:Six_Alone:In the early 80s my dad brought Pong and it was magic using the ancient controls on our black and white TV. After Pong I played on a friend's ATARI 2600, a friend's Philips Videopac and another friend's Commodore VIC 20. In the end I got a C64 with tape recorder :steambored:. Several years later my dad bought a 8088 (XT) and a world opened for me. Struggling with disk drives and no knowledge of MSDOS, PC architecture and software in general I taught myself. Then one day I saw a Commodore Amiga and I was hooked. :er_heart:. One of my friends went on holiday and he was kind enough to lend me his computer. That was an amazing time.

As time went on, PCs became better and with the release of games like Wolfenstein and Doom it showed how the future would look like. I got a 486DX2 with a 100MB harddrive. More of my friends got into the hobby and together we were having a great time playing all the new releases. Then graphics got so much better with the release of the 3dFX Voodoo 1/2 cards and later NVidia. :dcshocked: Games like Jedi Knight with the neon light just blew my mind. I got into a clan when UT released and for a while I was quite good.

While I remained interested in gaming, real life events and obligations stopped most of my PC gaming in the period 2006 - 2019. I did play DS, WII, Switch and even mobile :mhwno: , however deep in my heart I remained a PC gamer (for a while I did play Guild Wars II - doing midnight raids with friends :LN2SixMono: finding all the bosses).

I'm excited for the future. In Elite you had a text screen indicating your cargo, now you have Star Citizen where you can suddenly see the cargo you purchased. Or Elden Ring that just stuns in level and game design or Forza with hundreds of cars and so many things to do or games like the Witcher III or the Borderlands series. It's great that we can experience this and I wonder where we will be in the next decade with ever more powerful hardware and AI assisted design :zagwow:

So what's it about?
You're a fisherman without a boat. A town far away is looking for a new fisherman as the old one has disappeared and you're happy to take the job. It's all about fishing, right? Right? I won’t spoil it too much.

Dredge starts off very strong: fishing, collecting item, fulfilling quests and improving your fishing boat into a proper ship. All the while there is a deeper mystery that slowly comes to the surface. There is something eerie about the deep dark oceans that Dredge manages to capture well.

The good
The mood is so good and probably its strongest point. When night comes the visuals change, the music becomes ominous and you rush to a safe harbour.

I love the graphical presentation: it may look simple at first but it supports the game really well. If you're familiar with The Legend of Zelda: Windmaker it looks similar but darker.

The sound effects are serviceable; there is no voice acting. The music really shines and the sound track itself is worth listening to.

There are so many fishes and other items to collect. Then there is the whole upgrade/crafting/give new abilities to your ship loop that is also amazing.

I love how the inventory system works: it's similar to tetris without the pressure (most of the time).

There are many quality-of-life features added to the game: a global inventory, shops are never far away, different ways of catching different stuff to keep the game engaging.

It's great that you can research better abilities - and there are more abilities to discover but only if you complete certain quests.

There is even a mist horn, you can unlock ocean and crab fishing and there are so many cool animals (and some scary ones) that swim in the ocean.

The not so good
While Dredge has a very strong start after a couple of hours the game becomes more of the same. Many quests are fetch quests and while you can make your ship faster and discover other ways to navigate the map, it's more of the same. For the DLC it the same thing: strong start but weak finish. I noticed that I had to put myself to playing the game as I wanted to finish it, then I realised this was not because I wanted to play or see more of the game but just because I want to get it over with so it was time to retire it.

Some mechnics are not explained so well but a bit of trial and error goes a long way.

Bugs and glitches
The photo mode is a bit buggy: at times the user interface disappears but you can't take a photo and have to restart the game.

The DLCs
There are five DLCs: the only ones that are worth it IMHO are the Iron Rig and perhaps the Pale Reach; both add new areas, fish, quests and equipment to the game.

Summary
It's been a long time I had the "one more turn feeling"; Dredge brought it all back as you want to progress on so many levels. It has a very atmospheric feel to it; something similar as when I played Subnautica. As time goes on you start to realise the game is rather shallow and most quests are similar. At the point that I realised I just wanted to play the game to finish it instead of having fun it was time to move on.

Should you buy it?
Buy it on sale: it offers some good things but you may find it drags on for too long with not enough depth.

So what's it about?
You are in a large city and you start with a junker car. As you progress in the game and win races, you unlock better cars and other vehicles. You need to explore the city to find new events and races. As an arcade racer, it's similar to the Crew although I find The Crew 2 has a better execution and looks and plays much better. I'm probably spoiled having played Forza 4 & 5 and Hotwheels as well - they're all much better games.

Is it fair comparing a remastered version of a 2008 game with modern releases? Well you would think that with a remaster would bring it more up to date but even getting it to run was a challenge.

The good
It's nice to have a fully voice introduction of what the game is about, the events and all other tutorial stuff. It grows old fast though - I wish we could turn it off.

There is a selection of different vehicles to choose from - as you win more races you unlock more stuff.

It's a cool touch on how you need to start your car.

Most vehicles have several options to customise; it's mainly changing a pattern and colour but it's cool it's included.

The not so good
I couldn't start the game initially because of the EA launcher (see below).

Then I had to find more workarounds as the EA launcher interfered with my controller (see below)

The game is old but the remaster is not as old as GTA V, yet GTA V looks better and feels more alive. Burnout Paradise Remastered feels empty and dead.

The physics vary from terrible (cars floating above the road) to good (crashes look quite good; the same for launching from a ramp).

The sounds are not great.

The game is not very optimised and many texture are blurry.

The presentation is cringe at times.

The AI is brain dead.

It's mostly driving around, driving back, doing a race, driving again - very little else is on offer. There are many discoverables but what's the point if the main game feels so hollow?

I didn't care too much about the many rock songs (Guns & Roses is great but not if you hear it every time. You can switch songs or just turn them off together and put of your own songs on). Forza 4/5 have a much better sound track IMHO.

Bugs and glitches
It's shocking that in 2025 the EA app still malfunctions: "Failed to launch game - "Error on our end" even when you launch the game from Steam. I found that the EA App doesn't like it's own EA overlay. Turning that off in the settings resolved the issue. This is not great at all.

When you finally get around the EA app you realise that the controller connects/disconnect every few seconds to minutes. Again we have to disable more stuff in the EA App and use workarounds like https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/profiles/76561199058998514/myworkshopfiles/?section=guides&appid=1238080 to get it finally working (I have a 8BitDo controller).

The DLCs
It's the remastered version so all previously released DLCs are included.

Summary
Burnout Paradise Remastered is mostly for the nostalgic crowd that enjoyed the 2008 version. My expectations were low and still I was disappointed: getting it to work was a nightmare and then when you're finally in the game it's like the middle of the 2000s again. There are much better games that you should play instead: Forza 4, Forza 5, Hotwheels 1, Hotwheels 2 or The Crew 2. It was a waste of my time.

Should you buy it?
Nope: stay away from this one.
