I've played thousands of games throughout my life, hundreds of them on Steam, and only bothered to reflect on and write positive reviews for about 7 of them.

Enderal is the only game (I don't bother calling it a mod anymore, it truly is it's own game) that I've now written a review for TWICE, once for regular and now 6 years later, for Special Edition. It's left such a strong impression on me that I've taken the main story and spun it into a homebrew TTRPG campaign that ran for years, and my friends loved it.

I'm not going to dig into the stuff that have already been covered in other reviews, such as my previous one, so I'll just point one thing out: the brilliance of this game lies in how they took the 'chosen one' trope of most RPGs and turned it completely on its head.

It's outrageous how, to this day, I've never met anyone who's played more than a couple minutes of it, when everyone and their dog is into skyrim mods. Don't be like them, don't miss out on this one.

A great game and a fine finale to an epic journey.
But Trails isn't about the individual games, the series is meant to be taken in as a whole, so I'll review it as such.
Trails brings a lot to the table, with its engaging and fun combat system, huge cast of enjoyable characters (a little too huge, honestly), and it's overarching plot as well as it's terrific world-building that ties every game together. And of course we can't forget the soundtracks. Falcom music team never disappoints, and I'd say Cold Steel 4 has some of their best ones yet.

However, I do have my complaints. The plot has some problems throughout cold steel, there's lots of stalling (you know the "heh I was just testing you!" battles) and even right up to the end, the motivations of the bad guys don't make a lot of sense. Classic anime villains, I suppose? Overall, it's fine as long as you don't take it all too seriously. Perhaps my biggest complaint is Falcom's unwillingness to commit to any character deaths/tragedies in their stories. This really lowers the stakes and makes things predictable. Try to please everyone and you'll wind up pleasing nobody.

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend the series, but you have to start from the beginning. No, not Cold Steel 1, you fool. Further back! Start with Trails in the Sky and go from there. The gameplay formula, combat, and general style is consistent across all 9 games, so if you like Sky, you'll probably enjoy the others.

One thing people thinking about trying this should understand is that this is hardly a mod. It's basically its own game using the assets of Skyrim and a few of its own.
But that's all semantics: what's important is that it's good. Really, really good. As in, I-just-beat-it-an-hour-ago-and-rushed-to-write-a-glowing-review kind of good.

It's a beautiful game. Skyrim had it's moments but overall I felt it had drab coloring and weak textures, even for a game of that time. It did have to run on a 360, after all. Enderal is a treat to the eyes with the bold beautiful colorful scenery that you'd see in Oblivion.

The gameplay is very much Skyrim, but it includes some overhauls from other mods that are a welcome addition, particularly when it comes to magic.

What really sucked me in, however, was the story and characters. TINY SPOILERS incoming if you'd like to flee now but I'm just going over the basic premise.
Think the Mass Effect trilogy, with the whole "impending orchestrated extinction event", except its a psychological thriller, and a lot more. Vivid, abominable dreams and visions (assembled very well despite the limitations of skyrim in-game cutscenes), an ominous, foreboding atmosphere with well-written characters that ask the right questions to make you want to learn more, confounding mysteries leading to horrific truths and realizations, a few tough choices that make you wonder how your character isn't a broken mess yet, and an ending that slaps you in the face (in the best way possible) with a stunning finale to an already superb game. I'd also like to point out that this is one of the few times I've encountered multiple endings and I loved all of them.

Skyrim comes out on top in terms of sheer content, certainly, but considering it took me over 70 hours to wrap up Enderal (I didn't even do nearly all the quests), it's certainly well worth the money- oh wait it's FREE. Well, can't beat that, can we?

I'm not great at describing music, but the OST is phenomenal. I didn't hear a track I didn't like, and there are quite a lot, probably way more variety than your typical Elder Scrolls game.

Some minor gripes I had was that they didn't do much to improve melee combat from original skyrim, which was at least good enough I suppose. There's a mod specifically designed for this mod to improve that (among other things), by the way. Big framerate drops in some areas were annoying but I kind of expected them and they weren't frequent enough to hamper my experience. And finally, I would have preferred more custom textures and assets. Pretty much everything came from Skyrim and in some situations, it felt like something specifically designed for the setting would have been more appropriate then just tossing in the closest thing from Skyrim.
But, as I said, all minor gripes. Nothing that was bad enough to really detract from the good.

