I'm not usually fond of simulation games like this. I like the idea, but they usually feel like work to me. This one, however, I'm really enjoying. There's enough humor to keep it light, and the way you can usually do all but one or two jobs makes it so you end up picking the stuff you enjoy doing and automating the rest.

This game can be harsh, but I'm having a blast! It was very confusing at first and there's still a couple of things I don't understand well. Either you spend some time watching other people play and a couple of videos with tips for beginners, or you better be prepared to not understanding how things work. I took the latter route and it didn't detract from my enjoyment one bit.

So, this was touted to me as an "indie Skyrim". It doesn't feel indie at all, and I think it's closer to Skyrim predecessors in many ways. So, really, what you have to ask yourself is whether you like games like Skyrim, and if the answer is yes you should give this game a try. I got the free demo, and thirty minutes in I stopped playing to buy the full game. And, by the way, the save game from the demo doesn't transfer to the full game, so be prepared for restarting if you decide to buy.

I have limited tips. First, archer is awful early game. Maybe they'll balance it out, but by the time I even found a bow I had already leveled up other skills to match or surpass it. Second, mage is powerful from the start! Do not fear being a low level wizard. In fact, mages are damn powerful in this game. I did not try a heavy armor build but I suspect it sucks early game as well -- not only you won't have access to heavy armor, but heavy armor has a significant mechanical penalty you'll have to overcome with the skills you buy as you level up. Finally, whatever you choose at the start actually has very little impact. You level up what you do, and you can do everything.

As for criticisms, I don't have many. I wish Price/Weight (or vice versa) was a sorting option on the inventory, I wish the meaning of "Stash" was more obvious (infinite inventory usable when selling stuff and most of the crafting). I'd like to see what I got for completing quests and I really dislike being unable to stop a conversation if I don't have the levels for the option I'd like to take.

I might mention that the graphics are significantly worse than I'm used to, but my computer is over 10 years old, back when GTX 1080Ti was king of the hill, and it hasn't been upgraded since.

This is a tower attack/defense where players make towers for each other. The main action of the game is the tower attack, but making the bases to be raided by other players is an integral part of the game and the game rewards players appropriately for it. You don't lose anything by having your base raided unless you explicitly opt for maximum risk/rewards. Essentially, it's a Single Player gameplay with Multi Player elements. The levels are interesting, and the graphics are very pleasing. In a very creepy kind of way.

I do have criticisms, though. The sense of progression has been a mixed bag. You advance by buying things with the stuff you got from raiding, and that's solid. There are five "advisors" that you also evolve using raids, but what you get out of it is extended duration on one-time temporary boosts you buy from them, and I hate using one-time boosts you have to pay for. Then there's your own level and the level of the freak you work for, and those things don't seem to have any impact whatsoever on gameplay and that has been rubbing me off the wrong way. Disclaimer: it might just be I haven't played enough to learn what their impact is.

I've seen this game compared to a lot of games that are way more complex. I think what this game achieves is a well balanced step up in complexity between the simpler survival games and the more hard core ones. It's not Easy Mode, but it isn't Insane Mode either.

One of the best crafting/survival games out there. Technology progression is seamlessly handled by availability of materials, which are tied to biomes. Each biome represents a "stage" in the game, with an exponential increase in difficulty. Building is very interesting -- I can't stop making bases! -- with a structural integrity system that places a high value on mixing materials. Fight is fun. It is the most grindy game outside mods I have ever played and, yet, people who hate grindy games have been enjoying it tremendously.

Surprisingly relaxing for a game about being all alone on an endless ocean. The visuals can be stunning at a times, and collecting resources and slowly building up your dinky raft while uncovering secrets from the past is rather rewarding.

This is the first survival/crafting game with a true tower defense component I've played. 7 Days to Die intends to be that but I have always felt it very lacking. Here's what this game offers:

* A wide variety of traps with fun mechanics and animations.
* A wide variety of tough enemies and bosses, with powers and stats, that get you thinking about how to design your base.

On top of that the game has a story with an end goal, and the world feels BIG. Fight is not overwhelming but enemies are dangerous enough that you need to respect them.

The world isn't fully destructible -- very few survival/crafting games have that -- but mechanics, gameplay, tech tree, weapons, crafting are all solid. I've seen people asking when it is going to come out on console already!

The game is little over a week out on early access, but even if it was a gold release I'd be totally happy with it.

The premise of the game looks interesting, but, so far, playing it has been incredibly frustrating. Let's start with the first interaction of the game: Press A to Continue. Naturally, I have no "A" to press, as that's a controller A not a keyboard A. The game defaults to controller. The game says using a controller is the preferred way to play it. I hate controllers and I won't use them -- if that's not your case, ignore my comments about controls.
The mouse/keyboard controls seemed to have been made by someone intent on making them as difficult to use as possible. Trivial things like looking around _with a mouse_ are made incredibly difficult. Let's give an example: I'm close to another member of my tribe and I want to know who that is. If I use E to identify that member, the information will be off my viewscreen because they are close. If I move the mouse to look up, it exits the information mode. I have to move further away to see the information, or next to them to analyse.
Shift, control, alt, the standard modifiers we use to change modes like sprinting, aiming, looking around without changing direction, etc, they are not put to use. Left click and right click are used in unnatural ways and in an irregular which results in a constant fight to get what you want done. And some of the key combinations are just mind-boggling, like pressing control and up-arrow (up arrow? that means taking your hand out of the mouse!), then pressing space, then pressing W... In summary you'll get very frustrated if you play with mouse and keyboard.
Next, the UI. The UI is full of symbols which are meaningless to me. The tutorial shows some of this stuff from time to time -- usually when it's least convenient and you are concentrating on something else. And you better memorize them right then and there, because I can't find any information about what I'm seeing in the HUD afterwards.
And speaking of user interface, there's no apparent way of skipping the introduction, and sound levels do not seem to be respected in it, which leaves the game blaring in my ears, and keeping anyone from hearing what I'm saying on stream.
But what finally pushed me over to write this review is that if you inspect one particular spot in your starting area then an event happens that moves you elsewhere, and good luck finding your way back or continuing the tasks you were doing.
Oh, and there's no save game. There's no way of getting back from _looking_ at something and having that change the game irrevocably. Or just experimenting with different ways of doing stuff without having to restart.

I've never played any other game as much as 7 Days to Die, even games I think are better games. There's two reasons for that.

First, as an early access game, it gets regular updates. The updates are months apart, but there hasn't been a single one that didn't introduce fundamental changes in how you play the game, making it new again.

Second, the replay value is unmatched. Whereas most tower defense games bog down to the most efficient solutions, you have to live with your design in 7 Days to Die, which means aesthetics end up taking precedence. But, unlike games that offer you immense customization on your base, the need to defend it effectively forces you into be always looking for new approaches. And, adding to that, what you make depends on what sort of character progression you choose, and what kind of thing you find in the world. Oh, and, of course, random generation worlds.

7 Days to Die is not the best survival game, it's not the best tower defense game, it's a middling FPS game, and, for now, it's a very poor RPG, but it is absolutely unmatched in how it combines all these elements.
