The closest you can get to a cyberpunk Berserk.

Pros:
Great Graphics
Pretty good story
Very well drawn and stylised art
Fast paced and enjoyable gameplay
Incredible soundtrack, including a track from Sumusu Hirasawa (the creator of the 1997 Berserk soundtrack)
Everything mentioned above creates a constant oppressive and depressing atmosphere that fits the cyberpunk setting perfectly

Cons:
Some of the powers aren't really needed, on the flip side the slow down time power is kinda OP
The ending doesn't quite scratch that itch
Pretty short, I beat it in 4 hours

Incredibly interesting and deep artistic dream exploration game. Despite being over 15 years old it holds up fantastically.

EDIT: After playing through Stir of Dawn, it seems everything I asked for was considered.
The map system has been reworked, and an in-depth pin system has been added, making it much easier to revisit areas looking for collectibles that you saw but couldn't reach yet.
A stunning FIVE new bosses have been added, along with updated new artwork for some of the more bland areas and a bunch of new characters and questlines, all in a FREE update that any other studio would have slapped a price tag on. I feel like my review still stands, though I have revised my TL;DR pros and cons.

After 16 hours, I beat Blasphemous and got the true ending. Here are my thoughts.

Blasphemous is a hardcore platforming metroidvania game with a dark theme and setting. The artwork in this game draws heavily from Spanish renaissance paintings and religious works, and is truly a unique and beautiful game despite the pixel medium. The game has a surprising amount of cutscenes given the detail and effort that must have gone into them, I think I counted around 7-10 during my playthrough. The story is vague and alien with most of the lore being hidden in item incredibly detailed item descriptions giving insight into a particular topic, which works to the game's favor by adding in a mysterious and ominous feeling (think Hollow Knight or Dark Souls).

The enemy design and basic combat are fun and engaging. Many enemies feel unique, and their frame by frame drawn animations make every encounter feel good. With a controller (which I highly recommend to anyone playing) each hit causes the controller to vibrate just a little, making it really seem like there's some weight to your swings.

Despite the unique and deep world to explore and tame, as well as the absolutely astounding artwork (some scenes in the game must have taken weeks to draw, it's honestly crazy) the game's flaws come from the actual gameplay.

As a souls veteran, I'm no stranger to difficult experiences, but a few hours into the game, the difficulty had jumped from easy to incredibly difficult. I had been wandering a swamp filled with mindless monk enemies that took a mere few swings to fell, and had ended up in snowy peaks where leech-men and bell ghost things were making short work of me in a matter of seconds. Nevertheless I persisted and defeated one of the three bosses the game sets you up to face. Next I ventured down into a strange chasm filled with chains and bells, and defeated my next boss. As I went on though, I realised through the help of the steam global achievements that I had defeated the hardest two of the three bosses, and upon meeting the final foe of the trio, I first tried him. I think this helps to show that the level design can be a little confusing, I mistook the obvious hard difficulty as intended, and as a result was much more powerful than you're meant to be when fighting the first real boss of the game, so I think some better indicators of where you're meant to go could be needed, then again this is my experience alone.

My second gripe with the game is the combat, and let me tell you; skills are basically useless. I found myself almost never utilising any skills outside of my basic attacks, basic dodges and parries the entire game. The charge attack feels useless, you essentially always get hit when charging it up, and the payoff is lackluster, as you do the same amount of damage with the combo skill: a useful skill, it's upgrades are a bit useless though as again, they seem to do the same amount of damage. The long range skill is also useful, you need it for collectibles and you can dispatch enemies easily, but outside of the basic combo skill and ranged attack, the plunge, dodge-thrust as well as their various upgrades feel more troublesome than they're worth.

And to emphasise: I never managed to pull off a plunging attack once in my 16 hours of gameplay.

I don't know if I'm stupid or what, but the instructions for the attack - down + attack - are useless, I sat for a good five minutes every now and then trying to pull one off, I couldn't even managing it when my character was falling down a huge well!

The map system also is a big drawback for me. A lot of the areas and items you'll encounter initially will require a relic - an item that "shapes reality" by creating platforms or allowing you to move in a hazard - in order to reach them, and some relics are very confusing to obtain (the three tongues relic required a lot of thinking for me). While this wouldn't be a problem initially, once you realise that all the items and moonlight babies you missed are invisible on the map, you'll have to search entire areas should your memory fail you in order to get those juicy collectibles, an issue that could be fixed either by enabling the player to mark the map manually with an X, or by adding in a pin system akin to Hollow Knight. But really though. Imagine playing Hollow Knight with no pins. It's like that.

