Yeah works for me, fun to play against AI on this map
In terms of playing against computers, the AI hardly sends out land units. They will continuously raid your shores as they do in other water-based maps, but beyond that, they won't attack you. On the other hand, attacking enemies with land units is nearly impossible, since they have their ~40-ship navy just waiting around their base.
You could always cut through the forest, but that's time consuming. It has worked for me, but I did this just to pass the time as the Wonder timer went down. If you'd like to easily win, build a Wonder.
Mind you, I've only played with Hard AI.
I guess my suggestion, if OP would like to improve the map for the AI, would be to have paths of shallows that connect through the central gold mine location. However, I think that'd defeat the purpose of the map.
