No Man's Sky has come a long way since it's, admittedly, rocky launch.

Changes to the UI, inventory management, and general gameplay have evolved to make this a great game for players who enjoy exploring those strange new worlds (and even now we're still finding new solar systems and worlds to explore!), or just want to set up somewhere and carve out their own place in an expanding universe.

Depending on your gaming style, the core "story" can be rather short, but with Expeditions (which often rerun around the end of the year) you can really dig into the overarching storyline as you want.

Overall, fun and relaxing game, the RNG aspects can drag things out a bit (trying to find that "perfect" ship/tool/planet could be the first or the 1001 you find!

Do I recommend this game? Yes - For a specific group of players, but not for the general playerbase at large.

There is a lot to do if you enjoy gathering resources, crafting components, then turning those into larger constructs. There is also a bit for you to do if you simply like flying around and destroying things (outside of the safe zones) But this game "world" is huge, so there is a lot of empty "space", and it conveys a sense of scale accordingly. Funny enough, even with the scale, you don't often feel completely alone, but there will be times where you'll be deep out from a station and look around with only the local stellar area as a backdrop.

Overview:

Starbase is an open world MMO heavily favoring group play and later, will heavily encourage a PVP-accepting style of gameplay when you need more advanced resources. The primary goal currently is gather resources to gain access to higher levels of tech (as well as to build your own supply for crafting). This will allow you to build ships, tools/weapons, and even station parts as you explore deeper into space and gain access to new materials needed for more advanced construction.

The Fine Print:

- PVP
PVP is technically optional as there are "safe areas" around the Origin stations (where all players start) and you can access quite a bit of game content within this area. However, in order to get into more advanced tech, you or someone you play with/hire will need to venture out into the PVP space for the required resources.

- Ship Crafting
[NOTE: There are several known issues associated to the Easy Build method of ship building. The devs have implemented a warning/reminder in-game, so please pay attention to the latest update message when you are in-game.]

Ship Crafting has 2 applied aspects, there is the Easy Builder (module based construction) and Custom. The Easy Builder system requires you to have huge numbers of various resources since you are crafting multiple components into a pre-assembled "block" in a single pass. This module can be used only in an Easy Builder area currently, but allows you to modify/build a ship in a very quick manner. The down side is that all of the blocks will always look like everyone else's block of the same type.

This leads us to the Custom designer.

This system is a nightmare on the first pass, as you have A LOT of control and options, and almost no in-game guidance on how to use it. Think Kerbal Space Program assembly hangar with an advanced design UI of something like Premier or Photoshop.
Spending time in this system is really the only way to get used to (and learn) what everything is, and how best to work within it, and it is a very personal experience. What works well for one person, may be a practice in frustration for someone else, but the control it offers on building cannot be understated, as you will have complete control over every aspect, including the resource piping/wiring, down to the individual rivet. Seriously, you have to choose what beams to weld (simply select the tool > select weld > select the beams), for bolting things on, you have the option to use an auto-bolt feature, but can opt to do this manually as well.

- General Crafting (Tools/Consumables)
General parts crafting uses the same resource pool as ship components, so you will be spending a lot of time (or in-game money) on resources/parts/materials.

- Controls
The game by default, uses a mix of Keyboard/Mouse that is not always intuitive for some players not used to a fully 6DoF style game (and some that are counter intuitive for those who are) Thankfully the devs included the option to rebind almost every control so you can map key sets to what works best for you.
There are a lot of controls/keybinds, so take your time to learn them (or rebind them ASAP) so you don't get fed-up just moving around the start station.
By Default, on foot, WASD are the normal FPS style controls, with the mouse used to look around, but as this is a deep space game, Q quickly becomes your friend. This key is used to orient your character based on the surface your looking at. Basically if you look at something within range and press Q, that surface becomes the "ground"

Overall:

I'm enjoying my time in-game, I think the system has a lot of bugs still, the devs are trying to minimize the issues, and there is a lot of potential in the game for those who enjoy carving out a small niche in a larger universe, but long term, you will probably enjoy the game as part of a larger community of players. I appreciate that the devs have tried to balance the "lone wolf" play style with the "mega corp", but the sheer scale of building larger ships/structures means it is not a reasonable expectation for a solo player to achieve, and that's okay. Because a dedicated player COULD still do it given the time, but it will be a lot of work, just making it that much more rewarding if you do!

Score:
- Early Access (and it often shows)

I've played a few open world survival, and this one builds on some great mechanics while still being different enough to stand on its own.

