I base them on low residential neighborhoods in germany. "DHH" stands for "Doppelhaushälfte" which means "duplex house". They are very common in the north of germany. Often you can find whole neighborhoods full of them since they were build as as workmen's dwellings for nearby factories. Depending on when they were built and how generous the factory owners were they are still in good shape and some owners often modernize their houses over the years. Originally they also have very large backyards so the families could grow their own food right in the city but over time a lot of the lots got split up to fit more houses there. I find those type of neighborhoods very charming.
