Small management game with an interesting twist.
Once you have a gameplan you quickly become too big to fail.

Picked it up again after a couple of updates and like the new cards they introduced!

As someone who loves a good mystery game and very much enjoys the mechanics that come with a time-loop, I can't recommend this game enough. While the whole game can be finished around the ten hour mark (more if you mess around or hunt for achievements without a detailed guide) it is definitely worth its full price.

Created by a core team of three people, The Forgotten City is a remake of a Skyrim mod, created around 2015 by Nick Pearce. He gave up his career as a lawyer to bring us a time-loop mystery game set in an ancient underground roman city.

At the core of the game is a clever dialog system that drives the narrative. The game does not hold your hand nor spoon-feed you solutions, while interlinking leads between statements will never leave you without a sense of direction where to go next.

The city is a gorgeous location to explore, and the characters range from endearing to infuriating. While there are some combat elements, the focus is set on exploration and investigation. Time is moving in this city and so are the characters: Instead of waiting around for interactions, NPCs live in the city, walking around and having conversations that give some additional information. If you need to have a conversation with a specific character, you may need to traverse the city to find them.

The time loop mechanic is engineered in a way to minimize repetition on the player's part, so there is always something new. The game features four different endings, some more rewarding than others. The more you as a player engage with the characters, the more options open up.

Really like the atmosphere and the building!

First time I stumbled across this game was back in 2019, on a book fair of all places. They had the demo available so I started in the middle of a level where someone else left off. The artwork and music instantly cought my attention and I played through the demo after I got home.
Now that it's finally here I played through the game in one sitting and took my time to take in the atmosphere and just let it all sink in.

The main point of this game is the plot and the way the atmosphere as a whole makes you feel. The emotional weight of the story takes precedence over action-packed gameplay.
If you are aiming for challenging gameplay instead of a "story based walking simulator", then I suggest to look somewhere else, since you probably won't like this game too much.

However, I thouroughly recommend this game to anyone who ever felt like no matter what they did, it was not enough. This game lives off its emotional core and is best engaged with as a story to live, not necessarily a game to beat.

Looking back now, especially with the release of the so-called "appreciation package" I decided to change my review. At the point I wrote my first review I hadn't completed the story and was just about to leave the forest. So, just at the half-way point and at the exact point the game falls apart.

The launch was bumpy, to say the least and server disconnects are still a thing. Always online was not a good choice. never is, but PCF (People Can Flay, the developers) really took it to a new level.

I played the devastator, the tank class of the game and did fairly good right until we hit the endgame. The endgame here consists of nothing but time trials. Not the kind of content a tank is inherently good at. There does exist a legendary shotgun that would have scaled damage according to my armor value, but slowly grinding for this one shotgun in an undivided lootpool of over 120 legendary weapons? Thanks, but no thanks.

Along with major glitches and the overall instability of the game I quit. I get that there are more detailed reviews out there and that the game has a lot more problems than what I touched upon, but I don't feel like listing it all. It's just way too much. Look it up if you feel like it, it's not hard to find.


Starting steam today I got the notice, that the long promised "appreciation package" is finally here. Oh boi do I feel appreciated.

We got 3 things in this package:
- ONE legendary weapon that should be one the players haven't gotten before. Yeah, about that.. It's my third Thunderbolt. It's a god roll alright, but still.. You had one job!
- An emote aptly named "FRUSTRATION" that looks like it's been animated by a (pardon the pun) very frustrated intern.
- Titanium. A resource you can easily max out once you hit the endgame time trials by trading resources.

If that's the way PCF show their appreciation I need no longer wonder why their "masterpiece" falls short of just about every expectation.

So, I played the demo for some hours and was fairly happy with the game.
My system ist at the lowest of the low ends for this game, sporting a GTX750 (mind you, not even the recommended 750 TI), however, the demo ran on my PC which was enough for me to buy the whole game.

I started the game right at release and spent the first hour troubleshooting, luckily I found a fix in the steam discussions for my UE crash. I am aware that not everyone is as lucky and finds a fix, and PCF needs to put in some work, but I hope that a lot of those people with rigs far better than mine can get to enjoy this game. I see the beautiful scenery and my heart hurts a bit, for my poor GPU can't show me all of this games glory, but it manages.

So far my pal and me had a blast. The missions are longer than in the demo and the encounters are more challenging, especially when playing together due to scaling. I can't really say much aboout the story, but so far the humor of the sidequests is amazing.
The loot is outdated really fast during that first runthrough, so don't get into that micromanagement too much. My micromanagement is driving my buddy insane, understandably so, for I spend way too much time perfecting a loadout that's outdated once the missions over. Keep your stuff updated, switch around your must have mods and get back into the fight.

This game is a piece of art with the music and illustations building a cyber inspred world in an art decor style. Basically Cyberpunk 1930.

The gameplay is very different from what I was used to from Bastion and even more so from Hades. It utilizes a turn() mechanic, but with the right combinations you can completely negate the need for this.
The beginning is definitely hard, with the game punishing you for failure by taking away your "skills" if you take too much damage. Once the ball gets rolling, however, there is no stopping you.
If you want a challenge (or simply more experience), the game offers you "limiters", thus increasing the ferocity of your enemies, giving them shields etc.

Sometimes just kicking back in the sandbox, listening to the tunes you unlock in the trials after a chellenging fight is the best thing you can do.
While it certainly does have it's flaws, I definitely recommend checking it out.

High replayability. I needed some time to get into the game, but even then dying was already rewarding. Once you are done with the "final boss" is when the game really starts. The difficulty is hard, but it ramps up slowly, giving you the possibility to "git gud" with time, avoiding frustation.

Definite recommendation if you like rougelites, dying (a lot) and strategic combat with a ton of variation in your gear.
