Okay, for better or for worse, there are a few comparison's this game is just going to have to live with, and Baldur's Gate 3 is one of them. I can't even remember at this point if you were able to circle the camera around, but you can't right now. It makes it painfully hard to fight battles. I wasn't able to get very far into it however because in the first battle after the opening section, it hung on an opponents turn with no way to advance it.

At this early stage, it's really hard to say how it's going to turn out, but the combat is not as quick as it is in BG3, and the characters, for lack of another term, are just boring right now. I think enough has been said about the character creation, and they're all right.

I'll keep coming back to it every few updates to see if it gets better, but the game has a ways to go.

I've just finished the game for the second time - and I've only played the "good" side so far. Once as a custom character, once as an origin character (Wyll). Both play through s were very different in the second and third act. The first act was pretty much identical - except one time I skipped the mountain pass - it turns out you can do both the underdark and mountain pass. Do it! It opens a completely different set of quests and storylines; I won't give away more here.

Great game with lots of replay value. There were a few minor bugs which it looks like Larian is in the midst of fixing, but no crashing bugs and nothing that really ruins the gameplay. I did have to load from a save when I got stuck in an action that would never complete, but that was it and it only happened once in almost 400 hours.

This will be a game I come back to over the years and I saw that Larian is backtracking and they now want to make some DLC. Can't wait!

Updated Review
-----------------------
Okay, I've played the game through almost twice (more below) and this is a bit more in-depth.

First, I really love this game. It is well done and I'll try to cover some details without giving the story away. The story is in-depth and while fairly straightforward (help the patriarch or don't), there are numerous choices along the way - some have an effect on the story, some miraculously don't which I don't understand.

The next item is that the game is too short. I felt like WL2 was double the size because of the Arizona and then California locations. I kept hoping there was some secret path to Cheyenne Mountain Complex or more about NORAD. No such luck even though it is teased. It's long enough, with a lot of replay value, but I wanted it to be longer. I hope there are DLC's for this game.

There are bugs. Lots of bugs. Most of them are just annoyances. Some require you to restart from a save though. Fortunately none of them really require you to lose any time going back far - just a different path in the conversation or something minor. I think the devs will work this out as a lot of these are being reported on the forums.

Would I wait for a few patches? No. It's a great game. Just get it.

Original Review
----------------------
A quick review based on where I'm at in the game (and I'm quite sure I'm not even a third of the way through). Please note that I was a fig supporter.

I've had only one crash in 45 hours and it was a minor deal as autosave and quicksaves work great.

There are a few annoyances which I'll detail in the forums so the dev's can look at and one or two minimal bugs but that's it.

Gameplay - wow. I'm going to have to play this five or six times. There are so many decision trees which effect a lot of different things from what I can tell right now. A lot of hard choices. I like the richness of the characters you run into.

The vehicle is just cool. Love upgrading the guns on it.

World encounters are HARD.

Money is much more scarce than in WL2.

I can't wait to see where the story goes but I'm loving it so far. If you like top down isometric games then you'll love this game.

I haven't played an ARPG game in years - in fact I think Diablo 2 was the last one I played right when it came out. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It has solid mechanics, no real bugs that I found (no crashes or anything like that). It is hard when you get to the later stages and even doing the "ultimate" builds (yes, I have a level 100 Ritualist), it will be difficult. Good - things shouldn't be too easy.

The story is minimalistic to say the least but that's okay - I wasn't playing it for the story. It's a good escape that you can play for 30 minutes at a time. Well worth it.

The basic thing is that the game just isn't that much fun. The story is sort of ridiculous (you can use the force already but you have to re-learn how to use the force, huh?). But really it's the combat that's just not fun. You can't effectively do combat with a keyboard (hello, the dodge key by default is the Z key which is your left pinky) - you have to remap the whole keyboard for it to make any sense. But more than that the balance is just off. The "boss" fights are next to ridiculous, especially the first second sister you come to and it doesn't matter what difficulty you are playing on.

I've seen posts where people said it was easy on Jedi Master or Grandmaster. I just don't believe it or they're just so much better at these types of games. Whatever. I loved the tomb raider games and while hard, they were fair. This game just isn't (and it's a straight rip-off of the tomb raider games in terms of play style).

