Persona 5 is such a unique and stylish offering, but also bloated to the point of detriment.

The story is the driving force here, and I have mixed feelings. I like the ideas presented, but I don't think they congeal quite enough to fully stick the landing. The game length draws it out so long, and the most interesting part was the Royal content all the way at the end. The world is excellent, and the characters are solid - though not as memorable as some from previous games in the series. It troubles me that a guide is pretty much required to max out all the character interactions in one playthrough, especially with the game being too long to easily replay.

Something I have no notes on: the presentation. This whole game is unbelievably snappy and stylish and on theme down to every little detail. The music is incredible and fits the mood perfectly, though, like the characters, not as memorable as previous titles.

The gameplay social and combat systems feed into each other in a way that gels the two 'halves' nicely. The combat is snappy thanks to the presentation, and it feels good to find enemy weaknesses to exploit, but the padded nature of the game causes it to feel like a chore at times. The unique dungeons, while not revolutionary, are a great step up from the previous games. The Persona fusing/collecting aspect is interesting at first, but also becomes a chore because there are way too many that all become pretty similar just to have coverage of all elements plus the overpowered abilities.

This sounds pretty critical, but most of my complaints stem from the game's length. This is a good game that needed an editor.

A refreshing change for the Legend of Heroes series that has me looking forward to when they hopefully perfect this new formula. Updated systems all around. The new real time combat addition is nice to breeze through easy fights, or get an advantage when turn based is activated, but it isn't quite fleshed out enough. The new quartz and arts equipment systems are a bit convoluted at first glance, but the value add does click eventually. The story is also convoluted, as is typical with Trails games, but it does stick the landing. It goes for a more mature tone, which is nice. The new cast of characters is endearing. The visuals are a much needed step up from previous titles, and the music has some bangers for sure. Overall, a nice new direction for the series, and I hope they continue to improve and modernize without flopping on what the series does best.

Oh, boy. Lots of buts here. This is not the Dragon Age game I wanted it to be, but the zeitgeist about it is overblown. The visuals are amazing quality, but too far gone from the style of the previous games. Musically, there were moments, but mostly forgettable. The gameplay is actually pretty fun, but loses any novelty after some time because of a lack of enemy variety and stripped down RPG elements. There is a surprising variety of character builds to play around with, which is nice, but once a build is settled on it starts to get dull because of a lack of depth. The story has a decent basis because it's built on such a strong foundation of work, but the writing is a big issue. The tone and quality do not match the previous games, nor the world itself. The vanilla main character is unnaturally positive, and the companion characters are weirdly forgettable. There are some big choices to be made here and there, but like the gameplay RPG elements, the story choice and consequence elements have been pared down too. The plot is mission-based, which causes it to feel disjointed at times and messes with the pacing. Even so, the beginning and ending missions are fun rides. Overall, this is a decent action game with RPG elements, but considering the history of the Dragon Age series, I came away a bit disappointed.

A beautifully intriguing sci fi narrative game that's held up by strong direction, thoughtful music, and quality voice acting. The plot was interesting, but felt a bit too disjointed and esoteric at times to fully connect with me. Travelling through 'layers' of time was a nice gameplay feature to keep this from being just a visual novel. Definitely one of the better narrative-focused games out there, and I feel like for games like this your mileage may vary for how much they affect you.

This is an interesting iteration of Atlus' game formula set in a new fantasy world. The party/class/archetype system is a refreshing change to the monster capture/battle system of the persona games. The visuals are unique and stylized as one would expect from this developer, but a bit too busy for my taste. The music is excellent and fits the setting, but doesn't capture me nearly as much as the Persona series has. The characters stand out as usual, and it's nice to see them branch out from a modern school setting. The fantasy world they created here is a highlight. The story itself is quality, with a good concept and a few twists and turns to keep it interesting (and also explains the milquetoast protagonist), but didn't quite stick the landing or delve deep enough into the themes to truly tackle any complicated issues that could've really made it shine. My biggest complaints: It did start to drag about 2/3 of the way through the game for me. Some of the gameplay systems start to show cracks in difficult moments. I felt like I had to exploit certain aspects, and spend too long brainstorming and changing around character setups in order to satisfy cheesy strategies. Changing up archetypes and equipment became a chore on par with worrying about personas and fusions in the Persona games. Also, the calendar system is getting old (I don't like time pressure), but at least this time it's pretty forgiving. I like the Atlus formula well enough, but I feel like it too often gets in its own way at the detriment of player enjoyment. Fortunately, none of these problems drag the experience down too far, and I would recommend this game to any turn-based JRPG fan who wants to get lost in a cool fantasy world.

An interesting trip to the past. As a huge FF7 fan, I've always been cautiously curious about this one, so that will be my main comparison/reference point. Mixed feelings overall. They definitely took some risks with this - especially with the gameplay systems. They overcomplicated everything in a bad way. Drawing magic is annoying, all the player power derives from 'junctioning' (equipping) 'guardian forces' (summons), and difficulty scales as you level. If the remaster didn't include built in cheats and a speed increase, I probably would've given up. On the flipside, these graphics seem pretty sick for the time, and a step up from the previous title. I was also impressed with the handling of various scenes blending and transitioning between FMV and regular gameplay. The music, while not as memorable for me as FF7, was still excellent. The haunting sorceress' theme stuck out to me the most. The story was convoluted and not presented in the best way, but got pretty wild by the end with some timey wimey stuff that I didn't actually hate. The characters were less memorable for me, but it's hard to compete with FF7 in that regard. A mixed bag, but I'm glad I finally took the time to experience this piece of history from a genre I love.

As someone who would usually complain about open world bloat and watered down focus, this game just hits in certain ways. Those are issues for sure, but parts of this game balance the whole experience out in a positive light. The setting is great, various gameplay systems (mercenaries, cultist targets, armor sets to collect) do what they can to keep the journey somewhat fresh throughout, and fun characters bring levity in a time of grimdark renaissance. The story meanders too long (as a product of the whole game design), but at moments it can really tug at heart strings. Combat is skillful and weighty, making the moment to moment gameplay pretty intense on the right difficulty settings. The light RPG elements even make for some build experimentation. Overall, too much of a good thing that never becomes great.

A cleaning simulator with some thematically dark flavor. The production values aren't great, but the cleaning is satisfying. It's cool to have a more interesting frame around the basic gameplay loop with the murder intrigue, skill tree, and level design. Buy this if you're into this genre.

A straightforward action game that's very evocative of the time it was made. The laser focused action with little frill is somewhat refreshing in light of today's tendency to overcomplicate systems unnecessarily. Unfortunately, it's a bit TOO basic for my tastes today, and ends up feeling slightly shallow and repetitive, even with the short runtime. That said, a few things this really nails are: the feel, the style, the atmosphere. The player really feels like a Space Marine in the Warhammer 40k universe. Smashing all kinds of freaks with brute strength and firepower is incredibly satisfying, and is definitely the selling point.

Definitely my favorite Ys game so far (playing them in order). Ys 8 takes the basic template and elevates it so nicely with a pillow of gameplay systems. The base building is just the right amount of depth this series needed to really drag players in. On top of that, very nice quality of life features like a super convenient save system, fast travel, good mapping, and completion tracking. Beneath all of this is an admittedly basic combat system that flows very well. The music is top notch as always, and the story, while nothing mind blowing, is surprisingly well done. While all I've done is sing praises here, there is still something intangible holding it back from true 5 star greatness.
