The top reason to play is fun gameplay.
The game is divided into four main activities:
- PvE: fighting mobs and gathering loot and experience
- Lifeskills: gathering and processing materials, farming, sailing and trading, training and breeding horses, etc.
- Quests: There's a main storyline for each region, some structured quest chains, an academy, and countless small quests
- PvP: Compete alone or with your guild to beat other players in combat
And one important sub-activity:
- Enhancement: your gear needs to be enhanced through RNG. this can be painful, but there is a pity system in place, and plenty of giveaways from events and login rewards. You can also buy your way out of unluckiness, as discussed later.

Each is meticulously designed by PA and continuously refined through feedback, making each activity feel worthwhile. A good point is that you can choose what interests you and do minimal amounts of whatever doesn't interest you (although you do eventually have to at least quickly skim over the main questlines, and grind enough experience to reach certain levels in order to unlock some other activities).

For an example of the constant improvement, I remember complaining in public chat about how boring it was to gather wood and stone, but a few months later, PA released a "green thumb" feature which provides a minigame that increases your gathering effectiveness and breaks the monotony.

The main drawback I see is that after completing the tutorial, everything is open to you at once. And even though the main quest introduces you to some basic gameplay, you will still be left knowing very little of what is needed to be a well-rounded player after you are done. They have added an academy to address this. But still, the number of different things you can do to improve your character and gear and magic crystals and magic artifacts and alchemy stones and houses and fleet and stable and workforce of laborers (yes it's a thing), not to mention time-limited events that give rewards, is BEWILDERING. You have to be able to put it all down and then go at your own pace, or you will go insane.

The game is beautiful and medieval themed on the light and idealistic side. The world design, character design, and musical score are high quality. There is also a heavy pop-culture element to cosmetics and events that you can enjoy if that's your thing. Remember there was a baby pygmy hippo that was popular a while back? That's a pet that you can get in the game.

You can customize your character's appearance down to the bone structure, and the outfits are beautiful with many combinable parts. This creates a rich visual experience where everyone around you looks unique. The characters default to heroic and supermodel-looking in figures. I understand the West has started to incorporate more inclusive looks, but BDO defaults to idealistic, and players usually leave it that way, or even ramp up with curviness and endowment. There are also cute children-looking and teen characters. A couple are playable characters. The important NPCs also often look heroic or even k-pop star handsome within their medieval theme.

This is a Korean game. If you're looking for superstar beauty, you got it.

The environment is beautiful, with a large open world, varied looking regions of different cultures, a lot of medieval realism as well as fantasy environments, and the 3D engine renders lighting and textures beautifully. Get a medium-to-good graphics card.

I would say the game is not f2p, but almost f2p. Of course you can play without paying a satang, but the experience is not as enjoyable without spending at least some small amount per year. If you spend wisely, spending time playing BDO will save you money compared to spending on new games or other online games. If money is not your concern, then you can have an easier time, stress out less about RNG, and also flex your amazing outfits. As mentioned before, there is a pity system, so you aren't compelled to buy to save yourself from unlucky rolls.

This is an MMORPG, so community matters. I like how the game leans into Southeast Asia/Thai themes during events. The players are generally not toxic, and griefing is rare. There are guilds aplenty and online resources to help you. Which you will need because again, the level of detail in the game is BEWILDERING.

You memorize combos made of keystrokes, and use them to build up buffs and debuff the enemy, as well as inflicting status effects and crowd control effects. Each character has his or her own moveset. Multiply this by the sheer number of characters and it feels chaotic and the complexity makes it difficult to understand the impact of choices you made to your setup. Other games have more enjoyable combat. But it's not the worst.

As previously mentioned, the theme is light and optimistic. Typically you meet people with problems, bash some monsters on the head with your sword, and then they praise you endlessly for being the most powerful fighter they've ever seen. It gets a bit repetitive. But the game characters do have interesting personalities and backstories and interactions. Within this optimism, the age the story is aimed for is still adult or young adult; the main stories are of hardship and betrayal and politics and corruption and archeology and faith. Events are mostly good old fun. Parties and fireworks and photo sessions with fellow players. You get to do things like fight giant turkeys on Thanksgiving and do a snowboarding tournament during winter.

With weighted categories (12 gameplay, then 6, 4, 4, 4, 6 in written order), I've computed a final score of 9. Missing it is not the end of the world, but definitely check it out if you're looking for an RPG or online game to play.
