This game lives in that sweet spot of being janky enough to occasionally ask yourself why you are spending your free time like this, but then immersive and evocative enough to charm you all the way through to the end. Ultimately it's a winner, and the EXCELLENT writing and characters (their design, their development as the game goes on, their actual motivations) makes it stand out amongst more polished releases out there. It's also a really nice how much stuff they fit into a single city - so many characters, storylines and places - and lots of optional things that you can genuinely stumble upon and the space to pursue them throughout the overarching story.

If you enjoyed Tyranny, and don't mind weird visual bugs, overlooking the odd continuity issue, and lots of running around, then this is a great game and world to be drawn into. Looking forward to their next game and hopefully with the resources and time to give it a little more love!

oh this was such a treat. learning that loco motive was built on the same engine (powerquest) makes a lot of sense - there's similarly lots of rich animation and style running through every character and room. i wasn't expecting much of a story but it had my attention all the way through, it didn't pretend to be extremely clever, and was carried by solid writing and voice acting (a bit drama school at times, but hey). appreciate all the effort that went into this one. great work devs - hope you keep making these kinds of games!

Another great feather in the Wadjet Eye cap. Old Skies is a story about memory and remembering wrapped up in a steadily escalating "private detective" procedural drama that culminates in the (now) classic Wadjet Eye Conundrum -- what would you do? How far would you go? Why is this digital media making me feel things?

To clarify, the detecting is less whodunnit, more chaperoning of clients who want to do something in that past. It's handling of these requests (and the clients!) when the mission to the past ends up unravelling fairly quickly each time -- "no plan survives first contact" to paraphrase one of the characters -- where the fun (and paradoxes) begin. Being an modern P&C adventure game, the jeopardy isn't real and there isn't any meaningful fail state to get into as there's a story to be told. If you enjoyed the writing and characters in Resonance or Unavowed, you'll be pleased with Old Skies.

Some puzzles are tricky but reasonably so, others are fairly straightforward. Not a lot of inventory management and bashing things together (which I prefer in modern/realistic PCA games). Lots of nice QoL things too (easy travelling between places and within screens, dialogue skipping - useful in time loops!, etc) and some lovely bits of animation and design. Voice acting is commendable, though the premise (many time periods, many geographic regions) does stretch the voice acting talent a bit thin at times.

NB: This game is pretty up front with its inclusion of stuff that people love calling "woke" today so if you want to avoid that kind of thing then yes, stay clear. Also try having a little less hate in your heart.

Really well-made and animated game - a lot of love went into setting up an interesting (and different kind of) story and bringing it to life. The themes are interesting, the voiced dialogue is well done, and the difficulty is just right (with a built-in hint system that's reasonably accurate at just giving you a nudge instead of the answer). Really enjoyed this. Some might consider it short but I don't, not for the price and quality.

The puzzles are very good. Some new concepts have been introduced (e.g. a chronological element within a 'case') and there are some really fun cases in this game - which altogether make this an evolved (in a good way) Golden Idol experience. The UI is a bit fiddly at times, and some more prominent keyboard shortcut-ting would have helped make it easier to work with the various panels. Nothing too tedious but as the number of panels increases later on in the game, it can get a bit hard to work across them -- and particularly when cross-referencing "meta" panels with the case ones.

Story-wise, it's a tough act to follow RotGI, but I believe CG did a good job telling a largely original story in the same universe that had some kind of a payoff in the end. DLC-bait (i.e. threads that go nowhere in the base game) was prominent in some of the cases, so some people may not like that. I enjoyed the diversity of the cases in terms of how they contribute to the story, but there was a lot of overlap between many cases in the middle, without contributing much to the main story chain.

A lot of effort and love went into this, and it shows. LOTS of voiced dialogue as well. It won't be groundbreaking in the genre but it does almost everything right and has a chatty but lovable heroine to boot.

Good humour too, and well-written dialogue. Strong recommend it for anyone who loves their media littered with pop culture references mainly from the 90s/2000s.

UPDATE: The devs have been pushing multiple, major updates over the last few weeks, which is surprising. This includes reworking parts of the game, streamlining dialogue (which, remember, has ALL been voiced), and making improvements based on feedback (e.g. adding a better epilogue). It's fairly unheard of in the world of adventure games, from my experience, and very welcome, so please give them your support (i.e. money). They clearly love this game, and want you to love it too. They're great.

Admittedly, I'm playing combat on story mode but enjoying everything else tremendously. It's one of those where you'll especially enjoy it if you like reading and are willing to immerse yourself in someone else's world-building. And as a fan of alternative history and well-thought-out supernatural worlds within the real world, the team did a great job lovingly creating this world, its characters and their conflicts. It's all fully voiced as well, even if the English voice acting is often a bit bored-sounding or even uncanny.

This is also a beautiful game. Some very talented folk at Fool's Theory. Kudos.

Another really good adventure game from the team at Postmodern Adventures. Solid characters, environments and puzzles -- scratches any classic adventure gaming itches perfectly.

Solid, enjoyable and fun game. Enjoyed the story despite the somewhat simplistic ending (but it ties most of it up nicely and in an uncomplicated way, which is good enough) and some really good characters and environments. It's not really too scary so don't let that put you off but indeed there's some gore and the odd small jumpscare but nothing gratuitous.

Really well put together branching narrative sci-fi tale. It takes a lot of inspiration in style and dialogue from classic 2d point-and-click adventures, but instead of lots of item manipulation and deep dialogue trees, you're given cases to solve which are mainly revolve around a central math/IQ puzzle with the hints scattered across dialogue trees and exploration.

They don't feel like puzzles because of all the storytelling wrapped around each one, but that's essentially what they are. There is detective work to be done a la the modern Sherlock games (select who you believe is the culprit) with varying degrees of ambiguity, and there are in/correct answers which you will find out along the way if not definitively at the end. I enjoyed how everything tied together storywise, and the choices the developers that both respect your time (e.g. fast travel, conversation history) and provide small additional challenges (e.g. time-sensitive dialogue - which you can opt out of - and the optional encounters and 'side' case you can pursue).

A couple of puzzles were very opaque and frustrating but I have no doubt the developers will improve this. They're very responsive, helpful -- head to the discussions or their discord if you wish to see for yourself.

Overall, I recommend it for those who enjoy these kinds of games -- it's a slightly different formula to most of the common genres you'd label this as, and if you're not one of those choices and consequences weirdos who wants the game to become either a bullet hell shooter or rhythm platformer in the 2nd act based on whether you pet the optional zebra in the opening sequence, then I think you'll enjoy the story.

p.s. If you want the CRPG version of this game then I recommend playing Colony Ship.
