Why do I still keep coming back to this game, even after completing it a month ago? Is it the amazing soundtrack, the level design, the frustrating challenge the Limiters provide, the versatility available to you in the form of different playstyles? Not sure. Keep them coming, Supergiant.

This game looks great, and the gun/swordplay is quite good. I enjoyed the system of being able to customize your character with different parts, and forge new ones. While I haven't played much, what I played was enjoyable.

Unfortunately, this system (and the enemy/level design as well) comes crashing down due to glaring lack of variety, causing repetition from run to run, and even level to level. While the game advertises a huge variety in enemies (8736) and procedural design as selling points, how much of this is simply respriting the same designs?

The time Cave Story was released in 2004 allowed the lone wolf delevoper to make a bigger impact on game culture than many small studios are able today. Gameplay that would be called unoriginal today, would be called revolutionary in the early 2000's PC gaming market. Who knew an "early 2000's" story could be so engaging?

This game is part of a group of few games from the "freeware-flash game" era from the early days of the Internet that stood the test of time. It's up there with other freeware games like Spelunky and N that set the stage for a huge amount of games that would come after. Cave Story was an instant classic, and it holds up today with tight controls, a great soundtrack and timeless graphics. Creative character development, and varied level and enemy design keep Cave Story feeling fresh...pretty much all the way through.

The real question is why I didn't pick it up sooner.
