up there with the witness and portal as one of my favorite puzzle games in recent memory.

the graphics are gorgeous, the lighting in particular adds excellent atmosphere to often sparse locales. i was surprised at how painting-esque some of the later chapters are, subverting the "looks like portal 1" route at the beginning.

the story is interesting at best, mostly just serviceable. i didn't find it compelling, but given its secondary nature, it's a welcome addition.

other than the puzzle design itself, what i enjoyed most about Q.U.B.E. was the difficulty. while there were absolutely puzzles that took me a while (two of which i had to look up), the game does an excellent job of balancing difficulty with forward momentum. puzzling enough to be rewarding, but not Witness style "holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ i don't even know what i'm looking at?" levels of confusion. this balancing act is paramount to games of this genre, as they are extremely hard to pick back up if you take some time away.

on the outside, this game looks slightly simplistic. i was initially put off that cubes could only be placed in certain spots and that there were only 3 types, but neither of those initial worries lasted long. the game has excellent internal logic and its ability to stump you given the (at first) limited toolset is one of its greatest strengths.

minimal in theory, robust in execution - Q.U.B.E. 2 is an excellent, subtle game that is easy to recommend both in quality and in price.

Admittedly, this isn't for me.

I really wish I liked this game. I have tried many times to get into JRPGs throughout my life. The few that click, I've loved -
mainly a handful of FF games (III, IV, XII, XIV and the Tactics offshoots). I adored Chrono Trigger. DQ IX surprised the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. More hybrid games like Monster Hunter I've found excellent, and the Souls series (technically a JRPG, (though much different mechanically and aesthetically) before it blew the ♥♥♥♥ up and became westernized by virtue of popularity)) and have willfully looked past a lot of the genre's tropes that don't interest me.

I suppose the more anime-leaning games are what I'm referring to, as the title of JRPG is (thankfully) broadening and developers seem to be taking risks. I had heard good things of the Tales games and never buy a game with the intention of disliking it because I'm not a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy person.

Saying I was disappointed implies that I had high expectations, so that isn't the case, but the thing I can say for sure this did not spark the slightest interest.

This is not even necessarily a knock against the game. It clearly has an audience. It has a sort of pedigree and reverence evident in not just high percentage of positive reviews but the glowing praise within them.

I feel that commenting on the mechanics and storytelling/writing is like someone walking into another country and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all over because it isn't what they're accustomed to. I didn't find it offensively bad as a game, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it not a game for me.

I guess that's what it comes down to. The main reason I'm writing this review and trying my best to be self-aware of my ignorance of the series is to warn others like me that may hope this could be a gateway game for this style of JRPG. Maybe for someone out there that will be the case, but this is a $50 game in a sea of cheap and excellent games.

I don't recommend this to like-minded individuals. However, it seems to mean a lot to a lot of people, and that itself has value. Buyer beware, I guess.

one of the most mature and impactful stories of any game i've played. fantastic voice acting, and writing that handles SOMA's nuanced, delicate, and realistic themes without bias and with grace. i'm glad this game exists, and im glad that frictional is establishing themselves as very competent devs.

if the horror elements are keeping you from buying this - get it anyway. i'm not a fan of straight up horror of really any variety. yet the questions that SOMA raises combined with compelling characters hooked me to the point where fear was just a necessary evil. and the existential fear created is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ impressive.
