I've never been more upset at a game for making me love it. There I was, about to finish the game and move on to one of the dozen RPGs I haven't finished yet, and then it ended on one of the worst (best?) cliffhangers I've ever experienced. Maybe if the game didn't have such a well-done story with great characters and simple yet enjoyable gameplay, then I could've held off on buying the sequel for a while longer. But no, this game just HAD to have the gall to be a wonderful experience. I'm so upset.

On a more serious note, this game is certainly not perfect. The gameplay, while fun, definitely takes a backseat to the story, and can grow a bit tiresome after a good amount of hours. Speaking of the story, it might be both the game's greatest strength, as well as it's greatest weakness. My finished game file shows about 45 hours, and two-thirds of that is mostly world building and character interactions, with some small hints of a larger plot here and there. Don't get me wrong, the world building was very well done, and it did a wonderful job of making me care for the characters... but until the payoff happens, it can be a bit of a slog. I started playing this game in February of 2016, and didn't complete it until November. If you're willing to push through a slow beginning that lasts for almost the entire game, then I would definitely recommend this game, because it really is worth it in the end. Just be prepared for a long journey, and maybe bring some tissues for the end.

I probably have an intense phobia of giant cave bats now, but other than that, it was pretty good.
9/10, too many nightmares.

Guilty Gear Isuka is... difficult to recommend. On one hand, Guilty Gear will always be a great fighting game even with a few detriments, and the soundtrack is arguably worth the price alone. On the other, besides the unique soundtrack, this particular version of Guilty Gear is pretty much pointless to have now that there are others on Steam. It's really just Guilty Gear, with a more novel than truly enjoyable four-player gimmick (that I will admit I never played with four people) that's bogged down by a flawed (though necessary) change, namely the need to press a button to turn around. There is a beat-'em-up styled mode along with it, but again, it feels more novel than fun, never really feeling fleshed out to something good. Even the new characters aren't worth it alone, with A.B.A. being in a standard Guilty Gear game now, and Robo Ky Mk. 2 feeling more like a gimmick than a character. The included soundtrack isn't even the full one, missing songs like A.B.A.'s theme (which is my favorite track, so that's a downer). I just can't recommend it unless you really want all the Guilty Gears on Steam, you don't mind an incomplete soundtrack, and it's on a decent sale. Otherwise, go with one of the X2s that are available, or Xrd -SIGN- now that it's here too.

Suguri is, as you probably have gathered by now, part of the Bullet Hell subset of Shoot 'em Up's, but a very unique take on it.

You're given a lot of freedom in movement, thanks especially to the dash mechanic, which has the added bonus of allowing you to dodge certain bullets. None of the stages dragged on too long, and they actually seem to get shorter with each passing stage. You have a large range of weapons to choose from, but you only start out with three of them; the more you try the stages, however, you unlock more weapons.

The story is simple, but it's actually pretty good; the characters all seem unique, thanks in part to their fights, but you don't see too much of their personalities until the sequel, Acceleration of Suguri. The art is also a bit simple, but it did grow on me; the sprites on the other hand look amazing, with the enemies sharing a distinctly different style compared to the chibi-esque style of you and the bosses.

The music, on the other hand, is overall a bit above average; while there were certainly standouts, namely the final boss and the entirety of Stage 4, the rest is pretty good at best.

Oh yeah, and this game is insanely hard. On my first playthrough, I could only manage Easy Mode, and even then it took me quite a few hours just to beat it. After getting more accustomed to how the game worked, though, I did finally manage to beat Normal Mode; it did take me a bit longer than it should have, however, thanks to my save data getting corrupted (I still don't know how, either).

Overall, if you're looking for a difficult game that takes a while to get used to, but is a blast once you do, I would easily recommend it; it's easily become one of my favorite Shoot 'em Up games I've played, though I do still prefer its sequel.

Alright, if you're here, then you probably know what the "bullet hell" subgenre is, or at least its parent genre, shoot 'em ups (from now on referred to as "shmups"), but if not, I'll briefly explain:

Shmups are generally defined as any top-down or side-scrolling shooter, such as Galaga, Space Invaders, and many others. Bullet hell games, on the other hand, take this to the EXTREME; some of the screenshots for this game should show you just how many bullets you'll have to deal with. To compensate for this, your character's hit box is extremely small, really only a couple of pixels big, so that this is at all possible.

With that out of the way, the actual review!

The presentation:
Generally pretty good quality sprite work; I wouldn't say it's anything outstanding, but certainly nothing to scoff at. The menus are a tad bland, but function well, and aren't boring; just simple.

The story:
It's a little hard for me to comment on this one, honestly; the story isn't really well told throughout the game. To give an example of how important the story is, there's an option to disable the pre-level "cutscenes", which are only one screen with text and some pictures anyway. I believe it has something to do with humanity doing something dumb, and that causes some evil person to attack (again? I'm not sure; I haven't played the first game), and you, being part of some millitary group, have to go and face her. Not terrible, but not super deep either. But that's probably not why you're here, is it? You're looking for...

The gameplay:
Is fantastic. Before you start the game, you have the choice between two characters, Eryth and Earl, and another once you beat the true final boss (which, I should mention, I have not done). Now, there are two conflicting sources on the amount of characters; one (this very Steam page) says that there are two starting characters, with the unlockable third, while the games official webpage states that there are FIVE characters, along with an unlockable sixth. Neither of these are completely correct. The second character, Earl, is actually a customizable character; you can use one of four presets, or you can mix and match her three selectable abilities. These abilities, of which Eryth has as well (however, Eryth is stuck with one skillset), include your normal shots, "bombs" (which almost never actually includes using a bomb), and "Mana Action", which requires your Mana bar to be filled up; this can be done by killing enemies. The game isn't too long, probably about an hour or less if your good; but that's a pretty tall order. The first time I played through this game (playing as Eryth, Revised (normal) difficulty), it took about two hours of multiple retries to get past these five stages. Despite the difficulty (which is pretty normal for these kinds of games), I had a blast, and felt extremely satisfied once I finally conquered it. Thanks in no small part to...

The music:
Now, personally, I loved the music. It's probably one of my favorite game soundtracks, and I'm not exaggerating; I rank this up there with Cave Story, Mega Man X, BlazBlue (the collective series), all of those amazing soundtracks. And the soundtrack actually comes including in the Steam folder for the game once it's installed, so that's a huge plus. However, looking at another review, it said that the musical wasn't all that great. So who knows, I might be in the minority on this one.

Overall:
Hopefully this review didn't end up being too long-winded; I don't exactly have a lot of experience with reviewing. However, I found myself having to hold back on how much I said, because I quite bluntly love this game. It's one of my favorites, and I'm pretty sure the next few days will be spent on getting the achievements. I hope you decide to pick this game up, because it's definitely worth it; I plan on buying the other games in the series at some point soon as well.

Pretty Dang Great, As Always

I've been a fan of the Blazblue series since Calamity Trigger (Portable, specifically), and have bought some form of every game ever since. This version is a suprisingly good port, though it can feel slow at times with the framerate always around 30 FPS. There is no online, though this honestly doesn't affect me much, as I've never been much for online play. Overall, I don't really have much to say besides I enjoy this game, and it's problems don't really outweigh it's positives. Plus, you get the amazing soundtrack for free. That's pretty sweet.
