tl;dr: If you think 3 short legacy dungeons and 3 really good bosses is worth $40, buy it. I regret continuing to play beyond Messmer, which was unfortunately the vast majority of my playtime.


Before I begin, as a disclaimer, I did not do all of the side content because I wanted to be done with the DLC and move on to other games, so I might be missing some really great bosses that I never bothered to seek out, and I generally refrain from using summons or spirit ashes, so if you do then you may have a better experience than I did since you won't end up spending as long on the bad parts.

Half of the bosses (5.5 out of 11 remembrance bosses) are low-quality from a gameplay standpoint and are unimaginative, boring, or phase 2 of the final boss. As I mentioned, I generally refrain from using summons or spirit ashes, but the quality of those bosses is so low that I did end up using spirit ashes on the 5.5 bad bosses just so that I didn't have to keep playing the game. To give credit where it's due, there are a couple of extremely good bosses, and in my opinion Rellana is the best boss we've ever seen out of From. Despite that, the overall quality of the bosses is extremely low, and for me it was not worth the $40 and more importantly was not worth the 32 hours that I put into it.

I don't really agree with the complaints about the difficulty of the bosses except for the second phase of the final boss, but I can understand where people are coming from. My three favorite bosses were definitely some of the most challenging bosses I've ever experienced, but I was enjoying them a lot so the difficulty was welcome. To anybody who found or might find the DLC to be too hard: make sure that you are collecting the upgrade items for yourself and your spirit ashes; they make a very big difference. If you do choose to use spirit ashes, your Mimic Tear can almost solo most of the bad bosses.

The open world is labyrinthine and difficult to navigate; getting to new areas is frequently a very annoying and time-consuming game of hide-and-seek. While the dungeons in these games have always been filler, they've at least been inoffensive and just kind of there. Sadly, that does not apply to the specimen storeroom which went far out of its own way to be obnoxious; it is easily the worst level since Lost Izalith. The mini-bosses in the final legacy dungeon were neat, and they made it stand out as a pretty good area; I probably enjoyed fighting through that dungeon more than any area in a From game before, but it was not very enjoyable to explore.
