If you suffer from ADHD, you will love this game. If you don't, this game will inflict you with ADHD. You'll need to do 2-3 separate tasks at all times with constant visual and audio stimulation. Atomicrops isn't a typical farming game like Stardew Valley. It's more like a twin stick shooter roguelike with a farming mechanic. One 15 minute playthrough spans 4 seasons each with 3 days and 1 boss, and you start over if you die. There is also a lot of exploration and things to unlock, which you'll need to find the time to do while watering your crops and defending them from monsters, or else you won't be strong enough for next season. The only way to recover hearts is by growing "Heart Beat" seeds, which can be hard to find sometimes, so you really feel each heart that you lose.

Overall, this game is very stimulating, fast paced, challenging, and not what you may expect.

I'll start by saying something nice: I like the visual design. The juxtaposition of cute cartoon animals and edgy violence is what originally drew me in. That being said, Cult of The Lamb feels shallow.

Cult of The Lamb has two game modes, so I'll review them separately.

Combat & Dungeons

Fighting and dodging little balls of pain while collecting random weapons in a dungeon full of square rooms just makes me wish I was playing Binding of Isaac instead, so I think it's fair to compare it to Cult of The Lamb. The random weapons don't synergize in interesting ways like the tears in Binding of Isaac. Unlike Binding of Isaac, this game has character progression with permanent skills and upgrades, which inverts the difficulty curve to make the game easier over time. Even without the upgrades, the highest difficulty in this game is a lot easier than Binding of Isaac.

Village Management & Tech Trees

Managing your village doesn't have much to do with the combat. The two modes could have been two different games that you alt+tab between. Villager requests and buildings in your village require materials that can be found in the dungeon, but you'll always have more than enough if you spend a lot of time in the dungeons, so everything might as well be free. There are two tech trees to fill by managing a successful cult: one upgrades the village, and the other upgrades the Lamb. I found it too easy to complete all branches of both tech trees before I was even half way through the main story. Since the main story can only be progressed by fighting the bosses at the end of each dungeon, your reward for managing your village too effectively is to have a pointless village before the game is even close to over.

Since this game is still actively updated, I hope the village management gets more depth and more meaningful interaction with the combat half of the game. Right now, it just makes me wish I was playing Binding of Isaac with one hand and Animal Crossing with the other.

Protip: Leave eye holes so you can see through your gun.

This is an arena shooter a lot like the modern Doom reboots, but with a custom gun gimmick. You start each mission with 2-5 gun pieces that you can rotate and snap together any way you want. Some parts synergize in ways that totally change the feel of the game, like using gatling guns with boosted recoil to thrust into the air.

This game embodies everything I anticipate from the Armored Core series. The arena battles and AC customization are just as memorable as before, enhanced by the new style of boss battles inspired by Sekiro, which I find to be a refreshing addition. Several of my favorite weapons from Armored Core 2 are available in the shop.

I play on Linux using Proton, and it operates flawlessly.

I haven't had sweaty palms from playing a game in a long time. After a friend invited me to a match, I had the game installed in seconds and jumped right in.

I was looking for some kind of tycoon game to relax with the day this was released. It's fun if you're looking for something more goal oriented than a walking sim but not competetive or stressful. There's plenty of side-quests and mini-games. Skills such as farming, fishing, and mining can be leveled up by doing those tasks, with a choice of 2 perks every 5 levels. Depending on which perk is used, you may focus your farm more on quantity than quality, animals vs plants, or raw vs aged or processed goods. There's a few different farms to choose from before starting that are specialized for things like farming or fishing. Pelican Town can be improved by either paying a lot of money to the new supermarket or collecting items for the forest spirits. Given all the choices, there's plenty of replay value.

Roleplay
This game allows for great emergent narratives. It doesn't impose any kind of lore and all aliens and empires are either created by the player or randomized. It offers a lot of customization options for both the look and playstyle of your empire. It's more of a sandbox for roleplaying than a real game. There's very little challenge, and the game can continue after one of the victory goals has been met.

I made one empire that has two races, one I roleplay as parasites with the "decadent" perk that makes them unhappy without slaves. I made another with two races that is an egalitarian haven where all are free citizens. My favorite that I made starts with robots and is roleplayed as an automated bureaucracy where a small group of programmers maintain the automated government.

Gameplay
A giant negative for this game is the lackluster combat system. The only viable strategy is to send your entire fleet after the enemy's entire fleet, and the one with the most DPS wins. There's no incentive to use better weapons or bigger ships, since the most basic starter ships are more cost effective for high DPS. Ground combat is also boring, since the more expensive ground units can also be spammed to death by the cheapest ones.

It's way too easy to have more minerals, food, and money than you could ever need. You'll quickly outpace all the AI and run out of things to build or buy. There's really no challenge to this game, so it's not a game as much as it is a sandbox.

