Pit people is a game I really want to recommend, but has a lot of major problems
that will keep it down.

To start off I was looking through common criticism of the game. and I found the most common 2 problems, is the game being repetitive, and the game not being very in depth, or having shallow gameplay. The reason people find this game so repetitive is because this game was designed so you will win with any strategy, and with any teamcomp in pve. even though this game has all the different units with all their different strengths and weaknesses, the average player has no real opportunity to explore this in pve, they can't really explore how in depth the game can be, with all the different strategies and teamcomps you can do. the pve both never ramps high enough if difficulty, or at least not often enough for the average player to come across it, and even the few times the game does get difficult enough, if they do have trouble with it, there best choice won't be counter pick units, it will be their highest level units. The game actually incentives using the same teamcomp because of the leveling system. your highest level units will outperform your lower level ones. so the game punishes you from trying something new. No ♥♥♥♥ everyone finds the game repetitive. The entire leveling system is just poor game design, and the way the game counters this is by making pve overall way easier than it needs to be, so you can get away with just about anything. so people will either mindlessly through stuff together, and just place everything in range to attack something. or they will stick with all their highest level units, and never explore other units. This is why people think the game is shallow and repetitive. either keep doing what works, and just do whatever because you can. insane mode is hardly more difficult and gives hardly any more loot, and that loot probably won't be what you are looking for, so there isn't really a point in ever turning it on. and permadeath mode is just grindy. because you need to keep capturing new stuff.

this game really really shines in its pvp. pvp is the best place to try out the game mechanics, and strategies of this game. the fact that both teams will be the same level, and same slot worth of units. you can't just bring in whatever and have it work all the time, and you can't just go to your high levels when you struggle. it's about just actual teamcomp and positioning if you want to do well. However this game has almost no incentive to play pvp, and because pvp is so different the pve is unappealing to a lot of people. all you can get is some extra item drops that you can also get from unfair challenges. The leaderboard isn't an incentive because it just shows who plays the most pvp, or unfair challenge that day. also there is a huge barrier of entry of actually exploring the pvp of this game, because you have to play a ton of pve first, to get enough different units and items, to actually start exploring interesting teamcomps and strategies. and if you actually want to play some pvp, good luck finding anyone to play with, the pvp lobby is dead. once I had sat in the pvp lobby for 8 hours straight, 3 days back to back and found 0 people to play pvp with in that time, it is incredibly sad.

given what the pve system is, I think that the quests and missions are decently well done for what the game is, even though most of it still suffers from how repetitive the game inherently is. though lack any replayability. humor is subjective, it's not all good, but I think at least through most of the main story, and a decent amount of the side quests the humor lands(but definitely not all of it). but the side missions lack replayability, and the main story isn't worth playing through more than twice. The only incentive to redo missions/quests is if you want to capture all the items, but considering most items are just cosmetic, there are so many. it's not an incentive for most people. so outside of pvp the game doesn't have very much replayability, unless you really like capturing tinted units.
also the game just feels incomplete. it has unobtainable items, it has 3 empty music slots for the town music. a lot of the animations don't feel finished, like the ranged human melee attack. among other stuff. the game just isn't finished and the behemoth has made it seem like they don't care about adding anything to this game anymore, their most recent update. update 7, was also a horrible update. adding the worst quest in the game, along with some other bad quests. along with adding bear blood rain randomly causing random damage and movement, they made sure it didn't happen on any quests they didn't want it to, but they decided to let it happen in pvp. making it so pvp matches can be decided by something completely out of the players control. along with 2 new cyclops weapons, thousand shards, and the storm stick, which are way better than anything else in pvp, and now what's left of this games pvp community calls them cancer sticks. and makes us wonder if the devs ever bothered play testing.

even though pvp is the best part of the game, it isn't perfect. excluding cancer sticks, pvp still isn't terribly well balanced, once you play extensively you will see some team comps are just clearly way better than others. a lot of items and units are completely outclassed by other stuff in pvp. units you choose as leader is the least balanced thing in the game, you have no reason to hero anything other than mushrooms cupcakes, and occasionally humans. Rainbow horses are unhealthy for pvp, they are literally just rng units, it makes it so rng can determine the outcome of the match pretty much no matter what. yes the game is inherently heavily rng, but unicorns take it to too much of a degree where it's almost a coin flip as to who wins if there is one in play. and gnomes are almost entirely useless in pvp, pvp has problems forsure on a competitive level.

