Game has a small memory leaking, so getting an infinite loading screen going back to the main menu. Easy fix.

Outside of that the game is buttery smooth for me. Playing it on hard and it's a challenge. Definitely not suffering from it. Gameplay is fine. Feels Borderlands, the narrative is fun and funny at times (The Hump Hut is wild..) Open World was a good move, the mechanics feel good. Build potential is there.

Not much more to say than that. If you know Borderlands, you know what to expect.

This game needs to bake.

-Shotguns are way over-tuned on range.
-There's too much power creep with medics. Being able to use very good weapons while healing and also having high mobility means it's easy to stack this character in a squad and just run over lobbies.
-Jacks Launcher ability should come out instantly. There's no reason it should take over a second to launch and then another second to prime. Make the launch instant like Marquez's gas toss.
-The balance of maps are not good for conquest and tend to favor one side opening a match.
-Crosshairs on scopes are awful and thick. They need to be thin. Also there's no point to adding numbers to a scope since dropoff is barely considered. Just make clean, thin crosshairs.

There's a lot of other issues, like bot's being able to shoot through Ryan's shield. The recoil nerf actually ruined AR's at medium-to-long ranges. There's no reason I would use it over an SMG or DMR. Erwins glove is still acting funny and gives away a lot of locations.

I'll still be playing and supporting the game. It's just in a really jank state, and needs more time to cook.

Review is subject to change of these issues get addressed.

Towerborne is an upcoming Free to Play ARPG that follows several formula's to create a unique experience that provides a little bit of everything to appeal to almost any gamer. I'll go through it below.

What it's Like

Towerborne is very reminiscent of games like Double Dragon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or more recent titles like Elsword or Dungeon Fighter Online. Essentially, a side-scroller with a vertical plane, very beat-em-up-esque. The game has randomized loot drops, and is an online-only experience.

How it Plays

The game can be played on Mouse and Keyboard, but it's very recommended to play with a controller to get the best experience. For this Early Access iteration of the game, I'd say the combat experience is smooth, reactive, and flashy. You can pull off combos (light and heavy attacks), each complete with a finisher move at the end, along with charge attacks, staggers, stuns, lift-offs, and so on. The game currently offers you 4 classes:

Sentinel - Sword & Shield
Pyroclast - 2-handed War Mace infused with Fire.
Rockbreaker - Large Fist Weapons
Shadowstriker - Duel-wielding Daggers

The Sentinel currently focuses on utilizing their shield to block lighter attacks, and parry harder attacks. Note that some attacks must be dodged regardless. The shield will charge up over time, and when unleashed, will blocked everything around them for a short period of time

The Pyroclast has the ability to charge up their warclub with fire to unleash short ranged fire attacks that knock back enemies and cast them on fire.

The Rockbreaker has the ability to charge their fist up for a massive attack at 3 different levels. (They can also perform a flying elbow drop. 10/10)

The Shadowstriker throws their dagger and teleports to it unleashing a break attack against most enemies.

Each class has weapons that also come with what the game calls "Focus abilities." These can differ depending on the weapon, but a quick run down of some of what you can do includes dashing dealing damage, cloaking, swift combos, flying uppercuts, aoe stuns, etc etc etc. (Note that some enemies are immune to certain effects based on the actual enemy or the difficulty in which you play against them.) Each of these abilities provide a break damage amount of either low or high. Break damage is essentially damage you do to enemies that eventually put them into a stunned state.

The World

The world is pretty massive as it stands now. When you start the game, you'll begin your journey in the city of Belfry. There, you will be able to grab your quests, do your training, and upgrade or dismantle your loot. Based on the way the city is designed, it looks like they have more systems on the way. (like vendors and/or a bank.) I could be wrong here, so take this assumption with a grain of salt.

When you enter the world map you're presented with a massive fog of war and hexagon based tiles. The view of the world is an overhead point-of-view much like how JRPG's like the earlier Final Fanties or Chrono Trigger. Each tile you see around this map is a what the game calls a Discovery Missions. Discovery Missions are small RNG based maps that sometimes provide a challenges, or side quests within them. They can be straight up, point A to point B, missions or you can be in for a surprise at any point within them. At the end of any mission you do, you receive a chest of loot. Also to mention, there are breakable objects in these missions that will sometimes provide resources and even loot.

Once you complete a Discovery Mission, it unlocks that tile and the adjacent tiles around it, breaking the fog of war and allowing you to press on. Within the world, some tiles will have resources nodes that supply resources and aspects (more on aspects below,) and even chest that supply loot. Once you collect them, the world will then unlock the adjacent tiles around it. Eventually you'll make your way to what the game calls Venture Missions. Venture Missions are like the repeatable dungeons or instances of the game where the map is not rng based, normally longer than a Discovery Missions, and of course, has a boss at the end. Venture Missions will provide the character with 3-piece Set Bonus Gear. Clearing them on different difficulties will will give the player upgraded versions of that gear.

On a final note, Discovery Missions are not yet repeatable but should be coming in a future update for the game.

The Loot

The loot in this game based into 4 categories:

1 - Gear
2 - Weapons
3 - Aspects
4 - Umbra

Gear comes in 5 slots (Head, Shoulders, Chest, Waist, & Legs.) They provide a base armor stat, a gear score, and random affixes and suffixes to add variation to loot, ex. "Deadly Wildlings Sash of Defense." Gear can be used by any of the 4 classes, and is not locked to any particular class.

Weapons on the other hand are locked to classes, and also apply the same loot method.

Aspects are either weapon items or gear items that you can apply granting additional stats and proc's or buffs. They can give a chance to apply an affliction on hit, or guarantee a crit after the use of an attack or ability. And yes, these afflictions do stack.

