Commander Vimes didn’t like the phrase “The innocent have nothing to fear,” believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like “The innocent have nothing to fear.”

At the time of writing Look Outside is seemingly criminally overlooked. For the level of content density and how successfully it pulls off an incredibly specific tone and vibe, Look Outside is up there in the pantheon of exceptional RPG Maker games, along with OFF, Lisa, Omori, and Undertale.

The pixel art is exceptional, there are so many unique creature designs that it's actually kind of staggering - and the imagination behind some of them is genuinely impressive. It's a credit to the art that you'll often find yourself deliberately getting into fights solely to see new creature designs.

In terms of gameplay it's not too far off a much more forgiving Fear and Hunger, and with the current version the difficulty balance is very much frontloaded - starting moderately challenging and becoming fairly trivial once you gain party members and level up/equip yourself. Personally I actually quite enjoyed that as it thematically felt like it fit. As the game goes on both the player, and main character, get more used to the weirdness happening in the building and the initial horror gradually gives way to more dark comedy. That's not to say there isn't humour from the off, but the balance of horror to comedy naturally slowly inverts as the game progresses.

I'm trying to avoid anything too specific here, as I would highly recommend you go in blind. There are multiple endings, and while certain things will pan out similarly in most playthroughs, the sheer granularity of some of the changes within that broad structure, and a little dose of RNG, serve to offer a broad degree of variation that rewards multiple playthroughs.

Another aspect that really deserves highlighting is the sound design, it varies wildly across the game but always serves to enhance the tone and maintains a consistently high level of care and quality. In the early game it's mostly ambient soundscapes that really heighten the tension and horror, while some of the later areas have actual music and some legit bangers (the ground floor track is a particular highlight).

Can't recommend this enough, it was a breath of fresh air and I really hope it gets the attention it deserves.

PS: Steam store indicates it has no controller support, but played through the entire thing on an Xbox controller no problem. So if supposed lack of controller support puts you off, I wouldn't worry in this case.

UPDATE: Thanks to the 2.0 update which adds loads of additional lore, enemies, allies, areas, and endings, this has cemented itself as my personal GotY for 2025. For how cheap it is, it's a no brainer. If it rewarded multiple playthroughs before, it practically begs for you to go back now. There are secrets upon secrets, much of the original content is expanded, and there's heaps of new content too.
