy a heart and summon a powerful demon (except the 5th). Use a sword, slay a demon, do it 5 times and the FB is defeated and you just beat the game.

I honestly can't remember where all 5 are, sorry. But to be fair it's not that hard to find them so...happy hunting.

Gold coins are not a discarded concept: if a dead body has a gold coin in their inventory, they will not despawn. It's a trick the devs used to keep bodies where they should be :hmm:

When you first go to the old mine, you can provoke some templars from the walkway above, by shooting them with arrows. They get agitated but go below you and fall all the way down. Then you go down and pick up their awesome 2h swords. The yellow one is the strongest.
You can also easily kill Jackal in the Old camp and take his crossbow - stand by some hut but so that when he pulls out his crossbow he can't shoot you because of the obstacle, and then kill him with your bow, it could take some time and reloading but can be done.
This way you can have two extremely powerful weapons very early on.

Another note worth mentioning is Lee's Axe... which you can get as soon as you are able to defeat him. Second only in damage to Innos Rage from Gomez, which is unobtainable until very late game, around the time you get Uriziel. If you join the Rogues and are level 10 or above, you can instantly then join the Mercs via Lee and train in 2-handed swords - all in Chapter 1.

Just FYI: You CAN get the Heavy Guard Armour without cheating (works with several others too... unfortunately Gomez and the Ore Barons are too high level to do it without cheating in mana). Trick is to get a "Control" scroll or rune, with sufficient mana to channel one of the guards with crossbows in the old camp (the ones standing up on buildings around the edge). The higher level the enemy, the more mana you need. I *think* around 70 is required for the guards with the armour. Once in control, you will need a downed NPC to "use" (since you cannot access your inventory when in control of an NPC). Trick here is to access the downed NPC and then drop the Heavy Guard Armour. Press Enter to return to yourself and pick it up. Job done.

This is the best Gothic 1 guide you can ever find.

Going beyond 100 strength completely breaks the game, you should save up all + strength items untill you hit 100. I think the +5 strength from one of the rice farmers in new camp is the only boost you need to get before reaching 100. And I think the mushroom mana boost was in Gothic 1 too. If you do it right you can reach like 200 strength which increases your close combat damage to ridiculous levels. Uriziel sword doesn't benefit from it though as it does some kind of magic dmg.
