I believe that combat and exploration are the main pillars of an RPG and this game sucks at both.
"Exploration" only consists of going through roads, loading screen and annoying companion banter only to discover a very small map.
The need for pre-buffing is so bad in this game that there's even a mod for auto-buffing! Devs are also bad at balancing encounter design and can only cope by adding time limits or just inflating the enemy AC to absurd degrees.

The story is nothing original. It's almost a ripoff of ASOIAF. Grey Wardens are basically NightWatch, the order who once defeated the Not-Orcs but is neglected and not taken seriously due to Not-Orcs not appearing in a long time. If you play as a Noble Human you basically play as Jon Snow.
RTwP combat is only slightly better than Infinity Engine but it's still inferior due to lack of enemy variety. There are basically only 4-5 types of enemies and this game is full of combat making it quite a slog. I don't even want to talk about dungeon design.
No wonder after a decade romance is the only thing people talk about regarding this game.

A lot of people hate this version because a lot of features were removed. But you have to face the truth, this game is 85% fighting battles and that's where Taishi has improved. You can't just curbstomp everyone past a certain stage in the game because every battle matters. I was once conquering a smaller clan with ease and they caught me off-guard in uncomfortable terrains and nearly turned things around. This couldn't happen at all in SoI, making playing as small clans actually viable to a degree.

Morrowind but with an even worse combat and UI system and the game is nothing but combat. Surviving as a male in an all-male prison is something you don't often see in RPGs, for good reasons.

It's a solid turn-based game but a terrible X-COM game. Fraxis streamlined it too much and the focus on combat balance harmed other aspects. It's a travesty that a game made in 1993 had deeper combat mechanics than a modern one. You had night missions in UFO, where aliens could see more than you so there was a need to use flares or molotovs. Action-Point system allowed for more flexibility when it came to running and shooting. Different modes of firing each weapon(Should I snap a shot at the alien then runaway? Or try to empty the entire clip?) whereas in Enemy Unknown there's only one way to use your weapons. There's also too much limitations on inventory. Soldiers having to choose between having a medkit or grenade is just dumb. One of the tactics in UFO was to use an array of smoke grenades to make way for your offense. In Enemy Unknown only a specific class can throw smoke grenades and he can only do it in limited times. I don't even want to talk about the "Fate of the world rests in your hand but you can only send 4 ppl at a time"...
Yeah it's more challenging, the older games had this problem of getting too easy in late-game, but EU with trench warfare being the only way to win has sucked the fun out of the game.