Unlike Kotor, lightsaber upgrades don't give you any bonuses. There are no armor bonuses. You can't use a blaster for long distance kills. Almost all of the loot crates are cosmetic upgrades. Why bother searching for them if you get something that doesn't matter at all?

Finally, the meditation spots for saving are terrible. Many of them aren't before boss fights so you can't save and try different things. This was the mechanic used for Bards Tale IV originally and it was a terrible mechanic that made no sense whatsoever.

All-in-all, just not a very fun game. Unfortunately you can't get a refund if you play more than 2 hours which is poor on Steam's part. I just can't recommend it.

I'll start off by saying that I've only played for a few hours so far, but I've come to some definite conclusions:
- As others have said, it is frustratingly difficult to figure out what is going on half the time
- I feel as though the combat mechanics are clumsy to say the least. For instance, I can only cast two spells in a single combat. I can't figure out why and I can't seem to figure out how to increase that number
- It says that spell books let you cast spells that you may not know but it seems like you have to have a spellbook equipped to cast any spells
- You can't write spells into a spellbook. This is very unlike the "classic" games like Baldur's gate where once you found a spell you could, you know, copy it down and cast it whenever. This is just dumb.
- Movement is clumsy - I don't want to wait to have to walk everywhere, but I can run some places and I can't figure out what the difference is
- The beginning of the game is very slow and it's taken me around 4 sessions to get anywhere
- In some cases there's no ability to see the difficulty of the fight you're about to walk into so I hope you save often

I've seen all the great reviews which is what prompted me to buy this game, but I don't get it. I think the mechanics aren't even as good as BG/BG2/NWN2/etc. I just finished playing Divinity II and this is my new standard for isometric gaming. And this game isn't even close. I can't, at this time recommend it.

[Updated]
I am just about finished with my second play-through with slightly different characters and skill trees, but I did it on the Explorer mode this time instead of classic. It is a lot more fun on Explorer and I don't have to worry about the fights too much. However, after playing classic the fights seemed too easy on Explorer (in general - there were one or two "hard" battles but it was much easier after having played on Classic before). I think there needs to be a difficulty slider because Classic is too hard, Explorer too easy. There needs to be an in-between setting.

I found a lot more things this time around and found a few more issues, but they were all minor. All-in-all my original review stands and this is now the standard by which I'll judge all isometric games. It would be awesome if Wasteland 3 used the Divinity engine :)

[Original]
I've just finished my first play through of DOS II. I have never played the original and I never played Classic - just the Definitive Edition. Hopefully this is helpful for people.

I come from the D&D world, loved all of the baldur's gate and neverwinter games and that genre in general. Stacked against those games DOS II is just amazingly well done. The mechanics of the game are great, the stability is great, the story is very well done and all of the sub-plots and story are woven together nicely. The breadth of spells is well done and I love the fact that you can respec your characters at any time without penalty - but also that you can pick the path and direction of that skill growth such that you can be a little bit of a fighter or be all fighter but have just enough magic points to get some really cool spell capabilities. The fights are fun and engaging and there is a lot to explore.

That isn't to say that everything is rosy. There are some things that are just a bit ridiculous and I want to point them out so everyone is aware of a few items:
- Some of the boss battles are, in a word, ridiculous. As in ridiculously hard and not at all fun. While I like games that are challenging, and I appreciate dying and then trying different tactics, it shouldn't take me an hour and 20 different trys to figure out how to fight a battle. Some forums noted, "well, you just haven't spec'd your guys right that's why you can't win". At a sufficiently high enough level, you shouldn't have to spec down a specifically narrow path in order to beat bosses. That's just a bad play balance design.
- Some of the "hidden" items are just a bit too complex. I had to spec one character with a very high Wit just to find some basic items. I appreciate the hidden aspect of various items but it's too much.
- The ending was sad. They put a bunch of thought into the story for the entire game, and there are three or four possible endings, the story sort of just stops without any type of real conclusion. It's like the game was building up to a grand finish and then sort of just fizzled out.
- There are a lot of areas where you need a specific item at a specific time and if you don't have it, that's it, you can't complete a quest. While that's probably fine in real life, being able to try something again would be nice without having to back two hours in the game.

