This game is absolutely worth playing.

Why it's worth it:
- Wuthering Waves is extremely free-to-play friendly. Not only do you receive many very playable characters for free, some of them (Sanhua and Verina) are S-tier characters that can carry your account deep into the late game. Additionally, the main character is a top tier character in a variety of meta teams, with updates to their kit happening periodically that keep them playable. This means that investing heavily into the main character doesn't waste resources at all and is generally concidered a very good choice for your account.
- The skill floor for getting into this game is very low. Just pressing your basic attack button can get you very far in the more casual events, the combat challenges in the overworld and in the story quests. You can safely enjoy the rich scenery and vibrant characters casually, without worrying too much about team building strategy and sweaty rotations. The game does this while keeping the skill ceiling extremely high. Investing time into learning tight rotations and planning your teams correctly will net you a great deal of rewards and very satisfying gameplay.
- The sheer amount of content in the game is baffling and the fact that this game is so free-to-play friendly feels illegal at times.
- The way this game gets you to spend money is by simply delivering absolute quality. Wonderful character designs, and super-satisfying gameplay all convince you to support these amazing developers as much as possible.

Certain things to keep in mind:
- The writing, especially in the first story quests, is very conflated and elaborate. If you're someone who's into science-fiction, you're probably going to be quite familiar with terms like 'frequencies' and 'reverberations'. Forget all that. These words have entirely different meanings in this game and you should try, as much as possible, to keep an open mind about that concepts being explained.
- The voice-acting in some characters isn't to my taste. This is very personal and let me be clear: most characters have fantastic voice acting! But, with some characters, particularly Augusta in this case, I feel like the accent is forced. This might be something particular to my European ears, but the transformation of certain vowel sounds is inconsistent, which to me screams; 'this person is acting out an accent they don't know.' Again, personal preference.
- Much later in the game the endgame content becomes repetitive. When all the quests are done you end up in a daily gameplay loop that's not too exciting. Luckily, the developers add new content to the game quite concistently so these periods of content-drought don't last too long.
- And, of course, the elephant in the room: fanservice. This game is a JRPG Gacha game. This genre is known for the occasional sexualisation of characters. The truth of the matter is very simple: it works. Not all players are as sensitive to it as others, but there is still a part of the target audience that expects some fanservice in these games and player counts will noticably drop whenever a character is introduced that isn't being given the same sex-appeal as others (the release of Quiyuan was proof of this). People keep buying into it, so companies will keep doing it. Personally, I'm not very sensitive to this treatment, but I will boycot characters for whom I think the fanservice has gone too far (I'm not getting Cantarella for this reason.) Yet, overall I think Wuthering Waves has managed to keep the amount of fanservice to a reasonable amount. Add to that that they've given many of the women very complex characters, with well-written lore. They are generally portrayed as powerful and capable women, with their own agency, as opposed to the helpless princesses that we often see in other video games.

Since this game's launch I've been a fan of it and have been following and playing the game. It's quickly risen to one of my favourite games ever.

Which is why it pains me to say that this game still leaves a lot to be desired.

Inventory
Absolutely everything in this game requires inventory slots. I often find myself, and I'm a few slots short of a fully upgraded exosuit, in need of extra inventory slots. One of the issues here is that there are so much seemingly redundant variants of resources. There's Cadmium and Activated Cadium. Both can be regarded as completely different from one another, even though it's not quiet clear how exactly they are different. Why are there two Cadmiums?

Freighters
You can't properly build a base in a freighter, because it resets when you buy a new freighter. This effectively stops me from upgrading my freighter again, because I like my freighter base now and don't want to redo it.

Frigates
The frigate rating system is weird. Effectively, sending a two-star fleet on a two-star mission is just a tad too difficult for them. 9 out of 10 times my frigates come back with damage, and nowhere in the game does it communicate to me what it is I'm doing wrong. And sending a two-star fleet on a one-star mission feels like I'm missing out on greater rewards.

Story and identity
Finally, I'd love to see more of the individual races. I'd like to see more places that are important to the lore, more characters that are important, that were modelled uniquely. To really get into the lore that is so rich and beautiful. What if I warp into a system and a big freighter like I've never seen before warps up in front of me and it's owned by an important Vy'keen warlord who invites me to prove my worth to him? What if that ship has Vy'keen shopkeepers that sell uniquely Vy'keen items and upgrades that you can't get on space stations? What if I can meet up with Apollo and join him in space battles? There's still so much that's possible in this regard. I think it's important to take a break from the algorithm every once in a while. That Vy'keen warlord I talked about? Model him. Don't let him be procedurally generated. The reason I say this is the fact that the procedural generation produces things that are just weirdly random enough that in the end they turn out looking rather same-y, and that loses a lot of the magic over time. I think that's rather much of a shame. Because the character design itself is incredible!
I would love to see more historically important places. Settlements and maybe cities made by the races, that are important to them.
The ships for all races look the same. Sure, there are differences between systems and types of chips, but I can't tell by being shown a ship whether that ship is a Korvax or Gek ship or whether it's a C class or an A class. It would be really cool if there was a way to acquire rare ships through missions, very particularly Korvax ships or ones that are uniquely Vy'keen. Maybe Hirk's old ship or multi-tool are somewhere at the bottom of an ocean, waiting for a Traveller to come along and fix them. In-game unlockables that can't be acquired through just flying around and talking to NPCs.

Minor UX improvements
Finally, there are some UX problems that bother me. The Galaxy Map for instance. Sometimes when I click and hold a galaxy, it selects that galaxy. And sometimes, it warps immediately. Since warp cells are not the easiest resource to come by, especially early on, it's rather annoying when you're warping somewhere you didn't mean to warp to.
Lastly, there are some issues with quest wording still. Some quests for instance require you to find "a Korvax cartographer". What you meant was, you wanted me to find one very specific korvax cartographer but didn't word it that way. This creates an opportunity though; if you want me to find a specific character, why not make it a special character in the lore? Model this person so they stand out from the rest and let me meet another interesting person in the lore, rather than interact with yet another character that looks the same as the others.

As you read these things, remember that I think this game is incredible. I think, in terms of quality per person that worked on the game, it's probably one of the greatest games ever. But that's why it frustrates me even more that I'm missing something. And that's also why I'm hoping people will play this game and enjoy it as much as I do. Let's let Hello Games know that we care and that we are waiting with arms wide open for all that is to come.
