I think this is the most technically impressive game to have ever actually made it to any kind of public release. Unfortunately, the game design is quite a lot less impressive. I loved the game in closed alpha, but the whole economy and gameplay loop were completely changed on public EA release, to be much worse. I really hope the devs can get it back to a good state, but it's looking somewhat grim.

EDIT: Not that anyone's going to see this, but I want to complain about people claiming this game was a money grab. I would be willing to bet money that this game was a net loss, and probably a large one.
The game is bad, but it's not because the devs were malicious.

It's no Terraria, but it's good. The combat is very basic and the game is not very long. However the unique mechanics (mainly the liquid system) make for interesting gameplay regardless. Personally I think full price is reasonable, but I can see how one might disagree. It's definitely worth getting if it's on sale, though.

It's nice, though rather short for the price. Far from the hardest puzzle game I've ever played, but it's surprisingly challenging for a game where you can only walk, pick up cubes, and press buttons.

Some have claimed that every generated dungeon feels like it was hand-made. I wouldn't quite go that far. But it's most definitely a MASSIVE step in the right direction. I am not aware of any other game whose level generation even comes close to this one's. If you like procedurally-generated roguelikes/lites/etc. but are tired of seeing only superficial differences between runs, just go ahead and buy it. There might be a point at which the generation starts feeling samey, but at ~50 hours I certainly haven't reached it yet. (You will start seeing the same "lore" between runs after a while, and obviously game mechanics are reused, but the actual structure of the levels and even the overall dungeon does legitimately feel different every time.)

The gameplay is very solid, as everyone else says, but we both know the level generation is the game's big selling point. And yes, it absolutely is at least as good as you're expecting.


Occasionally there's a level generation bug, but I've never encountered one that blocked progression. And yes, there is sometimes slowdown after you play for quite a while, but you can always save the run and relaunch the game to fix it.

I really hope there's a sequel. Or at least more games in the universe. (I mean even more than the companion games.)
Too much cool worldbuilding in this and the companion games to throw it away after one game. (Well, three.) (Well, two and a half.) Especially considering the whole uncertain status of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ elder god pit and possible end of the world thing.

I can't really speak for how much the game has improved, since I wasn't able to play it at launch thanks to its abysmal optimization at the time. I can say that it is a good game now. There are a couple caveats, though.
First, don't buy it at full price. The devs are still updating it, so maybe it will be worth $60 someday, but not right now. Luckily, it goes on sale for 50% off a few times a year. At $30, it's probably worth it.
Second, this game is effectively still in Early Access. It still receives major updates overhauling substantial parts of the game, and it's still packed full of the kind of annoying-but-tolerable bugs characteristic of games in beta.
If you still want it knowing the above, go for it.

Usually I like this kind of game, and usually I don't write reviews for games I don't like. But this game is unusually disappointing.
Maybe I'd enjoy it if it were properly playable, but it isn't. Huge input lag even when the framerate is high and smooth. Walking controls are really slippery, too. It doesn't look very good and yet manages to run poorly anyway. If you stray from the expected path, the game may not understand and may just throw you into a death loop. (Try jumping on the radio obelisk. You'll see.)
I only managed to get through a few areas. The terrible input lag was just too distracting to tolerate in this kind of game, where imersion is important.

The controls are responsive, the gameplay is tons of fun, the visuals are stunning, and the audio is... interesting. It's ambient and beautiful and very well-done, but (for the most part) not exactly music, in the traditional sense. Personally, I like it, but it's probably not for everyone.
This is a great game. I'm not great at descriptions, but you can read any of the other reviews for that. I'd definitely recommend picking it up anytime it's significantly discounted, and if you're into this kind of game, it's worth it at full price.


I do have a few gripes, though. They are, in no particular order:

It's occasionally hard to tell what is an actual platform that can be dashed onto and what is just background. This isn't a huge deal because falling off the world only deals slight damage, but it can be a bit annoying.

There aren't enough save points in dungeons. The fights are hard, but I'd be fine with even harder ones if it saved before each arena rather than after every third arena or so. Having to grind through two pretty easy fights each time you die in a hard one gets pretty old after a while. This is my biggest complaint, but it's still only moderately annoying at worst, so don't let it bother you too much if you're thinking about getting the game.

The world model is kind of weird compared to other games with a similar perspective, in that the hitboxes of large obstacles are based on what you see rather than what makes sense. In other words, if a building obscures an area, you generally can't walk into that area, even if there wouldn't actually be a wall there. It's... hard to explain. You'll figure out what I mean if you play it. This isn't really an issue at all except in the sliding crushy block parts, in which this can make you think you can hide in a place you actually can't.

...OK, those gripes took up most of this post, really, which isn't fair. It really is a great game. Those are really only minor complaints, but I feel they needed to be said.

Also, it's hard, but it's generally a fun hard, and not really as hard as a lot of people seem to be making it out to be. I'm generally pretty bad at video games, too, so anyone should be fine as long as they're OK with dying a lot.