Pros:
- Fast/easy to learn game play mechanics
It's easy to get started, but the mechanics have a bit of depth to them and you can find a playstyle that works for you.

- RNG world gen
Every time you start a new game, you can have a new world, with completely different map layouts, biome locations, and ruins, making the game very replayable!

- Multiplayer Support (with opt-in PVP)
If you like playing with others, either PVE or PVP, the game has you covered!

- (Pro & Con) Character is persistent across servers/saves
If you like the character you've built, but want to try a new map, simply select the same character and start a new map! Everything in the character's personal inventory, and all skills/knowledge/achievements carry over to the new game. Including Multiplayer servers!

- Food/Survival aspects
You can consume multiple types of food, each with a health/stamina, health regen, and duration. Your character can have up to 3 types of food active at one, and each will increase your total health pool amount, and the rate it regens. At each active food "expires" (i.e. you get hungry) the size of the pool reduces, meaning food has a reason for being there, and having variation in the character diet impacts your gameplay.

- Small memory footprint
Because the dev team opt'd to keep the character textures on the simple side, the game runs well even on older systems

- Tile set, freestyle building with structural integrity, and modifiable terrain
You unlock "tile pieces", such as walls, floors, doors, etc..., by picking up specific materials, and you can place the tiles almost anywhere on the map , but you might need to use a hoe or pickaxe to flatten the area a bit first! Using the mouse scroll wheel (default) you can rotate the pieces to make some very complex builds with time, resources, and practice.

Cons:

- UI can be awkward
The basic gameplay UI is fine for most things, but when you start getting more into the non-basic gameplay (construction/item crafting), the UI can feel cumbersome.
When you pick up multiple item types (such as when looting) the notification area (top left of the screen) spams notices for each item type, and can sometime skip things, so you may need to open your inventory to check.

- Simple hostile AI
Some of the AI creatures will attach each other, some will ignore the player character unless attacked, but they all have very simple attack patterns that can be easily countered with a bit of planning/experience.

- No ability to change food consumption rates
Because the food system doesn't have a "starvation" mechanic, servers also don't have a way to (easily) change the rate food is consumed (food item's duration timer) Not game breaking since the character doesn't starve, but would be nice to have.

Overall:

I've been enjoying the game since launch a couple of days ago, and have played for more than 12+hrs at the time of this writing. So far, the game is fun, has a bit of familiarity because it is recycling some gameplay mechanics (in good ways), but has enough gameplay to keep it interesting for a lot of players I've gamed with.

An interesting entry into the factory/resource style games. Easy to get into, but current design has several forced "gates" slowing down game progression.

Likes:
- Easy to get started (but no tutorial included)
- Smooth (and detailed) animations
- General Concept

Dislikes:
- No tutorial
- Research Tree/System is limited
- Tech Unlock "Gating" (Production volume used for Tech unlocks)

Gameplay:
At start, you have several map types available, each with pro/cons based on environment, resource locations, etc..., and several maps unavailable until specific goals have been completed in-game.

There is an "easy start" for each map that provides several starter buildings, but no tutorial for how to play from the ground up on a new map. There are several buildings that require placement near other buildings of the same type (or specific map locations), so if you use the easy start, your building plans will be impacted later.

The general gameplay is fairly straight forward, mine resources, either crate them or ship them to be refined/crated, move the crates to the shipping point. What isn't as intuitive, some building elements require connecting pipes to "push" materials from one device to another. For example, storage tanks need a pipe to move material into the refinery. This impacts floor plans, and you have to destroy the entire factory building to change the total size/shape of the building.

(Note: You reclaim the value of the building/equipment when selling the device, so the only thing you lose is time and the mined resource(s) in crates/in storage when selling equipment/items.)

Research/Tech Tree requires at least 1 research building, and raw/refined materials to be used as "fuel". You will want to use refined materials (specific materials are needed for multiple tech unlocks) so having the ability to either dedicate a research building to each resource type, or design a system that will allow you to change resource supply lines.

Later tech really just allows you to do things a bit more efficiently, but one major item (Combiner) requires you have specific materials in the research building, but also a monthly/3 month production shipment rate of 6k kg, with other later tech requiring production shipment rates of up to 11k kg.

Each truck hold 6 crates with single resource crates being up to 10kg. So to reach those required production shipment rates, you will need sprawling factories, and to utilize as many of the resource nodes as possible! There is the ability to use "water pipes" to increase resource extraction rate, but this too requires an even larger production shipment rate (9k kg I believe).

