I’d been holding off on buying and playing this game because I thought it was super scary. Turns out it’s not (at least not in the big-scary-monster-jumpscares-you-every-second kind of way) and I should’ve played it much sooner. The horror is purely psychological and some scenes will stay with me for a long time.

“Do you know why I used to sing all the time? It helped to drown out the sounds.”
1000xRESIST deals with some very heavy topics – generational trauma, resisting authoritarianism, parental relations, loss and forgiveness, complacency in the face of oppression and many, many others. And as for the historical context the game is inspired by Hong Kong protests (both in 2014 and 2019, I believe).

The gameplay mostly consists of running around and talking to people and is definitely not a high point of this game. The main hub, where you spend a lot of time is also very difficult to navigate. Voice acting is mostly pretty good and music is excellent.

Narrative and writing are definitely the game’s greatest strength and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking for a deep, though-provoking experience that will make you feel all kinds of emotions. I can only assume that immigrants or children of immigrants would connect with the story even more.

Overall I really enjoyed my time with 1000xRESIST despite its very basic gameplay. It didn’t overstay its welcome and I won’t soon forget it.