There once was a time when I thought this game could come back, a time when I thought if just the behemoth added new update 8, that focused almost entirely on pvp. making the leaderboards better measure skill instead of play time, make pvp easier to get into, and make it more competitive. increase incentives to play pvp, I once though that would be enough to bring some life into the game, but I feel this is no longer the case, update 7 stepped on what was left of a dying community. I know multiple competitive pvpers who leave this game, and will never return because of how bad that update was, this game was objectively better pre update 7. Early access also killed this game, most of what this game has to offer existed during early access. The height of the community existed during early access, it started dropping before the game came out, and never picked up since, and at this point never will, as much as I want it too. I wasn't even able to play back then either, as I had a mac, I figured this game would be out on mac by the time of its official release, it wasn't not, and still isn't out on mac or linux. so there is another potential player base gone, keeping this game's numbers even lower. The behemoth has for the most part moved on from this game development wise. to work on alien hominid invasions, so we aren't getting anything new anytime soon anyways, if ever.

So would I recommend this game? I really really want to say yes, even with the problems the pvp has, there are still hours upon hours of fun to be had in pvp. I myself have well more than 2000 hours in pvp alone, and that was all well after the majority of this game's community has left, but I know the community has only died further since then. realistically, it is impossible for you to get anything out of pvp anymore with how dead it is. so if I'm to be in good faith I can only really recommend this game for its pve. which all it really has going for it's kinda funny story mode, and a few decent side quests, and that's is it.

This is a piece of history.

My guy, you have over 3000 hours in this game. You played another 1000 hours after you said you wouldn't recommend it? How is it possible to get that many hours out of a game? I mean, I read your review, but... Still man... C'mon, have some perspective.

Personally I don't agree with the overall verdict, but I completely understand your points and perspective here. It's certainly not a game for everyone, and one with undeniable issues, but I still had a lot of fun in it. For me, Pit People was more of a zen experience, it didn't bother me that most fights weren't much of a challenge, but as a fan of other comparable games like Fire Emblem, I understand where the disappointment comes from. If I got this kind of experience from a Fire Emblem game, I'd probably not have been nearly as forgiving. This is a good read for anyone curious on the state of the game's PvP.

@foreground static maybe i was a little bit overly hard on the pve. but it still suffers from a lot of problems, most the side quests are still bad. and absolutely no replayablity, for any of the quests. i guess this is a subjective thing, but even in my early hours with the game, i disliked a lot of the quests, and didn't understand good strategy what so ever until i started playing pvp. pve still has major problems even without 2k+ hours. while yes a lot of the better quests do add new mechanics to explore, it pretty much never focuses on the strategy and teamcomp aspect of it. all units more or less feel the same in pve still. also i bet the game could get still very easily get stale for you soon pve wise.

@knottyribcages how so?

Yikes. Sounds like a you problem...

I feel like a lot of the problems you mention only become problems if you pour 2000+ hours into the game. If you're not just doing random battles over and over again trying to farm tints or items, I feel like it doesn't at all get stale. The first playthrough of the game is a blast, filled with that classic Behemoth humor, and after the campaign there are tons of side quests that keep adding new challenge and different mechanics to make combat actually different. If you finish the game and want to play it a bunch more, there is so much content to explore and to fulfill your needs. I feel like you're detracting way too many points based on A: how you turned it into a grind, and B: how other players aren't showing as much interest in the pvp as you want them to. Giving negative rep to a game because you played it way more than anyone ever intended is just unfair to the developers, and to the potential consumers who get turned off from what could have been a great 40+ hours of their life

yeah, one thing i didnt say about it is, i cant stand pve in this game anymore. i dont have 100% in this game yet, and i probably never will pve is just so annoying. i cant get myself to do it anymore. it almost feels like homework bad. its busy work

I really like your point in the reason why pve repetitive, makes total sense.

the 2 comments written before this were before i updated my review. so they are out dated. unless they update them without me knowing.

also it only gives you so much to write, so i had to cut a few things out. like i wanted to expand upon my verdict. saying more on why i would want to recomend the game, the game is really indepth pvp wise. exploring how indepth is how i know the game is unbalanced in the first place. it is really fun to do that. and i when i started writing this review i wasnt even sure i was going to say i dont recommend it, i really want this community to grow, become something greater then this dead thing it is now. i do truly love this game, and wish it the best. but realistically this game is never coming back. as much as i want it too.

but hey, maybe im wrong. maybe there is a chance.