Cart tracks (and claw tracks) can only use 1 train group (1 or more cars/claw in the group), and cannot cross the same type of track system, so you will spend most of your time trying to manage and optimize your supply and production lines.

Overall, a generally fun game that uses production rate gates to limit progression speed, and includes some design choices you may or may not like. If you enjoy trying to maximize your production rate efficiency (which you probably do if you're looking at this) you will probably enjoy the game if you can deal with the gating mechanic being used.

An open world, space/scifi, sandbox survival game, that has more community support/mods than probably any other game on Steam.

The development team does not always make design choices that are popular (or in some cases, wanted) by the community, but they continue to try and improve the game with every update. For the length of time this game has been available, it would be easy for Keen Software to simply say "Done" and walkaway, but not only have they continued to fix bugs reported by players, they have continued to refine the game code to support multiplayer more effectively, and make it MUCH more stable. Even if that sometimes takes a while...

Does this mean it's a perfect game? No, not at all.

Is this game worth playing? Maybe, if you like the theme/engine, and have the patience to sort through and pull together mods to make it the game you want to play.

What's the performance like? It changes after almost every update, but I do recommend you use a system with better than the stated minimums. This game will use any and all available system resources it can grab, and the more you have avaialble, the better it will run.

Do I recommend it? Very much so, Yes!

I honestly think Space Engineers is probably one of the best examples of how a team can use Steam as a platform which works together with the community to help make a game more than the sum of its parts.

First the tl;dr version:

Pros:
- Challenging gameplay (everything IS trying to kill you!)
- Interesting take on the survival sandbox game (Overarching goal/story, Spirit animal transformations, flying/rideable mounts)
- PVP/PVE/Co-Op/Solo options on Dedicated or "single session" instances
- Open world, non-arena/battle royal PVP is disincentivized, but still possible (a "con" for hardcore PVP fans)
- choice between custom building from "parts" or use prefabs
- Responsive and passionate dev team
- friendly community

Cons:
- Early Access and everyting that can come with that
- Combat system is functional, but still needs balance
- Early game has a bit of a resource grind to it (this improves as your equipment improves)
- Small dev team
- Early in the public access portion of development

The longer explanation:

This game is still very early in development, and while the team is small, they are friendly, responsive to the community, and they know they still have a lot of work to do. They frequent the community discord, and take constructive feedback/suggestions from the community to make the game "fun" for players, and not just focus on their "vision" of what should be fun in the game.

The game itself continues to grow, but if you're not one of the folks who enjoys Early Access titles (and expect the problems that can come with them) wait until there is a bit more development before deciding on the game. As a game in continuious development, there are a lot of rough spots still, and just like with other Early Access titles, you will run into a bug at some point.

That said:
Do I enjoy the game? Yes!
Do I recommend the game? Yes (with the caveats above)

The dev team described the game as "Dwarf Fortess meets Firefly" and after playing for several hours, I can agree.

General Concept:
Hands-off unit direction (You give them a task, and someone will get to it.. when they're ready!), as you try to achieve more goals, starting from basic survival, to escaping the planet by building a ship, and dealing with random events that can either help you survive, or make your life hell.

Pros:
- Random Gen World
- Small to Large gameplay areas
- Customizable challenge/gameplay settings
- Easy Start/Hard to Master
- A lot of control over the base building aspects of the game
- Every character has it's own personality, wants, needs and desires that you need to account for.

Cons:
- No direct unit control (w/exception for combat)
- Random Gen World doesn't always spawn with needed resources (you are limited by in-game trade rng)
- Every character has it's own personality, wants, needs and desires, and will take care of them in the order they want, not the order that might make the most sense.
- Maps are currently only a single 'layer'
- Single Player

Gameplay Overview:
Dwarf Fortress is a good example of how the game plays, and what you can generally expect. If you're carfeul about how you assign tasks, you can 'force' the AI to do certain things first, but at the of the day, if the character wants to sit and watch the clouds more than cook their food.. they're going to go hungry while enjoying the view!

Release 14 introduces new modes expending on the core game, often increasing the challenge to the game (one scenario has you start with 1 character, instead of the normal 3), but ultimately is just a variation on the core game. 14 also introduces intergrated Workshop support for custom scenarios you build, which allows for much easier sharing of the scanrio with others.

