pick the unreal 5 version in the properties, its so damn good!

Don't let my steam hours fool you, I probably have over 1K hours across countless playthroughs...

Gothic 1 is one of the best rpg's ever made, followed by Gothic 2, the type of games that defined the mechanics of an entire genre! I grew up playing this game with my uncle so I could talk about it for hours, instead I want to focus on two things.

First, the immersion is incredible. The game quickly pulls you into the world of the Colony with its deadly and unfriendly atmosphere. The three main camps, their inhabitants and their daily routines, the monsters filling the beautiful locations of the map, and above all the lore you uncover through dialogues with NPCs make the world feel deeply believable.

The second thing I want to mention is that the progression system is extremely satisfying; every upgrade to skills, armor and weapons feels meaningful and rewarding and fills you with joy making the struggles of the gameplay bearable and actually addictive!

Of course, this is a game from 2001 and it has its weaknesses; for me, the lack of quests in the late game makes it feel a bit empty, though it is not enough to make you pass on the game.

The last thing I want to mention is that there is now a semi-official patch of Gothic 1 which remasters the game allowing it to run on unreal engine along with many quality-of-life improvements to gameplay and UI interactions. You can find it in Steam → Properties → Betas → "unrealbeta".

Now is the perfect time to experience it yourself, especially with the remake coming in the next few months.
