Wow - a WRC that works. Finally.

I really enjoyed playing this with freinds. Then when the event ends, you put us into opposing factions randomly. Why would you do that to your customers that are trying to play together? I don't understand.

Update:
Well, I am still playing it months later which should say something. The thing that tripped me up the most was/is that every time I looked into something that I imagined being simple it turned out to have significant detail and depth. Trading, capturing horses, chatting with NPCs even. There is so much more than meets the eye.

It was all overwhelming so I stopped trying and just walked across the map to areas where my character level should not be. It let me. Then I tried to walk back (no fast travel) and found I had to take a different route. I died so many times. Took me two weeks. Best fun I've had in a long time.

Its deep and intricate, but it doesn't make you do anything. Just go have fun. Thanks Steam, but I don't need an undecided anymore - even if I don't know how everything works. Most fun for $10 in a long time.

I was real excited about this all the way through level 18. Fantastic combat system.

Then I tried to do some specific things like fishing, horse taming and it started to fall apart. It is a seriously complex and intertwinned system. It usually works, but begrudingly. There are times were it just makes me quit.

I really like this game, but it really tics me off. Not sure I can play it much more, but I want to. I am divided.

Hey steam - I need a "undecided" button. As it is, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and recommend.

Inventive, gritty, scary, heavy, deep.
Stong story, puzzling, melee combat, atmosphere.

You really should not miss this one.

It plays like a not-quite-ready alpha. I was ready to forgive until I found out it was nearly a decade old.

There are also some really bad game design decisions. Like super long cut scenes to explain the story instead of showing you through game-play.

Melee combat and other animations like jump are just silly. No audio in footsteps, gunfire (yeah I turned it on in audio).

Great concept story. Someone else should redo this in modern guise. I would pay for it. Won't play this for free.

Mostly fun. Not easy. But fun. If you like PVP, you should have this.

Used to be a lot of fun. Doesn't seem to work anymore. Uninstalled.

I've learned a lot without accidentally shooting my friends in the face. Recommended.

Will be testing throughout this weekend.
TLDR; Buy the older titles
Disclaimer: I am a fanboy and WANT to recommend. Mid level driver. Have lots of sims. Don't care for arcade types.

First 18 hours:
Finished a championship, drove each type. Tried a lot of stuff. I am not impressed. The only new thing is the team management and although there might be something interesting there, I can't find it. It seems more like an early release game with 70% of the promised content still missing.

Its like one of those sampler trays you get from the grocery store. It has a little of everything. You've seen them all before. They are all basic ingredients - nothing special - and there isn't a lot of any one thing. They're fine if you are hungry, but if you want a real gastronomic affair, it simply won't fit the bill. I think that is what gets them all the bad marks. People expected fine dining based on the marketing presented. They got salami on Ritz crackers, and the crackers are stale.

Recommendaton:
If you want a sampler. This is pretty good and modern interpretation. It's rather solid and is a great taste of what can be done. Good atmosphere. Good music. Easy to start.

If you want to sim race, get the previous titles - Dirt Rally, Dirt 3 and maybe Grid Autosport. Then round that out with Assetto Corsa, Race Room Experience.

First 11 hours:
If anyone thinks cars have too much side grip, they should try an Australian dirt track in the wet.
Pro:
Glad to see they still have the daily/weekly//monthly challanges of DR
Garage build-up is at least new, but don't know that it gets me much more than steam achievements
Finaly ralley championship is about 36 stages - should be interesting

Con:
The joyride drives are interesting but the structures you drive on that make it fun can't be had anywhere else so you can muck about and have even more fun.
Can't save a video of the race from in game. Not even a clip of something funny you did. Sad face.
One championship is three events with 15 stages - all in dark/rain/fog. Seriously?
Multiplayer pro tour looks interesting but nobody is there to race against
Another 14 second pause in the middle of a ralley again

First six hours:
I don't think the complaints about handling are really an issue. Yeah, it is easier than Dirt Ralley but it is not a Ralley game. There is a lot of racing here and I can easily feel the difference between different cars, surfaces and weather. I can make small tweeks to setups and tell the changes.
Still looking forward to trying stadium trucks a-la Robbie Gordon, multiplayer, daily/weekly/monthly challenges, some more genres I have'n even looked at and some other area that is still locked. Switching to thumbs up.

Pros:
Love the music.
I don't have to grind to buy/unlock things like DR made me. Got just enough $ naturally.
Easy but still options to ratchet it up
Cars are consistent and believable, there are lots of them, and lots of tweeking options.
Weather randomness is a delight
Almost ran into a remote-controlled camera in the middle of a ralley - lulz

Cons:
I find the UI clunky and inhibitive. Too much clicking around to do anything.
Branding takes too long to open
Music shuts off when you go to the menu - no easy way to see music credits of what is "now playing"
Not enough options for painting cars / teams
Can only have one paint scheme - all cars change when you rebrand
Had two crashes to desktop while driving - none of my other Codemasters games ever did this.
Had one 15 second hangup in the middle of a corner where it all just stopped. Then suddenly started again.

First three hours:
Pro:
My daughter and I had fun in the testing area just goofing off. Prolly worth half the price.

Cons:
Install required after preinstall. Hours of my life I will never get back. Several retries and lots of waiting.
I've gotten more badge trading cards than they have places to race.
I've finished half the game with all aids of -,challenge (mid) difficulty - until I was so drunk I fell asleep. Still was winning.

Perspective: I am reading now that a lot of people find the game grows on them. That the first five hours are what makes you wonder what was in their heads. After that it starts meeting a sim racer's expectations. I also know from their other games that they listen and tweek as time goes on. Looking forward to that time and changing my review to positive.

Tl;DR
Recommend on sale with deep discounting.

I sure would have been pissed if I paid full price for this. Having picked it up for $20, I'm just occasionally annoyed but playing.

A good story as always, and I am looking forward to completing it. But the technical short-cutting is grating me in unexpected ways. I am getting over the fact that it doesn't work on my triple-screen monitor setup like every other modern game can do. Just the price we pay to have it on consoles that I will never use. But when I set everything to ULTRA so I can have an immersive experience and it cannot draw the lock-picking animation?

Now I'm finding areas like the quarry where I just clip through rocks, a car factory where door textures are glitched and I just pass through, floating loot, what am I going to find next? This has been out for seven months, I would have expected a bug pass by now.

The building was fun, until I figured out I could stack staircases togther and build an entire complex hanging out in the air with no support, it turned it from a sc-fi adventure to Garry's Mod. Different kind of fun, but totally immersion killing.

Cannot recommend at the full price. To me it is just Fallout 3 with color and that is not a $60 game. Get it on sale (%67+ off ) like I did.
