clunky but absolutely GOATed. although if you want to stop it from freezing and you want to improve the way the game looks, you're gonna have to put some legwork in. this may help someone, so i;ll put it here

to stop the game from freezing every 30 seconds
- edit your hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc using Notepad or similar software.
- paste this in somewhere and save.

NOTE: this folder is admin protected - if you can't edit it in place, copy it into Documents, edit it there, and then paste it back in to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

this file, hosts, redirects traffic from one IP to another. there are a couple IP's you can try redirecting. if you're in Europe, the IP seems to be different - I had to discover this myself using WireShark because nobody else seemed to know what the address was.

why do you have to do this? because ubisofts original servers are no longer online, and the game pings those non-existent servers every 30 seconds or so. by doing this, you're redirecting it to your local machine instead.

EaglePatch is a mod which increases shadow resolution and also fixes various issues, including controller reconnection issues and whatnot.

with these edits, the game will be WAY more playable, and you can play AC1 as god intended!
