It's... fine?
Pretty underwhelming when compared to the RE2 remake, but not a bad game by any means.
Haven't played the original so I can't say anything about its quality as a remake, but if you liked RE2 and want some more, this is worth checking out (on sale of course)

fun game but the UI designers need to be sent to a supermax prison

New Game +, harder difficulties, and a post-ending dungeon behind behind a DLC paywall when all of that was free in the previous entry (atleast in the english release, apparently in japan it was dlc too which is equally terrible) is shameful and scummy

(edit after beating the big swell: it was really not worth it. the only thing that makes it different to the basegame dungeons are less floors and a different appearance, there are no new bosses, enemies, gear, etc its all reused content. i was expecting a challenge akin to the true final millenium tower but it was much easier than expected even without any farming or max tier equipment. the character cutscenes after completing each sector were cute and charming, but you can find those online)

A genuinely brilliant masterpiece. One of those games that sticks with you long after finishing it.
Wish I knew about the corporate shenanigans that resulted in the creatives behind the game being ousted from the company BEFORE I gave them my money, but too late now.
It would be a REAL SHAME to pirate this game and you SHOULD NOT try to play it for free.

Very tough to recommend. It feels like every time they are close to making progress on improving the game they always stumble before the finish line. the combination of saying they will give the game "significantly reduced investment" going into year 2, devs being moved to other projects like a PUBG collab and the unnamed "project baxter", AND starbreeze laying off 15% of their team paints a bad omen for the future of payday 3. Hopefully the jacket character pack reignited enough interest about the game for it to be improved

edit october 2nd 2025: they REALLY can't stop shooting themselves in the foot. offline mode cancelled, project baxter cancelled, ""upgrading"" to unreal engine 5, greedy payday 2 monthly subscription, even more layoffs.
