We are blessed to have this appear out of nowhere. Originally a japanese-only, criminally underrated revival of Goemon, now localized and on Steam.

This game feels like if the 3D Goemon games stayed in development and were then influenced by more modern platformers like Mario Odyssey and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Every level has its own graphical distinction and gameplay elements, but you will spend a lot of time breaking open, collecting, and brawling things. Bakeru maintains the heart and wacky fun of its Konami-abandoned inspiration. There is a lot of national pride within this game, as it fully embraces the Japan setting.

Playing this on my steam deck, I get what feels to be a smooth 60 fps even with high graphics. By comparison, I played the switch version that was 30 fps and flakey. A no-brainer for anyone wanting a showcase steam deck game. Or if you miss the dying art of 3D platformers. Sleeper hit I suspect.

One of the most immersive gaming experiences I've ever had.
The game could be considered a true 'half-life 3' in some ways, including how much you can play with the environment, the deep environmental storytelling, and isolated feeling atmosphere. However, this game is really not a shooter in the half-life or bioshock sense. You will have limited ammo, and I found myself using the wrench more in combat situations. Instead, it's about finding the right mix of stealth/alternate routes, turret defense, environment manipulation, weapons/melee combat, and what we'll call "other" powers.

Every area of the game is designed with all of this in mind, and as a result, there isn't a situation you can't get out of, even when it will feel like it at first, when stronger enemies start showing up and ammo/health is still in low supply. It's also very aesthetically pleasing to look at, as the game world is designed with all kinds of cool art deco styles mixed with traditional sci-fi scenery.

The game also nails its storytelling. The first hour is very linear but sets up a plot that will have you feeling hooked. Then the story dialogue introduces you to people who might be unreliable or untrustworthy, and we see lots of hints at dark things going on from the audio logs. And with this, your decisions start having many real-world consequences that you will see within a story time. As a result, I felt compelled to actually finish the main story line as well as most of the side-quests.

But, this discussion of the storytelling also goes into my one main problem with the game, which is the pacing feeling off. As I mentioned, the game starts off very linear, but then opens up. When it does this, things can drag a bit, as you have to decide which missions to do and run the associated back-tracking. Then the last hours of the game feels rushed to finish the story, and doesn't quite give you the same level of freedom you had before. This is made worse by the fact that enemies re-spawn everywhere, regardless of how often you've been through that area already.

If you are not looking for another traditional FPS, and don’t mind doing some work to learn some different systems, you will find a lot to enjoy here. It’s a shame that more people didn’t buy this when it first came out (myself included), but I owe that to the weird choice of IP, when this game has nothing to do with the older ‘Prey’. But that leads us to today, where you can get this awesome game at a great deal.

I had a ton of fun with this re-make collection. I'm a big fan of old school 3d platformers, but as a Sega/Nintendo kid, I didn't grow up playing Crash. I think the panned 'wrath of cortex' that came after these games was the only Crash game I've previously played. So going into this was not a nostalgia trip, but rather an opportunity to catch up and play some games in one of my favorite, now neglected genres.

This game has a reputation for being really hard, I think that is way overblown. I am not an amazing gamer, and I beat all three of these games without ruining my life to do it. I didn't 100% them, and I certainly died and cursed many times, but even the hardest levels (like native fortress and slippery climb) I eventually powered through. The difficulty softens on every level since you begin to memorize the timings or jump strategies that you keep dying on, and before you know it, you reach the end. Some reviews say the jumping mechanism is off but I call BS. When you die in this game, it is your fault, and you will figure it out if you persevere.

As others have stated, the second and third games are way easier than Crash 1. The story is so inconsequential that you are not missing anything by starting with either of those instead if you get frustrated with Crash 1. This may contribute to why I liked the first game the best though, because the other two did not feel as rewarding for completing.

Other good things:
- The animations. There are so many unique death animations that you almost can't be mad when you die because of how ridiculous they are. The enemies also felt like part of a living cartoon in great part due to animation quality.
- Graphical quality. Inspired art direction bringing these old designs to modern standards. Great lighting and textures that set the mood of each level well. And the experience is truly best on PC since it is the only platform that has fluid 60 fps and full graphical features.
- Lots to do if you are a completionist in terms of getting all of the gems and completing the two bonus DLC levels that are hard as hell.

Bad things:
- I wasn't a huge fan of Crash 3. About half of the levels were really fun and with a cool aesthetic (the egyptian, dino, and future themed levels). But otherwise, I felt it was too easy and the vehicle/flying levels felt phoned in. This is probably a game that felt awesome when it came out, but playing it immediately after Crash 2 in 2019, it felt inferior.
- Extremely easy bosses. Nitrus Brio in Crash 1 was the only boss that took more than a couple of tries for me to kill. This was so odd after playing some levels that were n sane.
- No subtitles. I'm not deaf and the story isn't exactly important, but I have no idea why this is missing.

Overall though, if you like jumping on lots of moving platforms, running from large polar bears, and swearing like a thug because Crash shouldn't immediately die in water, this game comes recommended.