I'm also not good at conclusions. Just play this ♥♥♥♥, for real.

ITS FINALLY ON STEAM

I'm shaking, someone hold me

I've played this game on and off for nearly 8 years. It is perhaps the best free single-player game I've ever played (It does have multiplayer too!), a damn good turn based strategy with RPG elements that is way better in terms of gameplay, content, and story than many full priced games of the same/similar genre. Its awesome to see it on Steam, getting the recognition it deserves after all this time. It also means a much more populated multiplayer scene.

The thirteen or so campaigns to choose from offer hundreds of hours of content, and that doesn't even include the many additional downloadable campaigns. Each one is unique and entertaining enough that if you enjoy turn based strategy, you'll be like me and never get sick of this game. Some of them are hard as ♥♥♥♥ so don't be ashamed to bump them down to easy.

I gotta admit, I miss some of the MS paint artwork placeholders. They were pretty hilarious.

Easily one of the best roguelikes out there. I'd put it at number 2 in my book.
The companions are terrific; each have their own stories and quests. I don't think I've ever seen a roguelike with a story that was actually compelling.
The spell casting is phenomenal, something I could never enjoy in Nethack, Slash'em, and other turnbased roguelikes.
Terrific soundtracks, another thing that many roguelikes lack. I'd say on-par, maybe better, than FTL soundtracks.
IMO, this game has an excellent balance of luck vs tactical sense (Its not a total crapshoot but there is enough randomness to make repeat playthroughs rewarding and fun.
Incredible sense of adventure as you flee the oncoming doom from the west; different biomes offer unique challenges and enemies.
Most people don't realize there are actually THREE ways to win. If you think you da man just because you stomped the demon lord, think again. You ain't done yet, lil ♥♥♥♥♥.

And... its 87 cents during sales. You could buy a soda... or you could save half that money and buy a game with at least 20 hours of content. What a time to be alive.

Galciv2 was easily my favorite 4X game of all time. So, you can guess that I was pretty damn excited for Galciv3. When it was half off, there was no stopping me from getting this game.

All in all, I think Galciv3 is a worth successor to 2, which is really saying something. The ship building is great, the addition of carriers and fleet-boosting modules is terrific. The starbases and strategic resources are awesome, too. Planet planning has gotten more in-depth than before as well. I was worried this game would be simplified to meet the modern standard but I'm glad that wasn't the case.

With Galciv3, I've noticed 3 glaring issues:
The soundtracks: theres literally ONE soundtrack for the main galaxy screen. It gets very tiresome very fast. There were like 5 or so in galciv2, and they changed based on the situation (ie warfare music, early game music, late game music). In galciv2, each faction had their own soundtrack. Not the case anymore. I do hope more are added with future patching.

The AI and the dialogue: AI is decent overall, but they do some really strange stuff that makes no sense sometimes. But whats worse, the dialogue is even less diverse than the soundtracks, which is a huge step back from galciv2. Now, there isn't any faction specific dialogue, and most dialogue isnt even ideology-specific (evil races say the same things as good races in the same situations). Every time I played Galciv2, I'd find the AI saying something new that I've never seen them say. But right now, this game could use a lot more dialogue. It's such an easy thing to add in too, I really hope they diversify the AI musings a bit. Even if they just copied the text from the previous game, it would be something.

And finally, this freezing, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The constant freezing is literally Hitler, pls fix. Sounds like its a problem for everyone, too.

Other then those issues, terrific game, 9/10. I can't wait for expansions.

I've played this game for nearly four years, on and off, before getting it on Steam when my harddrive died.
This game is not for the casual gamer, or anyone with high blood pressure.

You will laugh, you will cry, and more than anything, you will die a lot. In all of my time playing I've only ascended one time, and only with the help of bones files (random drops from previously slain characters) and thoroughly studying nethack wiki.

I have two tips:
One, start with melee heavy characters like knight, barbarian, or valkyrie. They are much easier to play, before you get used to the trickier classes like wizard and tourist.

And most important... don't get attached to your pets. Ever. It will lessen the pain.