Exploration
I'm always finding new interesting things in each new galaxy I generate. Some of them are very subtle, like the pre-space civilization that ended up nuking itself to extinction when I wasn't paying attention. Hunting giant space monsters with my fleet is fun. Some planets may have a secret subterranean civilization that reveals itself in the form of a new race on that planet. Other planets have kaiju that will either join your army as a ground unit or rebel against you.

The exploration pairs really well with the roleplaying aspects. I had a playthrough where I discovered kaiju that joined my army. I researched "powered exoskeletons" and "xeno mounts" along with my kaiju soldiers, so it was fun to imagine a giant monster wearing power armor and riding a giant alien mount. In another playthrough, a slave race from an authoritarian empire spread as war refugees across the galaxy and became leaders of 3 different empires at a time.

Summary
Definitely get this if you want a sandbox for roleplaying, exploring, and emergent narratives. If you like games like Dwarf Fortress, you may like this. I wouldn't call this a game though, since there's no real goal or challenge. The combat and economy needs a lot of work before I could recommend this as a real game. It's still worth getting for what it is; just know what you're paying for!

I paid for early access as soon as a working demo was released years ago. Over the years, they added and promised a lot of exciting features. I saw a lot of potential in this game, and I still do. This game is very feature and content rich, and the art is great quality. Unfortunately, a lot of the features are pretty disappointing, and a lot of things that were promised were never added or just not executed very well. Some survival features can be completely negated, such as heat, cold, and breathable air, all that's left is the hunger mechanic which is not balanced well in my opinion. Despite all of this, I would still recommend the game, because it's very fun with friends.

However, this game is very poorly optomized. I believe it's the pathfinding of enemies and NPCs that cause severe FPS drops in crowded areas of the game. Weather also drops FPS, making me think it's the way ponds appear during rain. Nothing can be done about this. I'm confident that the graphics are not causing the low FPS, a beefy GPU won't help. It requires good CPU, which is not typical for most games. It runs poorly on my desktop with a 4.2MHz processor, and it causes my laptop to overheat and shut down. This makes the game completely unplayable in some cases.

Update: It works great in Steam Proton on Ubuntu.

I got this game in a cereal box years ago. It's one of my all time favorites, but I lost the disk during a move. I was happy to see it again at Humble Bundle. Unfortunately, this game doesn't work on my computer, Windows 8.1. It says "Unable to initialize graphics system." I'll change my review if I can get it working later, but until then, I can't really recommend a copy of this great game that doesn't start.

The first thing I noticed was that the combat system is very similar to modern Batman games or Shadow Of Mordor. However, it seems more simplified, and timing attacks is not as important. What sets it apart from the other "Batman" games is that combos can be customized with different combinations of punches and kicks. I think there should have been more variety in the combo options, since they only come in 4 types: extra damage, reduce cooldown, health regen, and moves that multiply the effect of the previous move. Just when I think the game is about to get a little challenging, it throws me a bone and makes it too easy again. The player will sometimes be granted special abilities that can do anything from stunning all enemies, to controlling one robotic enemy at a time.

This game always boxes the player into an arena before starting a fight. Each boss fight ends with a quick-time-event where the correct sequence of buttons to press is always the same. I played on medium mode, and the combat was so easy for me, that I almost always ended each arena segment with full health. Sometimes, I'd take fall damage just before an arena, and end the arena with more health than I started it with.

Another similar feature to Batman games is the way climbing works in this game. It lends itself well to big, open, vertical world maps. Unfortunately, this game is extremely linear, and it's always very obvious which ledge to jump to next. There are a few secret items scattered around, but they're always just around a corner, and never extremely out-of-the-way. The game even notifies the player that there's a hidden item nearby by showing a picture of what the area around it looks like. There are a few obstacles, but they're pretty easy to avoid. Just check my achievements, there's one for being spotted by a drone 5 times, and I still don't have it after completing the entire game.

Most of the developer's focus was clearly put into the writing, setting, character design, and music. The premise of the story seems heavily inspired by Total Recall and other sci-fi films that focus on memory. The aesthetics look like they're somewhat inspired by Ghost In The Shell with some homages to it scattered around. My own hardware has some problems, and games tend to have graphical artifacts for me. It was difficult to tell in this game what was intentional artifacts and what was my bad GPU. The plot is very contrived and full of cliches, but I won't spoil it here. The idle boss chatter during fights can be a little dumb and repetitive.

Where this game really shines is the sound design and soundtrack. Again, my hardware is bad, so it was difficult to tell when the audio was glitching on purpose and when my hardware was acting up again. It has lots of glitchy aspects to it, like repeating and looping errors. The music definitely saved the game for me. The music made me want to get to the next easy arena fight just to listen.

I got this game from the Capcom Humble Bundle, and if you can get this game for practically free like I did, it's definitely worth playing for the "experience". Otherwise, there's no challenge or replay value, so I can't recommend paying the full price.
