The execution of this remaster is astounding, they've upgraded just enough for it to make sense - without ruining the core experience of what made Oblivion, Oblivion. That said, I nearly refunded in the first 5 minutes finding out male/female options had been changed for some 'type 1' and 'type 2' bodies - incredibly offensive.

Running unexpectedly well for a UE5 title on my 6-7 year old i9-9900k and 2080Ti build at native 4k, with no upscaling, on a mix of low/medium settings - and with low hardware ray tracing enabled. A just about acceptable 40-50fps depending on the area, but an awful lot better than using blurry upscalers to me. No stuttering or hitching, though I did have to enable Nvidia Reflex + Boost as out-of-the-box input lag was unplayably bad.

What I really can't stand is the anti-aliasing options, all of which look blurry - and in general there's a lot of texture fizzling and constant pop-in which is incredibly distracting; really feels like a step backwards in that regard.

In general - I feel the team at Virtous did an exceptional job, other than promoting gender dysphoria; and all that really lets this remaster down is similar issues seen with every other Unreal Engine 5 title.

The music is fantastic as ever, and the new voice work is done to a high standard.

I waited a good few years for this to make its way from PS4 to Steam finally, then down to a reasonable price - having first played the PS1 original about a year after release, I'm mostly bitterly disappointed.

Firstly the port itself is an absolutely rushed mess, I had to resort to mods to remove blurry dynamic resolution scaling, and then override settings in the NVIDIA control panel to fix screen tearing.

The engine is really old school, no graphical options, no modern shadow/reflection/global illumination techniques. While some of the character modelling is excellent, all skin has that UE4 kind of plastic shine to it, and generally feels like out-dated technology was used during development - or the PC port was just utterly butchered and handicapped. The environment is a weird mismatch of high/low resolution textures - where some would seem more in-place in the original 1997 release. Given how bad the port is, this is going to be a very hard release to even rescue this via the modding community.

I couldn't hate the new battle system more, effectively seems Square decided that 'smash square' in-between turn-based commands was a good idea - and it really detracts from what was the core experience of FF7 itself. The reworked materia system and such is well-thought out (though upgrading weapons seems like an unnecessary afterthought), yet the actual 'battles' feel like a pointless button mashing exercise. So far the game has also been ridiculously easy, with boss fights just being longer (and not harder) than regular battles.

What's really good is the general cinematic direction; all-but seamless transitions from cut-screens back to in-game action; and a fantastic orchestral score too. Art direction is superb in general, just held back majorly by the engine/platform used, then a half-arsed port.

The biggest disappointment overall was being taken from the Mako reactor explosion in the original game straight into badly written 'fetch quests' with map indicators/icons to stretch out content - like the worst of all modern games where real creativity is dead. I've quickly started to lose all interest. The NPC system is pretty craptastic too.

The release currently feels like a B-Movie sequel despite great dialogue writing and general direction, it's just executed poorly.

I really hope when the trilogy is complete Square decide to combine it all into one on a better and more modern engine, stripping out all the filler content, and also while providing a proper turn-based battle system.

Grew up with the Baldur's Gate franchise, Icewind Dale etc. all the way back to Eye of the Beholder, I've read many books in the D&D franchise and generally cherish it. While the move to Larian's engine from Divinity works fantastically, I feel Larian have completely ruined this game trying to sexualise everything. Why all the nudity, why the constant homosexuality, why try sexualise anything whatsoever? It genuinely feels like some horny teenager wrote half of the dialogue.

End of the day, I couldn't play this game with my own kids in the future - and that truly sucks.

Overall, this has to be an upvote. It's the classic mechanics from Streets of Rage I-III, with graphics lovingly bought into the modern age, while doing the franchise proud in terms by reworking old characters, enemies and even stages to some degree. In that respect this is in every way the modern-retro nostalgia fix you're looking for.

What kinda sucks, is that after the first 6 stages or so seemingly having been carefully planned, prepared and polished - the game then suddenly starts to lack pace, with short easy-to-win stages, until you beat the game on a final boss that feels extraordinarily easy itself compared to many of the earlier ones. It felt like little reward and climb to the end. You'll also find the SOR1 retro characters are almost unbeatable once unlocked, allowing you to cake-walk the entire game without much effort.

I truly was expecting a much longer game, but with awesome graphics, low system requirements, remote play, and a really addictive well-written soundtrack - it's a thorough recommendation nonetheless.

Addictive, well balanced and has developed well into the years without becoming the kind of micro-transaction hell which most similar games are. Having not spent a penny, I find I can compete and that's how it should be.

Right now, there's a faction or two which are almost too weak to be competitively playable at a high-level, but hopefully the next expansion further buffs the weak, and nerfs a few over played tactics right now. I'm sure the same statement will always be applicable though to some degree :)

One of those games you can easily pick-up and drop out of for a quick round or two, I'll probably be doing it for a while yet.
