I grew up playing UT, and I have a love of movement, and retro-shooters.
This is Titanfall x Quake in a Cyperpunk world.

I love movement games with a side of shooter, and the more buttons I can press, the better.
This game delivers.

What I like:
  • Movement is really fun and fluid, and it's forgiving enough to let you bounce around levels with ease on the first play-through.
  • Very rarely do I feel "robbed". Mistakes are your own, and are punished fairly.
  • Satisfying precision shooting - headshots and meatshots deal massive damage, and the hitboxes feels fair.
  • Weapon-swapping is HIGHLY rewarded. i.e. you can reset the "cooldown" of bigger weapons by switching away and back to them.
  • Multiple Chapters! I always expect niche games to be small, but the level-variety and length of the game here is staisfying.
  • Shotgun knockback is an extremely fun rocket-jump-esq mechanic.

Overall, my gripes with the game are minor, and don't ruin the experience for me. I think they're just a few things that knock me out of my "flow-state", or don't scratch the entirety of my shooter-enjoyment-itch.

What I don't like:
  • Ammo management. I understand that's kind of part of the "charm" of boomer-shooter types of games, and another way to encourage weapon-swapping, but I found some of the weapons ammo-supply to be too stingy, and ammo-pickups not big enough.
  • AI are a little too quick to react. Bots will instantly snap to you unless they're doing a pre-defined animation, and will instantly path to your new location. The pathing can be abused a bit, but I'd like to be rewarded for out-maneuvering them!
  • Explosions don't feel big enough. Maybe kind of a pro, but i.e. blowing up a mech with grenades doesn't actually seem to damage the enemies around it. Jetpack explosions are very satisfying though.
  • Really easy to get Out of Bounds or skip sections of the level (intentionally or unintentionally). I would find myself looking at ledges or places that I knew I was supposed to get to "eventually", and then just find a way to parkour up to them immediately. (Level geometry is also a bit buggy, which is what allows most of these shenanigans.)
  • Easy to get lost. Related to the last one. And I understand there is a general sentiment of "handholding is bad" in these games, but with the crazy freedom of movement here, it can be hard to figure out what's the intended path, vs what's backtracking, vs what's OOB.

Overall, highly recommend this game. $15 is a great price, and it goes on sale regularly!

100%-able in about 3.5 hours of playtime if you're good at rhythm games, and look up how to get the last few achievements.
Well worth if for the price, as a rhythm game enjoyer myself it's a lot of fun!
I'm still trying to get S rank on a couple maps.

I look forward to mod maps :)

Edit: I took another hour and got S rank on the remaining maps - except for one...

I enjoy the harder difficulties in this game, and aim for top 20s on the leaderboard, so I'll speak from my experience.

If you like bumping up the difficulty in the originals, this pack is for you.
The patterns are novel.
The notes are faster.
Your arms will burn.
I haven't even made it through the 10 minute song (yet).

I will say, most of the new patterns feature a decent amount of "jackhammers" as you might call them in other rhythm games.
That is, you need the ability to hit two or more notes, with one hand, in VERY quick succession.
I'm not the biggest fan of those patterns (because I suck at them...) but the soundtrack is killer, so I'm willing to learn.

Dystopian Cyberpunk vibes.
Retro low-poly art.
Area-shooter style weapon switching.
Crazy momentum-based dashing that can fling you across the map, with full air control - it feels so... *chef's kiss*.
It's got all the nostalgia of games from my childhood, but in 2022.
I'm in love.

If I had to come up with some criticism:
The perfect-tracking enemies, and weird player hit-box make close-quarters feel awful. If you're close to enemies when they fire, you're gonna get hit, no real chance to dodge. The only strat is to circle strafe in one direction.
Also, please make the pick-up hitbox taller (Quake Live style) - I hate gliding over the top of some health, then dying because I didn't pick it up.

This game doesn't hold your hand, and make the adventure feel dangerous.
The edges aren't as polished as something like monster-hunter, but it's a decent open-world experience. Traveling feels risky even with the way you can manipulate AI.
Combat feels like you have to really outplay the AI to get free damage. It can also be super-punishing if you mess up. Be prepared for frustration until you understand it.
Death has very little consequence (and is sometimes beneficial), so don't be afraid to die - if you take risks, you will.
Also, there is no XP. So you can truly strategize when and what you fight - no reason to kill everything in a dungeon other than loot.

Quick Time Event Simulator 2015

Okay story, but not the best combat system. Everything is a quick time event, similar to Assassin's Creed's combat, but more variability in which button to press. Many of your enemy's attack startups look the same, but vary in their parry timing window. This makes it difficult to perfect parry them, but rolling is a semi-reliable option too.
Executions get repetitive quick, but it makes for an interesting challenge to try to get legendary timing. Even if you push the wrong button it still gives the execution to you - I'd like to see failure as an option. Makes the whole game kind of mindless.
Then there is 'focus mode' which is just rediculous. It stuns every enemy around you and gives you a huge attack speed buff. I'm glad this doesn't work on the bosses or the game would get really boring really fast.
Also, I never really figured out what the point of 'execution upgrades' was or what 'burning eagle' mode did. I understand that execution upgrades gives you more execution animations, but it's a silly thing to spend XP on. %80 of them are unlocked from the beginning anyway. I think burning eagle mode is suppose to reward better timing with more damage, but I didn't see any noticible impact.
Other than trying to be perfect for perfect's sake, not a hard game even on the higher difficulties. Try skipping on the health upgrades if you're looking for some punishment.

The story is a good one, but felt rushed toward the end. And there was no real 'final boss' to me. I kept waiting to fight something out of God of War, but no such luck. All questions do get answered, but looking back it's not the most satisfying ending.

Overall, I'd say it's worth it if it's on sale. A solid play through in the end.
