Play this game for fun only. The game is fun, but the flaws outweighs the value the game has to offer for me. If you plan to try this game competitively, I would strongly recommend against it, unless you can disconnect from the mentality of winning or losing means you're good or bad at the game. Having an incredibly good or bad match in this game can be boiled down to poor matchmaking.

I wouldn't recommend this game because of the following issues:

1) Casual focused

This game's development is focused solely on casual development, and therefore many of the heroes are severely over or undertuned to increase the enjoyment of the playerbase, rather than balancing.

2) Matchmaking

The matchmaking system is confusing and many players believe this is the product of EOMM (Engagement-based Matchmaking) which focuses on player enjoyment rather than balanced matches.

I feel this to be true. This is prevalent even in Quick-Play. If you lose a certain number of times against players in Quick Play, you'll get matched against bots against your will for 1 game. 2-3 losses in a row = 1 bot match.

In Competitive if you win too many games in a row, the game gives you 1 or 2 nearly impossible matches to win. The opposite happens if you lose too much. If you lose too many games in a row the game gives you an incredibly easy game to win. Other games due this as a gauge of skill, however I feel it's far more unbalanced in this game, as the matches feel incredibly one-sided at times.

In Quick-Play, the matchmaking is non-existent. I'm a Celestial player, which is a pretty high rank in Rivals, and I was matched on the same team with a One Above All player, the highest possible rank, against a bunch of Gold and newer players on the enemy team. That seemed just... unfair. I don't really see how that makes sense.

3) Toxic community

The toxicity in this game is the most I've ever seen in a long time. It's about as toxic as League of Legends, but perhaps more-so because there's voice chat. I feel that these things need more enforcement or something because the amount of verbal abuse from this game is astronomical.

4) Rank disparity

If you research the ranking system, you'll notice that more players are in Grandmaster (1 rank below Celestial) than in any other rank. Silver doesn't have that many players in comparison, and there's millions in Bronze, because there's no placements for this game so everyone starts at Bronze.

The ranking is this game gives a false sense of accomplishment, and can lead to players feeling they're learning, when the system is taking pity on them instead. This is probably the only game I've played where you can climb with a 40% winrate. It's only when you hit high Grandmaster when this becomes less prevalent, and begins to equalize.

5) Massive smurf problem

This game suffers from an enormous smurfing problem. Players can make a separate account and level to 15 (used to be 10) to begin playing competitive. Which takes less than a day to reach. In comparison, it takes about a week in games like League of Legends to reach the level required for competitive.

Due to the lack of placements in this game, smurfing players can play at the lowest rank "Bronze 3" and simply just steamroll new players as much as they want.

A good solution to this could be adding placements so that players have to play games to gauge their skill. And I feel the level cap for ranked should be raised higher.

6) (Personal Opinion) The game is heavily centralized around immunity support ults

The formula for this game can be annoying.
- Support ults
- Up to 12 seconds of full team immortality
- Other support ults
- Up to 12 seconds of full team immortality

-> Enemy team copies this pattern too

-> Rinse, repeat

Now you can still die in support ults, but it's incredibly difficult, you are *almost* immortal. There are 1shotting heroes, if you're lucky (or incredibly precise) with your aim. There are also a few ults that can kill supports to cancel their ultimates. But it's not super common.

*Final Thoughts*

I enjoy playing this game. But cannot recommend it. If you decide to play, just be sure to grab a friend, or mute all and just play for fun and for you own sake.

I was skeptical whether this game would be worth $70. After playing it for a few hours I can pretty confidently say that it's definitely worth it.

They went above and beyond for this game. The voice acting is better, the graphics are just beautiful, the game runs pretty well and I've had no crashes, and the game is faithful to the original while adding a bit of its own spin on things.

I love to see developers not afraid to push the limits and be creative. Even though its a remake, they still made decisions for themselves while staying faithful. This is how I feel a remake should be, and it's exactly what this studio accomplished.

Well done.

I don't think it's a big deal, but one thing I feel that's funny is that James never opens doors and kind of just runs into them. He kind of just places his hand on the door for a brief second and then rams his body into it. I laughed when I first saw it.

Amazing. Simply incredible.
This game has all the flavor of previous Ratchet and Clank games and they just had to go and make everything beautiful on top of it.

Here's a couple things to keep in mind before getting the game, though.

1) As of right now of writing this, early August 2023, there are quite a lot of bugs and performance issues with this game. If you can ignore all that as this game just came out on PC, then this game is just... a beautiful game, and amazing throwback.

2) Enemies tend to get repeated quite a lot. Sometimes harder enemies just appear in greater numbers rather than showing new ones. While this didn't personally bother me much, it is something to keep in mind.

Excellently priced for the amount of the content you receive in this game currently. The game is fairly straight forward, and is almost more like an arcade version of the original Outlast that you can play with friends. Instead of a single-player story, you play a series of missions that are better played with friends or in a random group; using the in-game group finder. It still looks, feels, and plays like Outlast. But now there's skills and upgrades. The AI is also surprisingly intelligent, they'll catch you off guard lots of times. The Outlast Trials is well-thought-out for a trials-based co-op horror game.

You could argue that the scary elements in this game is easily recognizable after a few missions (trials, they call them). The good news is, the game is enjoyable and well designed enough that even when you've learned everything, things will still surprise you every now and then. There's just enough minor elements that even when you think you know it all, you forget the minor details while trying to worry about other pressuring elements, and end up getting surprised by them in the end.

Now this game isn't without its flaws. The repetitive nature of this game may drive players away. The game was designed to be repeated with the reward being a higher level for your character, more skills and perks, and currency to buy cosmetic items to customize your character more and the room you're provided to which others can see. Each time you re-enter a mission, every aspect of that mission is randomized. Enemy locations are different, traps are different, doors are different, and items are different. Due to the game being early-access the game is also riddled with quite a lot of bugs. But only a couple game-breaking I have seen so far. Just today it seems they may have fixed the most critical bugs, which is a healthy sign that Red Barrels plans to maintain and update the game. There is also only about 20 hours worth of trials and missions to do, depending on how long it takes for you to finish missions, this may vary.

I feel like this game was an ambitious experiment by the Outlast developers. And with the state things are with the game right now, I feel like it was a success. They nailed it. The game has enough content and progression to not feel boring even when repeating missions. The missions are scary enough that even after playing through missions multiple times, I still find myself hiding and trying to avoid entities and obstacles. The game's multiplayer has no noticeable issues, and you get nicely rewarded when playing with others.

They have special multiplayer actions that make playing with a friend more enjoyable than playing alone, but they also make the single-player experience feel fair, so playing alone isn't a bad thing to do either.

I'm very surprised by the level of self-awareness and confidence this game has. An excellent mark in the co-op horror genre, and a welcomed one. I hope Red Barrels continues to add more content to keep things fresh, and I look forward to seeing what more they come up with in the future.

Overall: 8/10 - An excellent take on co-op horror, which will give players hours of fun with friends, even though that fun may only last for a couple weeks until the next update.