Thoughts:
Overall, a fun game to sit down and kill a bit of free time with, but with enough to do to occupy a larger block of time if you have it to spare. While the maps have various playfield sizes you can choose from, it is still only a single layer map (at least form what I've been able to find - I might just be missing something in the UI/game), but never felt 'small' or confined. The NPC events (even teh bad events) tend to be fun (or at least as much impact you allow them to be, and provide a very real sense of 'Aw crap, what happened this time'.

One thing I'd like to eventually see in RimWorld would be a variation of the random NPC 'story' archive you get in Dwarf Fortress. You don't really see the characters 'story' recorded in the development of your colony/camp, and given the nature of the game, I think that could draw you in to the lives of the characters a bit more while increasing your emotional investment in them.

Recommend?
If you enjoy 'god' games where you do more influencing than directly control gameplay - Yes!

First, the company provided a copy to me for review, yes I checked the little box, but just to be sure everyone knows upfront! :D

So now lets take a look at the game, keep in mind there is a backstory to the game and I'll try to reduce spoilers, but you have been warned ;)

→ Game Overview
Portal-esk in concept, where your character volunteered for a research program related to a new paint technology, and over the course of the story, the situation for your character goes from bad to worse. As you advance in the game, the scenarios become progressively more challengeing, requiring you build on your understanding of the gameplay mechanics and to explore new ways of doing the same things, unlocking the door to the next stage.

→Major Features
-Single Player
-Leaderboards (for speed running)
-VR Support (Oculus Rift™ DK2)

→Gameplay
As a 3d interactive puzzle game, it has moments of high excitement followed by periods of calm where you can take your time to figure out how to progress. The use of primary colors throughout the game, and being a core mechanic, feels simple at first, but actually becomes challenging in ensuring you are applying those colors correctly while completing the puzzle. This aspect might frustrate some players looking for a straight forward 'run and gun' experience, but for the puzzle lovers, you might really enjoy this.

→Pros
-Fun gameplay
-Easy to pick up basic mechanics
-Leaderboards for competing with other players
-Challenging Puzzles
-Dev Team is very interested in player experience

→Cons
-Some elements could be better explained (looking at you 'paint reflecting' walls)
-Short overall game (speed runners are completing it in ~2 hours)
-Limited replay ability outside of improving speed-run times/score/achievement hunting

→Summary
Overall, while experienced 'portal runners' might find the game on the easy to moderate side early on, some of the later puzzles may make you stop and rethink your strategy a few times, or in some cases even force you to restart the level. This, to me, makes it worth your time if you're into action style puzzle games, like games that try different takes on the 'portal' style of game, or just have that twisted bit within you that enjoys a fun game that tries to constantly kill you!

→Playthrough

Simple description - This game is brutal.

Honestly, I cannot decide if I like it, love it, or hate it for the random challenge it provides since you're never sure if the RNG system is completely random or actually out to get you!

Long term replayability is likely to be limited since the game is only 10 turns long, and "side missions" are variations on a theme (screw over 1 team for the benefit of the ship/everyone/the other team, or the reverse) which adds to the frustration you'll experience while trying to save your ship and crew.

This is probably the closest thing to a "real life" simulation I've ever seen for those times when you do everything "right" and the universe let's you know just how little it cares. So if you don't enjoy games that are stacked against the player, that sometimes feel like they're cheating, or that make you question your sanity, you probably will not like this game.

But that rush you get when things do go your way...

Do you dream of adventure, slaying dragons, fighting giants, drinking your profits away the night before your next quest? Or do you want to be the person selling to those fools who risk their lives for a moment of fame?

If it's the latter, you might enjoy this game, one part "adventurer tycoon", one part janitor, and all parts fun, this game is about that most loved (still counts if you love to hate them) role in adventuring, the equipment merchant!

The game starts out a bit slow, order a few cheap items, sell them for as much as you can get away with, and quickly progresses into the realm of real (mostly) legal highway robbery! Ah, the life of a merchant, just be aware that even in your little slice of heaven you will still have to deal with the most dreaded of adversaries... customers!

It's a fun little romp of a title that can be a real time killer, but you may eventually get bored with the "rinse/repeat" (buy, sell, murder a shoplifter) nature of the game as it is right now. It's an Early Access title, so anything/everything could change tomorrow, but even as it is, it's a lot of fun if you like other games in the genre.

Pros:
Fast paced gameplay
Easy to learn mechanics
Frustrating in that (usually) fun way
Wealthy Customers
No garden gnomes

Cons
Customers
Rinse and Repeat gameplay
Relatively "Short" gameplay (3 hours in and already about 50% of the "missions")
Customers
Did I mention customers?