As a huge sonic fan (including most of the 3D games), I wanted this game to be enjoyable. It isn't. The controls and the camera are downright broken. The few levels that I completed played like a chinese knock-off version of Mario Galaxy with Sonic modded in. It feels like a generic game from a Z-tier developer that bought rights to the Sonic name, but made no other attempt to capture anything else about the world of Sonic. I am pretty shocked that this actually came from Sonic Team. If you want a good modern 3D sonic experience, try generations and wait for the sequel. I uninstalled this game after 15 minutes.

Not really worth anyone's time.

I don't know who the audience for this game is. This won't appeal to fans of horror games or walking-simulators. It hints at the cold, lonely atmosphere of a game like amnesia, but there is really no horror to be found here aside from a slightly creepy cave. The story, acted out in a book-like fashion, is pretentious and over-written without substance. It doesn't spook me or invoke any other emotions other than annoyance. It is also extremely short, so you only have about 1-2 hours of playtime.

However, as even a walking-simulator it failed. For one, the walking speed seems way too slow, and artificially so. There is not so much detail and story content that if they sped it up, you would miss anything. And secondly, there are not really any secrets or special things to find to reward explorers. You might get an extra little bit of the lame story, but that is it.

All in all, I would pass. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a much better example of this type of game.

Rocket League is one of the most surprisingly good games I've played, and at $20 full-price, also one of the best values.

I am not usually into sports or sports games of any kind. I also only casually like to play racing games. So the formula of mixing the two seemed unappealing. But I was in the mood for something different, with so many gams in my collection being FPS, RPGS, or FPS/RPG hybrids. I saw a few reddit memes and I had a few friends playing, so I said 'what the hell' and bought it.

And it was an excellent decision. The first thing I noticed when I fired it up and got into a match is how tight the controls are. Sloppy controls and detection could ruin a game like this. In the training levels, you learn that the basics of the game are really easy to learn and difficult to master. Next, I jumped right into some real games, and I've been having a blast ever since. It is a great game to play in short spurts, since each match is only 5:00.

It is also a great game to come back to after a while because the creators have been awesome at giving new content, both DLC wise and for free. This is a great model on how a developer should support their game.

The two areas I would like to see improvement are in the ball physics, which can be a bit wonky at times, and the match-making system. Match-making doesn't seem perfectly even, and smurfs easily creep in. Also, I do wish they could lock players out of server regions they don't belong to, because these create high-ping matches that are really difficult.

Overall though, I can't recommend the game enough.

This game is best with:
1. An xbox controller (or whatever you have)
2. Friends, so you can talk strategy, trash, and enjoy the mayhem together. The community is not that great, so I wouldn't recommend it to a lone wolf who wants to do multi-player.
3. An open-mind about what kind of games you like. I never thought I would have gotten into a game that is essentially a variant of soccer, but I did.

An incredible game, but only for certain kinds of RPG fans

I loved this game. But I wouldn't recommend it if you are only into modern games with technically amazing graphics and fast-paced, streamlined gameplay. Instead, I would skip right to the Witcher 3. I also wouldn't recommend it if you don't have 40-80 hours or more to dedicate to playing, because it is not a short game even if you were to ignore most of the side-quests.

But if you have a fond history with games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, or Morrowind... get this game now!

Even though it came out in 2007, it plays more like an RPG from an older era. Clunky best describes most aspects of the gameplay. The combat is based on timed clicks, which feels like something that you would have done in the 90s. The inventory and menu screens are a confusing mess at times. You have to look at your map often because there is no quest arrow constantly holding your hand. At times the combat feels super repetitive and there are parts of the game where you are grinding and nothing more. Also, the game is demanding and does not hold your hand with its difficulty level. You will die a lot.

The main reason to play this game is the story content. Despite living in lifeless models (many of which are reused with barely any changes), almost every character is memorable. The Witcher's lore is deep, aided by a fantastic book series, and this only adds to it. The voice acting can be cheesy in parts, but in a charming way. You will feel a kinship with your allies and real hate for your foes in this game. Very rarely did I find any dialogue to be boring.

The story is also told through some fantastic quests. The main quest has tons of mystery and surprising turns that keep you engaged. With this are some side-quests that are absolutely hilariously entertaining. Let's just say that Geralt gets into the kind of mischief that other fantasy heroes would stay far away from. He isn't one to turn down a drink in a tavern. Anyway, while there are plenty of fetch quests too, even those tend to have some interesting story element to them.

Also, the graphics and music are awesome. While the graphics show aged textures and models, they still have a certain appeal. Each area is dripping with its own distinct atmosphere. From caves and swamps to bustling towns and creepy temples, you really get a sense for the geography of Vizima and it will feel like a place you actually visited. The music has an epic celtic folk feel. I can't think of a single moment where the music playing wasn't a perfect fit for my surroundings.

In summary, if you want an easier pick-up-and-play experience and cheap entertainment, this game won't give you that. But if you are an ambitious fantasy gamer who is tolerant of flaws, and motivated to have a great old-school RPG experience, this is a great game for you. It also sets the stage for two other fantastic games which improved on the original in almost every way.
