Phenomenal game. Like many others I bought Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. Why wouldn't I? I had just finished a third or fourth playthrough of Witcher 3. Projekt Red had proved themselves capable of deep and immersive storytelling, along with a robust game engine. Whatever they had cooked up for Cyberpunk was going to be amazing.

Plus, as a 70s baby, growing up in the 80s on Neuromancer - THE cyberpunk story - and the Cyberpunk RPG, hell, even the 80s and early 90s with the growth of mega corporations, and the ethos of government felt like we were heading for that near future dystopia - this was ticking all the boxes for me.

Like many others as well, I also was initially disappointed. Performance issues, bugs, the delayed launch fostering more scrutiny and criticism. There was something there for sure, but along with everything else, the move from a gamepad back to mouse and keyboard after a long time with 3rd person Soulslikes and open world titles didn't sit well with me and it was resigned to the Backlog, where it sat for several years.

During this time, I was peripherally aware of the patches, bug fixes, and new content being created by the team at Projekt Red. As an ex-software developer, I could imagine the costs of this ongoing support and knew they must think they still had a chance to break even - even make a profit on what had been, frankly, a fairly disastrous launch.

I've got to say now, having finally picked the game back up 5 YEARS after purchase - kudos to the teams who have worked so hard on this. The character development, story arcs, background details - most of which probably existed from the get go - are incredible work. Not to mention the absolute behemoth that is Phantom Liberty DLC. Brilliantly realised.

CDPR - you've made an extraordinary game - not a perfect one, but one that's really, really good - something that speaks to the Cyberpunk I once was, something that compels me to drop back into Night City to score just one more gig.

And on top of all of this, the experience and performance on the Steam Deck is absolutely incredible. I've seen a lot of technological advances since my school years in the 80s. Being able to play this game on a deck is frankly, frightening.

Jack in, chooms.

Bioframe Outpost is a captivating experience, both visually and from a storytelling perspective. You are quickly drawn into this quirky world, which is familiar but with some key differences.

The biggest is maybe the shift away from direct combat with the various lifeforms you encounter, instead you are guided to find ways to distract, counter, and learn about them by collecting information, which is largely done via a camera which can collect and collate data.

This is really a large part of the game and emergent style gameplay takes a front seat as you learn about the different ways the creatures and obstacles act and react with each other.

Secrets and alternative routes are also a feature that is highly touted although I've yet to complete consecutive playthroughs to discover a lot of them.

The narrative is really well written as is all of the descriptive text of the hazards and objects you encounter. It feels like a rich and well realised universe, and this is enhanced by the beautiful ambient soundtrack.

If you're looking for a platformer style game with a lot of replay value that falls outside the normal jump and shoot formula, this is worth a look.

Editing to add - I'm playing this on Steam Deck and it's running perfectly.

Lords of the Fallen is a satisfying and worthy member of the Souls-like games currently available. As well as sharing many similar mechanics to Dark Souls series (including Bloodbourne and Elden Ring) it has a number of unique characteristics as well to set it apart - the biggest of which is the addition of an Umbral realm - a second dimension occupying the same worldspace as the real one, but which is themed to a suitably spooky and dark design, and which you can move into and out of at will with the use of your Umbral Lamp, available from the start of the game.

Visually, it's very well executed and realised. PC owners benefit perhaps from the most extensive graphical options and I've seen varying reports of performance vs quality on the lower spec console versions, but from a personal perspective as a PC player I have not suffered from any performance drops or visual issues like tearing or dropped frames. Both the real world and Umbral Realm have their own unique characteristics, and whilst there are definitely areas that seem familar in terms of reused textures, dressings or geometry, the overall feeling of a vast and interesting world is not diminished.

Design wise - the worlds are extremely well designed with many branching paths and hidden areas that interconnect in a believable and satisfying way. As well as the usual hidden deadends, the Umbral Realm mechanic offers a greater variety of pathing options and repeated exploration of areas becomes much more rewarding.

Enemies have a decent variation of design, although there are still some balancing tweaks being made to the standard enemies and drop rates for rare loot is widely (currently) disparaged. There is again a certain amount of re-use which is to be expected. A divisive decision is to include several enemies as mini bosses throughout the game, which are then encountered later as slightly less powerful versions. Some people see this as diluting the variety of enemies, although I think it's a fair way to introduce powerful foes that have specific weaknesses.

Boss design - another staple of the Soulslike games, LotF2's bosses are well designed with interesting movesets, with perhaps only one that is more problematic in terms of the useful strategies that can be brought to the encounter. These bosses can be challenging for those new to DS style encounters, but should provide a familiar sense of accomplishment when beaten.

Overall Lords of the Fallen 2 is probably one of the the most successful contenders for the Dark Souls crown, and whilst it still falls a little short in some respects, in others it demonstrates some unique and really quite interesting mechanics. Glad to see as well that the Devs are actively pursuing improvement patches and balancing.

PS please improve the inventory management :P

Liked this a lot. Very atmospheric. The story telling is great, all of the dialogue, collectibles and side missions are genuinely well done. The TV slots are amazing. Solid mechanics, some interesting game play and a really compelling storyline make this a great buy, especially with the two DLC.
