Just stellar. Hollow Knight was already a 10/10 experience and this makes it look like an alpha build. This is peak 2D gaming. The combat is incredibly satisfying. It's very difficult but never unfair.

I never played any Neptunia games prior to this, but I picked this up cos looked like a fun little shmup. The lo-res pixel art is nice. The character-switching mechanic is novel and interesting. You begin with one character and every level after the first adds another character with a different shot to your roster than you can cycle between with the left and right bumpers. Cycling between characters for optimum shooting efficiency is key to mastering the levels, and every time you add a new character you must re-learn the optimal cycling direction.

Elec Head is an excellent little pixel puzzle platformer. I'm not the hugest fan of puzzle platformers because I often feel the platformer aspect of them becomes, in a sense, irrelevant to the puzzle solving. Elec Head never feels like it lets down the platformer medium in its mission. The character controls great and the animation is fluid and polished.

The basic mechanics are simple. Your character's head conducts electricity either through the body and down to the floor below you, or by being thrown and conducting from a distance. The electric charge interacts with the environment in a few ways, mostly by causing platforms to move and activating hazards. It's pretty impressive how many different puzzles developer Nama Takahashi manages to create out of so few elements. Not once during the journey did I feel like a particular puzzle was redundant or not worth my time.

The game takes place across one large, mostly linear, map. There's one power-up in the game, the afore-mentioned head-throwing ability, and it does allow for access to new parts of the map, but this is not a metroidvania. In addition, there are also 20 hidden microchips (Or maybe they're keycards? The game refreshingly contains almost zero text outside of the title screen and credits.) These chips allow access to the true ending, although it's almost identical to the standard ending and neither is anything grand, this is okay though, since Elec Head, like any good game, is more about the journey than the destination. There are also larger chips that are even harder to find that unlock new color palettes. If you've played similar limited-palette indy games like Downwell, which the creator has said he was inspired by, these types of bonus palette will be familiar. Personally, I quite enjoy different vibes different color palettes give off.

The music is great too. Elec Head has a nice retro style platformer OST to jam out to.

I only wish the game were longer and had some tougher, optional, sections to conquer. It took me about three hours to finish the game with most of the hidden chips, another 45 minutes to find the last remaining ones, and I still have yet to find all the hidden color palettes. There're only a small number of puzzles that I found exceptionally challenging, and those were the ones that focused more on reflexes than puzzle solving. A custom level designer and a way for players to share their own maps would be another great way to extend the game's playtime. As it stands, it's a short game that doesn't strike me as having a whole lot of replay value, although I think it would be a great game for speedrunners to spend time honing skills at.

Despite the short length, this is a definite recommend from me, and probably the best puzzle platformer I've experienced.

Rivals of Aether is a platform fighter in the vein of the Smash Brothers series. This is a genre I have never been very keen on, so it's a bit of a twist that I'm writing a positive review of it here. I originally picked it up upon release, knowing that it wasn't a genre I normally messed with, based on the excellent pixel art/animation and catchy-as-hell retro style OST the trailer promised. I was not let down in these two regards, though the game itself couldn't hold my interest for very long.

I've recently come back into checking out the game thanks to the workshop and its plethora of user-created characters. It's honestly staggering how much talent is flowing out of the Aether fanbase. There are currently over 2,000 player-created characters, and while they don't all reach the standard of the official roster, a surprisingly large percentage of them do, or at least get so close that the difference is negligable. It really feels like there's an endless supply of quality of player-creations to explore.

I still don't mess much around with the game proper, but I sometimes enjoy watching four computer-controlled workshop characters go at it (decent, but the AI doesn't always make for the most engaging battles,) and I've begun checking out the Abyss mode, that pits you against waves of weaker enemies for something that is less "platform fighter" and a bit more "platformer", which is more to my liking.