Umbra's are creatures you find and unlock as you play through the world. Equipping an Umbra allows an additional ability for you to utilize during combat. Each have a number of unlimited uses at different cooldowns. While some Umbra abilities can be cast back-to-back without a wait, they have a cooldown timer per use. Other Umbra Abilities can call down a large single attack on a longer cooldown.

Appearance

Character customization is actually pretty good. Nothing super detailed like Black Desert, but there's enough there to help you differentiate yourself from others. I for instance, created a cute goblin waifu, and am constantly being stalked by other players (Please send help, I can smell their drool!) Jokes aside, you can straight up get goofy with it if you want.

The look of gear in this game is pretty presentable, but if you're not a fan of how something looks, you can change how they appear through the use of cosmetics that you earn from the Curios Store. The Curios Store is a cosmetic only store similar to that of Hell Divers 2. In Belfy, you unlock a job board that rewards you with Curios currency on a daily basis. You spend this currency in the Curious Store. Within the store, you have cosmetic modules that you have to unlock. Buying founders gives you the first cosmetic module. The way the module works is that as you unlock cosmetics with the currency, it eventually unlocks cosmetics in the next tier. These modules stay forever once unlocked. You must purchase keys in the future to unlock future modules. These modules only disappear after a month of not purchasing them, which is the only FOMO presented in the game. Price for these modules is currently unknown to me.

Transmog is not yet in the game, but is currently heavily voted on in the feedback section of the games official discord server.

Final Thoughts
This review is getting a little long, so I'll end it here. If this seems like your cup of tea, and can't wait for the release (Free to Play,) hop into the founders and help the game grow into something you want to see it become. Do note that this game will have a progression wipe before release. But the gameplay is engaging and those who grew up in an era where Streets of Rage and Battle Toads were addictive and challenging -- This game is like a love letter to those experiences. Towerborne has massive potential and a very fair monetized system. I highly recommend it.

Thank you for reading.

It's Half-Life without Gordon Freeman. As a scientist in a secret, massive underground laboratory, you must work with other members of this establishment to find your way back to the surface. Progression is done through discovery and crafting. You'll fight off military factions, aliens, and other things I refuse to mention.

I put in 16 straight hours of this beautiful game and I'm still trucking along. It's awesome.

Edit: I have no idea why it says 10 hours played, when I'm sitting at close to 30 hours.. Weird.

This game is crazy ambitious.

>Talk to Homie at home.
>Gives me a weapon (I choose Greatsword.) and a donkey.
>Slay's Goblins for first time. Satisfying.
>Head off to adventure.
>Take Camp in a nearby forest. It's time to explore.
>Get attacked by wolves and Skellies. Wasn't too hard.
>See a bouncing Mushroom thing heading towards me. I lunge at it.
>Mushroom absolutely destroys me and ragdolls me across the map.
>Load checkpoint.
>Find a spell that drops tombstones out of the sky.
>Relocate Mushroom, assert dominance with new found spell.
>Use donkey to explore more quickly.
>Level up a few times and obtain an ability to leap attack.
>Find out I can wall run.
>Wall Run + Leap attack = Medieval Michael Jordan.
>Find no need for donkey as I can now soar half a football field.
>Make my way to top of mountain.
>Speak with sky dad. Commands me to slay. Say no more.
>I slay, Obtain the ability to get on my knees and pray.
>I pray for a swift death against my future enemies.
>Fish for an hour.
>Living my best life.

Seriously, this game for what it is right now, is very fun. And it's not even completed yet. Only 4 hours in, but it's evident that this developer is all hands in on loading us up with content and experiences. Want to run faster? Simple run. Want to jump higher? Just jump a lot. This takes me back to Morrowind's leveling system, where the more you do something, the experience you gain goes to whatever that is. It feels like he really put in the work to make you as the player feel in absolute control of how you want to play.

But that's not to say this game isn't a rough gem. There's a plethora of missing keybind's in the options menu, the building in the game is a little jank, and there's several bugs that can hinder the experience. For instance, you can climb in this game, and there's little experience orbs you can make it to that give you additional experience for climbing. For some reason, I reached one, it didn't register, and all of the sudden, my character couldn't climb up or down despite having plenty of stamina. Found out that if I find something to mine, or chop down, it fixes the climbing. It's like a tedious way to switch out movement actions in order to make that work.

Speaking of which, the way you gather materials outside of just foraging, gives you little mini games which I found to be very pleasant.

And lastly, I did a little bit of digging into the .ini files and saw a few commands for VR. So whether or not this will eventually have VR compatibility as well as controller support is up for speculation, but I'd be super happy if he includes both as this game progresses.

All-in-all, I'd recommend the game just for the experience. The game is far from complete, but the ground work is there, and with a project this ambitious, I feel supporting this developer is well worth the money I spent on his game.

This is actually a Souls game. It's in the fact on how the game scales in terms of difficulty that pulls it into the souls category. In the past, AC game's were actually never this difficult. There were a few fights that gave some challenge, that would require players to make small adjustments to their AC, and they were much less bullet hell than this. A lot of builds were more viable. In this, there seems to be a "Goto" build for every boss fight. It limits the accountable customization you can have with your AC.

Most missions are plain easy, but swiftly throws players off the moment they encounter a boss, leading them to have to grind and change their AC around to accommodate that fight, specifically (Aka Meta's.). This has never been the way of Armored Core in the past. And I feel like this is going to draw in a lot of hate from veterans who played from the first title up.

People who are use to games like Elden Ring are not going to find this game very difficult, but a lot of players who see AC6 are going to expect a more casual experience, which is not the case anymore.

I will continue to play it as I have all the other AC's, but this one is my least favorite in the franchise right now.