After all that, I will be playing this again. There's great replayability and I haven't tried the game with a few different characters.

I just finished my first playthrough of Bard's Tale IV. As a disclaimer, I am a backer and played the original Bard's Tale (in fact, I think it was the first real graphical user interface after Wizardry that I played). I love InXile games and loved Wasteland 2 (and I'm a backer for 3). So that tells you how I feel about InXile. Now, about this game. There are good points and bad points and I'll be playing through at least one more time as I know I missed a bunch of things.

The Good
It seems that first person solo games are few and far between these days in the RPG space. I was really looking forward to this game and for the most part it delivered.
- The characters are fun and creative and the dialog is mostly great.
- The music is awesome and I enjoyed listening outside of the game itself.
- The graphics look great for a fantasy world.
- It is a great and fun waste of time and as I use gaming as an escape I enjoyed it immensely.
- I like the food system for healing and it was well done.
- I loved the forest puzzle and the constellations - that is an amazingly well done area.

The Bad
Unfortunately, with every game there are problems and there were quite a few design decisions that I just didn't get at all. So this may be a bit of rant, but hopefully InXile is reading these.
- The skill tree is mostly useless. At a certain point I had (no spoilers) a set approach and it worked against everything. I didn't use 80% of the skills at all
- There is very little documentation or guidance, even in the walkthrough. The elvish weapons were confusing and not well documented, as were the elven shrines and even some puzzles. In addition, if you're solving puzzles for the weapons, let me choose what type of effect I want - don't lock me into something that's useless (like the stun effect - why am I going to use the weapon with a non-leathal ability? I want to kill something with it).
- The vendors still drive me nuts. At one point I needed 3 apples - just 3 of them - and no vendor I found that sold food had any apples. Really?
- Weapons and armor: There is a lack of weapons and armor and the no-stats on boots just personally drives me nuts. But really, for mages for example, there's no point in getting the Archmage armor - most of it is equal to the armor of the level below it and besides I only found around five pieces of archmage armor in the whole game
[Update] I knew I forgot something - tell me how the damage stats are generated in detail. I had two almost identical characters with the same abilities and one did 6 physical and the other did 15 physical while another one was wildly different for mental. One had a strength that was 10 points higher than the other but did less damage. In these games I live and die by stats - help me understand - this shouldn't be magic.
- Save games: This is a personal pet peeve of mine - let me save the game whenever I feel like it. That encourages trying different things. I hated going into an area and the first thing I thought was, where is the save totem because something bad is going to happen. It didn't make me more cautious, it just got me annoyed
- The codewheel as a printed device was not well through out. I hacked together a javascript version of the code wheel in 10 minutes - just put one up on a website so people who aren't programmers can use something easily. It took one Javascript library from Github and 10 lines of HTML
- The tracking system needs to actually work. I had absolutely no idea where to go on multiple quests because there was no tracking
- Not necessarily a bad thing, but there weren't enough code wheel offerings so I couldn't get enough elven shards to try out all of the different weapons
- I never found or figured out how to make Haggis. Not sure how to complete at least one code wheel offering. Like I said, I missed things
- The puzzles are redundant after a while

I will be playing this again.

Most of the bugs that InXile is fixing I never ran into at all (although I did run into two random ones which allowed me, somehow, outside of the bounds of the game, then I couldn't get back in or go anywhere. I also ran into another bug where I was attacking up a set of stairs and the enemies were offset to the left by 4 grid spaces which means I couldn't see them and I had to reload). If these items get adjusted (noticed that I didn't say fixed) the game will get a lot better.

I forgot just how great this game was for the time and I'm still enjoying this time around. The addition of the auto-mapping capability is really nice. I enjoyed the graph paper when I was younger but not now :)

The game is still enjoyable. If you've never played it before, it's a piece of gaming history and if you have, you'll enjoy the break from the more complex games for a step back in time.

I'm not sure what all of the hype is about. I bought this game and last light on sale based almost entirely on the reviews. However, I played it for a little over an hour and it is a) very, very linear and b) just kind of boring. I'm sure the story is great when you get into it but it doesn't grab me and pull me in. I like more open world experiences like Fallout 3/4 (granted the story in 3 was lame but the world experience was interesting).
