An absolutely fantastic experience. Sincerely one of the best games I have ever played, even as someone who isn't a JRPG buff. If you are willing to play an RPGMaker title and love an excellent, thought-provoking story with great music and art, you must play this game. Like everyone else says, this is best experienced as blind as possible.

Maybe it's a little bit of the nostalgia talking, but I adore this game. I remember that we had one disc of the original game and the expansion, but we burnt discs of them and I played LAN with my siblings.
Okay, time for the actual review.

It's a simple RTS game, and that's a huge part of the charm. I know people compare it to Age of Empires II, but I wouldn't know how similar they are since I've haven't played AoE. I find the gameplay very relaxing, but it can be challenging when you ramp up the difficulty. The AI can actually be something dangerous and you have to match a pace with them. If you pick no allegiances in a standard game at the setup, generally all the AI will join into one team, and they don't respond to any negotiations, so keep that in mind if you play.

Outside of having a randomly generated map and playing against either randomly generated AI or ones you define, you can play kinds of "story missions" that are actually set in the Star Wars lore. They generally have specific objectives to complete with special units/characters involved. Haven't done too many myself, but the ones I have played were fun, and what more can you ask for? In addition to that, you can actually make missions of your own with the Scenario Editor.

Now, the vanilla game is a bit limited graphically, but it's still completely playable. However, if you want to play with widescreen patches, 60 fps, and a good deal of new content for FREE, there's a mod that provides you all of this: Galactic Battlegrounds: Expanding Fronts. It's lovingly crafted with new sound effects, two new civilizations to play as, more things to research as you play, an increased maximum total of units per player, a new maximized map size... You get the idea. For some time I was playing the vanilla game here on Steam, but I recently picked up this mod and have found new life breathed into the experience. Maybe those who want to revisit the game will be interested to know about this mod.

This game has always been special to me as someone who enjoys some lite strategy gameplay and Star Wars. If you're a fan of both those things, this game is very much for you.

NOTE: Please keep in mind that online servers have long been discontinued for this game. LAN/virtual LAN setups are an option for you to play with your friends!

This is a delightful treat of a game!

The soundtrack absolutely made the game for me. The music carried the emotion while the story just hung dry on its own (for me, I've heard about people that sobbed over the story). Don't misunderstand -- the story isn't bad at all and is pretty interesting, but it's not godsend or anything. The simplified pixel graphics add to a goofy charm that may be missed in some other titles.

There are interesting mechanics and ideas behind the gameplay that tie in well with the story -- a commendable feat -- which is the main draw. When I first played it, these things were spoiled for me, which is rather a shame. Regardless, I was still able to immerse myself and enjoy what was there.
The comedy seems entirely hit or miss; if you a fan of more childish humor and jokes, then it might be for you.

Bottom line is that I believe this game should be played by those who are interested in consequence of action/a bit of character exploration and a soft spot for RPGs. You will have to play this more than once to experience the full impact of the game and truly understand all sides of the story. If that isn't your thing, maybe just pass this up. Otherwise, add this to your library.

Don't be discouraged by the fanbase. All in all, it's a good game that deserves some recognition.

Honestly, if you asked me what my favorite game was, I'd probably first point you to this - this relic from 2007 that always has great replayability. The inventory system in this game has always been favorite of mine from all the others. The character creation makes your character either ugly or uglier, a key feature. It is from this game the Adoring Fan NPC spawned, and much more interesting and bearable things. I treasure this game so deeply, I can only hope for future justice to it through maybe a remake or update of some kind (far-fetched, especially with the Skyblivion project). Regardless, mods are always here to keep the game fresh and add endless content. The Vanilla version is still incredible in and of itself, much more than I believe Skyrim was, even though that too had merits.

Incredbile game, must-play for any RPG fan.

I... Don't know exactly WHAT to say.
I just finished the game and while I sympathize with many on a few issues in it (namely the background pixalation at times and the overly challenging Act 2 puzzles), I must recommend.

The story is incredibly charming, in my opinion. I didn't mind the development in Act 2 as much as others seemed to in their reviews. Maybe I'm blinded by how much I love Elijah Wood's voice acting, but I respected the growth between parts. Shay and Vella's development run in parallel to each other well, and I liked how you could always switch between the two mid-play to further them together. The main problem in Act 2 for me is how you eventually need player knowledge for both protagonists to progress. Something you learned as Vella you need for Shay's side, and vice versa. It removes you a bit from the immersion you should have with this adventure game, ESPECIALLY near it's climax (where this is occurs).

All in all, I give it about an 8.5-9/10. Somewhere around there. Buy this on a sale if you fear you may be disappointed by anything. Read around for more reviews to get an understanding of what irks people.

The graphics are stunning (if your computer can handle it) and help set the mood of the narrative.
This is one of the best experiences from a game I've had. It will make you feel things you didn't expect to fall into. Regardless of how long this is, it's a definite must-have. Pick it up on sale and enjoy!
