Kristofferson was once an exciting rookie who had almost everything to succeed. He was sent to Japan to toughen up and was seriously injured by Gordon "The Glutton" Butcher.

When he came back he was forced to adapt his style and, whilst the fans still wanted to cheer him, he no longer felt he needed their praise.

Instead, his motivation is to toughen up the rest of the locker-room the same way he was.