The last gripe I had with the game is that the bosses are sometimes disappointing. I found myself in late game areas fighting a boss and killing it on my first or second attempt, and with the upgrade system requiring you to search areas for upgrades rather than spending money to level up, I wasn't even overleveled for the encounter. That being said, many of the bosses still have a lot of effort put into them both in terms of animations and mechanics (seriously the archbishop was my favorite boss by far), but for me a lot of the challenge was missing, especially on the final boss which was pretty disappointing difficulty wise for the climactic final fight of the game.

All in all, Blasphemous was a unique and pretty fun experience, and despite the flaws present in the game, I'd still recommend it to fans of the genre. I'd give it a 8/10. The art, theme and soul of the game really really carry it for me.

EDIT (Minor Spoilers): Another thing I've realised, as far as the endings go, it's a pretty big oof. The "true ending" of the game is incredibly hidden, and I don't necessarily mind that, I do mind however how the "normal" ending is absolutely brutal and crushing. It feels like a kick in the face compared to the true ending!

TL;DR:

Pros
-Incredible (can't stress this enough!) style and artwork
-Good story and world building
-Enemies are designed well, each enemy is memorable and well animated
-Basic combat is fun, attacks feel weighted
-Received a gigantic free update that added an incredible plethora of new content

Cons
-Some skills feel a little awkward
-World design is confusing at times
-Some bosses feel way too easy
-Brutal ending if you don't know about a very obscure secret

Imagine if over 50% of your dps was locked behind a hidden mechanic that no one told you about until you had 1500 hours in a game.

Imagine if that hidden mechanic literally gives you carpal tunnel.

Bad game design is bad game design.

This made my hands sweat and my fingers bleed.

Nuclear Throne is comparable to Isaac on methamphetamines, packed with bullet hell nonsense and a crazy assortment of weapons, perks and interesting, unique characters. The gameplay consists of point-to-shoot style combat and when you die, you start again with unlocks acquired along the way. This seems simple in writing but oh man, it presses you to extremes especially after beating a "loop" of the game, which starts you out at the beginning of the game, and only makes the game harder. There's a plethora of interesting bosses too, ones that require luck, skill and muscle memory (looking at you Captain) and its replayability is tailored to your interest in playing it as there are a lot of difficult unlocks. To top this off the pixel art is lovingly crafted, with cute, lively sprites (that only drive you to kill them) and with excellent visuals comes excellent audio with this spaghetti-western styled soundtrack that plays intensely under furious mouse clicks and flying bullets.

I honestly recommend this game to anyone looking for an EXTREMELY challenging, yet equally rewarding experience.

10/10

(P.S. My hours no where near represent my actual experience, played the hell out of this on console beforehand, and oof, its much better on PC)

A game which came before Undertale, and should be given double the amount of praise.

LISA tells a gritty and dark story of a broken man who's life is thrust into chaos following the end of the world, and his struggle to redeem himself through raising the only girl left on the planet. The tale weaved throughout the game utterly crushed me at its ending and penultimate climax, and left me feeling empty and sad as I realised just how much I cared about the characters and their depressing journeys.
Honestly, I was utterly blown away at the detail of sprites, clever jokes and one of the most compelling worlds I've ever had the honor of exploring: Olathe, a post-apocalyptic wasteland wrought with heartless gangs and qwerky characters. LISA plays like your average classic RPG, having the ability of collecting and managing party members and items, encounter-styled fight sequences and tough turn-based battles. Overall the combat and general gameplay is nothing special, many aspects have been done before to different degrees, but LISA makes it much more enjoyable, as each fight doesn't feel like a soulless grind fest, but a genuine, life-threatening encounter.

All in all I've no gripe to pick with the game, as it does an excellent job of creating enjoyable gameplay and an incredible story. This is a must have for any fans of darkly written plots or turnbased RPG gameplay.

8/10

If you're looking for a hardcore stealth game, this is it.
This game honestly rocks at what it does, especially on the hardest difficulty: "Goblin", which will make you feel like a real greenskinned runt as you die in one hit, yet are able to strike effectively and clear a path with enough thought.
The story for this game is very interesting, which was something I did not expect at all. The design of Styx is well done and the voice actor really sells it with his witty remarks and curses, and also does a good job of conveying the underlying torment of Styx. This alone has made me interested enough to look into the original game which this is a prequel to: Of orcs and men.
My one gripe about this game are the cutscenes, which use are animated rather poorly, with objects floating in character's hands and lips not being synced up properly, but don't let this sway you from buying the game, it makes up for this with great storytelling and compelling gameplay.

TL;DR
Excellent stealth gameplay, a story that really drives you, poor cutscenes

Any fan of dishonored or the metal gear franchise should definitely give this game a look.
9/10