There are definitely things that could get me to play this more. Abyss Mode is a good start, but I'd love a full-on side-scrolling platformer mode. I admire the devs a lot for their willingness to open up the game to workshop characters like they have, though it still feels like workshop characters are treated as sort-of 2nd class characters. There's no way to give them their own proper slots on the character select screen, and instead they're tucked away in a separate list. One result of this is that you can select a random character from the official roster, you can select a random character from your personal downloaded workshop roster, but the game always keeps them as two separate rosters, and as far as I can see, there's no way to select a random character from a singular pool that combines both rosters. In general I feel that the character select screen is sluggish and a bit of a pain to navigate, especially when I wanna set up a four-way computer match. Smash has a similar problem so this seems to be an issue with the genre. Having played a lot of traditional fighting games, I'm surprised by how this offshoot genre of platform fighters seems to have actually regressed in this specific aspect.

At the end of the day, even though this is not my genre of game, there's enough here that at the very least, holds my attention and keeps me looking forward to how it has continued to evolve.

This is probably the best free game you'll find on Steam. This is not "free to play" in the modern sense of the term, which is a free game that earns back money through in-game purchases. Super Crate Box is a simple, free game that will keep you entertained for hours. I've only logged in 2.3 hours through Steam, but that's because I previously put in the majority of my time playing the identical version I downloaded directly from Vlambeer's site.

Super Crate Box is like an old school, single screen arcade game (the orignal Mario Brothers is the closest match,) but with shooting combat in-line with later games like Contra 3 or Gunstar Heroes, and with endless gameplay and a few random elements (placement of the mandatory power-ups, and the deployment of the enemies) of an endless runner.

I would've been happy to spend 5-10 USD on this gem. I would pay more if there existed an enhanced version with more levels and enemies. Definitely worth your time if you like fast paced, highly replayable shooters.

Some people have called Hollow Knight the best metroidvania ever made. I'm one of those people. The combat and especially the boss fights are expertly crafted. The world is huge, and is almost certainly the largest you'll find in the genre (Symphony of the Night may be bigger when you include the upside-down castle, but Hollow Knight's stupidly large map does not include any sort of re-used locations.) Graphically, the game is just beautiful, with a trendsetting artstyle that includes some of the nicest parallax scrolling you've ever seen. The vast underground kingdom of Hallownest, a land that has seen better days, but has yet to fall into complete ruin, pulled me in more than perhaps any other 2D gaming world ever has.

If you're a fan of 2D platforming, and especially metroidvanias, this game is a must-have. Hollow Knight doesn't really break new ground for the genre, but it takes what's already there and applies a new level of craftsmanship to it that's never been seen before.

Vanguard Princess is a classic dojin anime fighter with some of the best hand drawn, hi-res pixel art and animation you'll ever find (Even more impressive when you realize it was all done by a single person.) If you're into fighters, fan service, or just good pixel art, this is definitely worth the price of admission, but there are several caveats that need to be noted.

The game lacks a "true" fullscreen option. Putting it in fullscreen stretches the aspect ratio and also blurs the pixel art (and not decently either.) Equally grating is that roughly two years ago the game stopped recognizing ALL of my gamepads. I'm not sure if this is the case for everybody, but from reading the Steam discussions, this has happened to quite a few of us, the publisher posted some workarounds, but none of them have worked for me. Fortunately, I WAS able to get my gamepad working through the free (and tiny) 3rd party program Joy2key.

In playing Vanguard Princess in 2021 it feels like the game itself is on life support. I have dreams that one day it can be upgraded to a new engine, but until then I'm honestly just glad to be able to play it at all.

If you're a big fan of Pac-Man and are still looking for a new way to play it and have already put in hours playing Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+, this is a good enough purchase. It's a slower game which makes it a good play when you're trying to occupy your eyes while listening to an audiobook or podcast.

It's an endless runner, and not a very deep one, as far as the course layout goes. You'll see the same maze segments repeated over and over. There are different power-ups you can choose to to aid you, but ultimately I don't find they make that much of a difference to your overall strategy and experience. If you're not a huge fan of Pac-Man-style games in general I would pass on this. If you're a moderate fan, I'd definitely consider Champion Edition DX+ or even just the original over this. If you're a fan of endless runners (and I myself am not,) I imagine there are better, more fast-paced, options out there,
