TLDR:
This game worked half-heartedly on a story and not at all enough on bugs and balancing. While I still enjoyed playing it a bit, it appears to me this was not at all in a finished state, from start to finish. I bought the game for $7.50, and at that price, I honestly feel neutral about having gotten it. I'm not upset, nor am I pleased, but that's not a great starting point for most wanting to enjoy a game, so if you aren't getting it for cheap, save your money.


My thoughts on the story:
it baffles me as to the use of the weirdest names for some of the "spirits" while at the same time never explaining why the game is even called Children of Morta. I can think of only one place in the entire game where they use the name Morta in passing. Side note to people writing fantasy, if you're going to use made up names for things, make sure they all are distinct and perhaps have some sort of onomatopoeia or real word equivalent so that people can associate them with the right characters rather than having it all run confusingly together.

The reason for why the beginning of the game even occurs at all is unexplained and so is the supposed cycle* they mumble about a couple times. In regards to the ending, I don't real feel like I'm spoiling much, but it feels greatly unsatisfying (with it being nothing more than the seeming embrace of toxic relationships and cycle of abuse*). The character Apan appears seemingly without reason whatsoever and then is never really addressed again. I feel like perhaps someone had a vision for something but couldn't get it all out, and as a result, the whole thing reads like a bad fan-fic fantasy tale of someone's personal relationship problems with an abusive ex.


Gameplay:
The game manages to glitch out on you at inopportune times and I once had to re-beat the game because I accidentally hit tab just before a cut scene began and I was forced to stare at a menu while the game went into a locked in video that I could only hear. I had to force close the game in order to do anything, came back in and none of said progress had saved.

Zooming in on the house after every cut scene, why?! It's slow and annoying. Let people skip things they've seen a million times. The movement in the house should also be controlled with WASD since that's how it is everywhere else. Instead I have to deal with the camera almost always drifting. And in the basement, it was far worse, the camera absolutely would NOT let me see the right side and drifted low and to the left constantly. I was just barely able to click on the first dungeon gate, thank goodness.

In addition to the this, not all abilities in the game are created equal by any means and this is also true of the characters. This also bears in the boss fights and different zones. The first boss of the game is the most difficult and the others, with one or two exceptions, are complete cake-walks. The final battle is drawn out and massively underwhelming.


Conclusion:
This game is fun in its own small, quirky way. However, it really feels like it needs some more love poured into it and some better writing to take it to the level of being a good game. I still had my fun for the price point, but it felt like a very forced game.

The game isn't very clear with you in a lot of small ways while it asks you to make permanent choices. Additionally, I thought the redneck part would be a little wacky and fun, but it was more tiresome than anything and I honestly think it would have been a bit more interesting if your "character" were a bit more themed out to the rest of the game, especially given the fact that you're still also a mummy.

If they'd leaned into that aspect with having him mumble and moan like he was a reanimated mummy, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Instead, I found the voice lines very off-putting. It's like they were half-way split on making Duke Nukem and their own thing and it fell to hard into the nostalgia category without enough substance.

But that's just my personal opinion. ;D

This is exactly the type of strong, in-depth game-play we need in VR! I really hope major studios see this game and start dipping their toes in the water.

The visuals are truly stunning. Everywhere you go feels like a lived-in, actualized space. It makes you really feel like you're in Half-Life.

This is one of the best multiplayer platform games I've EVER played. You can play it quite a bit without it getting old because of how much can be modified. A lot of fun for a small group of people.

I have plenty of small issue with the construction of this game, however, I was willing overlook all that until recently.

I'm not letting anyone sneak extra crap (an entire launcher) onto my machine under the guise of a mere update. Screw you Rockstar, I'm uninstalling and I'm done with your games for good.

Out of a love for the old Myst games, I bought and played this and I almost could not have been more disappointed. The visual aspects of this game are very interesting, however, that's where my fun ended.

The puzzles are either trivially easy or extremely difficult while adding MASSIVE amounts of game-time to each puzzle because you're forced to make long, arbitrary marches to places to solve things, all the while having level loading in between.

I'm being extremely serious, there are a few puzzles in this game that require you load back and forth between maps in excess of 8 times in both directions. It's completely inexcusable for a puzzle game...

I try to support indie developers whenever I can, but these folks really tanked my belief in unproven studios.

I reeeaaally wanted this to be good. I wanted to give all parties involved a chance to make something good again, but they released a partially unfinished game and now they're trying to make more money off of in-game currency...

Bethesda, I'm done.

Get your head on straight and look to CD Projekt, because as far as I'm concerned they're one of the only bastions of true consumer-friendly games left and my money is going to them.

It was interesting at first but becomes entirely too much of a grind unless you want to spend way too much money on in-game purchases.
