another year, another negative review.
bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs!
the voyager can not currently be recovered from an emergency brake application; theyre supposedly rolling a fix out but how on earth did that get through QA? does the QA team even exist at this point?
floating scenery, floating track in the tunnels out of hoboken, funky lighting (this lighting engine is unchanged from tsw3/tsw4)
the BR 101 getting stuck with doors open on AI services
conductor mode STILL sucks, its like theyve moved on and forgotten about it. old routes like rapid transit feel like abandonware, completely out of date, but there is no transparency on when routes were released, they essentially wipe the dlc reviews clean, so awful routes like arosa line dont look half as bad as they truly are.

the routes are nice sure, definitely a strong release roster, however you are essentially paying to be a beta tester.
not to mention, the leipzig dresden route already had the dresden to riesa section in the game since TSW2, they haven't updated the scenery, still looks dated. anyone else remember when they gave out south eastern high speed extended for free to anyone who owned south eastern high speed? nothing of the sort here. disappointed

the starter pack is great on paper, but why is it not a permanent offer? if you forget to get in on it, tough luck buddy, try again next year!

you have to redownload all your content, can take up to a day for some people if internet is slow or you have a lot of DLC

do NOT buy this at retail price, wait for a significant discount. do not encourage this scummy EA-style practice of re-releasing the same game every year.

poorly optimised, need a beast of a pc to run this. the vram usage is insanely high, especially around spinball whizzer.

but its free and also this project is absolutely awesome so theres absolutely no reason to not check it out and the accuracy is incredible. great work

i last checked this project out around the nemesis demos so amazing to see the progress

It's a good foundation

The lack of waterslide physics is tragic... RCT3 did this 20 years ago. Flat bottomed raft slides too? Waterslides run on predefined rails. This is a huge step back.

The UI is messy currently, feels like it was designed with consoles in mind over players. The original UI in PC1 was far better. Why change it for PC?

Graphics, coaster builder, scaling, customisation of rides. All amazing features, this games core concept is awesome. It just needs more time in the oven, and with frontier's track record and what they have already published, I have full faith they will make fixes (to the UI, the waterslides may not be fixable but I am desperately hoping they are)

Do i recommend the game in its current state? Maybe... depends how much you will play it and how willing you are to work with what is currently a UI that is trying to be too user friendly and as a result is incredibly unfriendly to the user due to how many menus inside menus there are, and moving things that frankly did not need moving.

Treat it more like a public beta

A hotfix blog post has been made. They will be adding slide physics. for now my waterslide comment is relevant, but not for long and i couldnt be happier

I bought TSW2020 back in 2018. This is the first TSW game i will NOT be buying at retail price. Why?

1. WCML is not in a ready state at all. Ill touch back on this, but it needed more time in the oven.
2. MISSING LAUNCH FEATURES. DTG claimed that with the launch, all future locos will have SUSPENSION UPGRADES, but the 350 doesn't even have it??? the 72ts doesn't have it, and the 377/2 didnt have it during pre-order playtime (it does now), plus this was supposed to be a tsw4 feature and it released for a handful of trains, and not american ones. ALSO, the new track shadows they claim to have added didn't work on junctions AND on several straights in various spots. I can remember the new american route stream having them missing within a mile or 2 of los angeles.
3. THEY PUT THE PENDOLINO BEHIND A £50+ PAYWALL. ON THE WEST COAST MAINLINE. If I was buying the deluxe version, i want all features they claim to be adding to be correctly added. Plus the running sounds of the pendolino are just so off I can't in my right mind pay that much money. PLEASE STOP RELEASING ANNUAL UPGRADES!

I appreciate the free release, and at initial announcement I was really excited, but for 3 years in a row, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING AT LAUNCH PRICE! IT IS NOT WORTH IT! wait for a sale, or just enjoy your current routes. Do not encourage them to announce that features are added, but then not actually add them. That's false advertising, and is very shady. I will not be buying any tsw5 routes at anything less than a 40-50% discount.

i really want to like this game... i do

few things stopping me from liking it:
one: the lack of any meaningful additions from tsw3->tsw4. i simply dont see the reason for this to be a new game? i understand the 3 routes for the price of (a bit more than) 1 is a great deal, and the routes are decent IMO. the deluxe edition br 193 and flying scotsman are by far my favourite. i would've much preferred a rush hour launch like they did with TSW2 in 2021.
releasing a new game simply paywalls what should be free updates, let alone the new DLC, which are also still overpriced.

two: the performance. the graphical changes from tsw1->4 are really not that noticeable, minus the lighting engine change. but to cause the requirements to be so much higher than tsw1 and 2? something just doesnt seem right.

oh and also the driving assist is stupid for the scotsman, tells you to bring cutoff back when the safeties are blowing... just give us an option to turn them off please

if there was a neutral option for steam reviews, this would be neutral. i like the content, but dont see the need for ANOTHER installment in tsw series, especially so soon after tsw3. it feels like the same game, probably because it is. due to DTG potentially turning this into a habit, im going to review it negatively to hopefully show them that this behaviour is unacceptable.

oh and not to mention the buggy mess the game is on release with a load of services being deadlocked, trains not behaving as they should, silent AWS alarms and 1000Hz PZB signs not showing up when acknowledged... yeah, this needed more time to cook in the oven...

everything about this game just feels... off

i love the new roles and whole balance concept, but i dont like the new ui, plus the fact it closes during cutscenes is really annoying. the actual game dynamic is fun tho

no players outside of coven all any, but worth it for the extra roles IMO

I'll repeat what I put for TSW2 on this route.

ONLY buy it if you're convinced you want to drive alpine narrow gauge.

The distant scenery is a whole other level of bad, the route hasn't been touched by the dev (rivet games) for a long time.
That said, the close up scenery is very good, and it's clear rivet put a lot of care and time into making it look good.
The modelling of the rolling stock is fantastic, as always with rivet, however the sounds are absolutely god awful. Search a video of this train in game online, it sounds like a shopping trolley.

Something rivet prided themselves with in making this route was making the cars in the streets of Chur stop for the train as it passed through. THIS NO LONGER OCCURS. you have cars just driving through your train willy nilly. Don't expect updates, is what I'm trying to say about this. It's in a pretty sorry state, tbh.

Having said that, I had fun on the route and drove it a lot, so I will thumbs up. Hesitantly
