Not sure what angle they were going for with how they ended this game but they should have called it "Max Caulfield and the Multiverse of Madness" because they certainly try their hardest to make this the next Marvel; but now with indie folk lo fi music. The kicker? it ends with "Max Caulfield will Return" ...
I was so let down by this ending I ended up playing the first game again to wash the taste of this games ending out of my head.

I bought his game at launch partly because I like the idea of shadow dropped games but also because this looked fun and innovative in the 'guitar hero' genre. These games used to be more staple during the ps1-2 eras but they always seemed to hit a brick wall with development. the creators of this game mustve felt the same and clearly had a passion for it to bring rhythm games to the next level.
The majority of the soundtracks are remixes or enchanced versions of 2000s era songs, The Black Keys, Fiona apple, Nine Inch nails and some covers songs like The Flaming Lips which I would have never imagined getting thrown into an action combat rhythm game.
This game can get fairly challenging and luckily I have a pretty good ear for music (this game works better if you pay less attention to the screen and more to your ears) but I can imagine it being a nightmare for those less inclined.
anyway loved this game
loved the art, the characters
the music the presentation and the passion the devs put into this. Not every game needs to have AAA money and if the recent outpour of games from giant companies prove that money doesn't = a better product.

i'm so glad that after 31 years I can still make my friends rage quit by spamming low sweep.

This game is OK, good for Riot Game enthusiasts but for anyone else a strong maybe?

Sylas is a great character and setting him up to be a protagonist is a little out of character for him in my opinion, some of the dialogue just didn't seem like him. The overall tone of the storyline seems to be pulled in two different places. It can't decide to be lighthearted or serious and it struggles w both because of the limited Pixel art. Don't get me wrong, being an older gamer pixel art has a special place in my heart but with a game of this subject matter and overall lore for the character I wish I could see it given at least the AA game treatment. While I was playing through the combat all I could think about was how much cooler it would have been if it looked like Hades or a third person perspective.

Ok onto the gameplay. Quite simply put - levels are filled with trash mobs that are a boring slog rock paper scissors
It gets pretty old quickly and the maps are not dynamic or interesting enough to keep you compelled. Theres pretty much only one route and its impossible to get lost. At most you miss out on a silverwing and some supplies but that is about it.
What is good though is the boss combat. Fighting the Demacian champions was pretty cool and it was great to see how they translated the league of legends champion kit to a 2-D space like this. If this game was strictly a boss rush game I feel like it woulda gotten rid of a lot of the boring elements.

the base building seems halfway cooked as well. You recruit mage and your little base slowly grows and stuff gets added like training grounds, an inn, a garden, a hospital etc, but what do these locations do? nothing. They unlock a part of the map that gives you 1 or 2 chests just filled with the currency and they look pretty.

anyway, TLDR

Ok game
meh maps and traversing and trash mobs
good boss fights
lacks the urgency and importance I would like to see in a game
overall decent but the deluxe version is not worth it in my opinion

This game has so many flaws but I find most of it quirky and endearing so I can look past the underdeveloped social simulator aspect of the gameplay loop. Its just a tad disappointing because you can see the potential that could have been. I kinda wish this game was a full on x-men game and you were playing as a new recruit making friends w all the other x-men students and instead Professor X is the "caretaker" who is a god awful character. Hunter ain't much to hold a candle to either. Combat and card collecting is what makes this game balance out cuz that part is snappy engaging and fun if you're into this kinda strat game.

What I cant forgive though.

WHY DOES EVERY CHARACTER STAND WITH THEIR KNUCKLES ON THEIR WAISTS????? EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER.
It makes it seem like every character has a pole shoved up ..... yknow..

this game woulda been an 8/10 but since the knuckle stance i drop it to 7/10.

Great on sale.
