Remember World in Conflict?

Well, this is it now, but on a much grander scale.

As someone who loved WIC as a kid back in the day and who sadly did not get a chance to experience its multiplayer, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the announcement trailer for Broken Arrow back in 2021.

This is a modern military, combined arms, multiplayer real-time strategy on a grand scale.

It is played five versus five, on large maps consisting of urban environments like large cities, rural areas, forests, and open landscapes.

Each player is equipped with a fully customizable deck of units. This is your modern military sandbox, and your gameplay experience will vary based on what you pick and choose.

Will you roll out your heavy tanks through the streets with impunity?

Will you support the push of your friendly units by showering the enemy with artillery?

Will you unleash fighter jets and fight for air superiority?

Broken Arrow is not a flawless game, even after years of development, it could have used some more time in the oven. After a rocky launch, the game still lacks a working reconnect feature and has stability issues. I am, however, assured that these issues will be ironed out down the line.

If you are a fan of combined arms warfare and real-time strategy, this is a game for you.

There's a very good reason why Supergiant Games are regarded as an Indie Giant. In the last decade, they have proven again and again that they can do any genre and knock it out of the park.

Sadly, Pyre did not make it into the mainstream like Bastion or Hades did. I can only imagine how much love and care was sunk into this game. Every frame is a painting, from the over-world map to the arenas and to the characters themselves, this game is just so beautiful to look at, and the music, oh the music.

I swear I a have feeling that Pyre came from a song, Darren Korb the man behind Supergiant's soundtracks is a mystical bard who got lost in time and the music he composed is a reflection of his journey. With vocalist Ashley Barrett, these two have created some of the most wonderful soundtracks in all of gaming. Pyre is just brimming with incredible talent, with Logan Cunningham as the Voice weaving it all together.

The lore of this game is quite dense and very original, I hope Supergiant keeps creating games with their unique and original ideas after Hades 2. Maybe down the line, we get to return to the Downside or even Commonwealth.

It is hard to describe this game to someone who's never played it, but the man himself described it as:

"Choose-your-own-Adventure crossed with a strange, RPG-laced, mystical sports game battle system. Pyre is the most original thing Supergiant has made and the least recognisable. Yes, that's a good thing"

There's just something really special about working for imaginary evil corporations.

This is a work simulation. Through and through, you are a shipbreaker, you salvage ships, nothing more to it. Every ship is a puzzle, from the small passenger vessels to heavy cargo haulers and mining rigs. They are hulking lifeless pieces of technology waiting to be disassembled for parts, and you're the one doing the heavy lifting.

With the guitar-driven tracks of Americana playing in your ears, at the frontiers of the industrialized space, with your tools in your hands, this game can reach zen moments like no other. There's a dopamine-like satisfaction in disassembling a ship perfectly, and all the pieces matter.

The story of the game is nothing to write home about, the voice work is pretty fine, cutscenes are acceptable and serviceable, it seems like there was another story in place for the game while it was in early access, but to be honest, this game is all about the gameplay.

The ship design is pretty neat, very homeworldesque, but they do sometimes feel pretty empty and bland, there's no lived-in feeling to them, a couple of audio logs, but they don't really portray what the ship was all about and who were the people that used it, part from the ghost ships, ships that were found at the edge of space and are now invaded by rogue AI.

I really hope we get more of this. It seems like there are no plans for DLC, but a sequel with expanded features and more ships would be amazing.

After all of these updates, the game is still an inconsistent at times playable mess.

Season 6 was pushed out the door to counter the same weekend MW3 was coming out, in essence, the update was a really good addition to the game, and it would matter in the end if the game even worked.

After every map, you get a black screen, forcing you to shut down the game entirely, utterly breaking any squad play, having to rejoin and re-invite, unable to launch the game after multiple tries with no hot-fixes on the horizon.

What baffles me the most is the utter garbage that is the EA app, I honestly thought there would be no way it would be as bad as Origin, it's an even worse dumpster fire that has no reason to exist, how a multi-billion company like EA is so incompetent in making a simple, stable launcher is beyond me.

After a disastrous launch, multiple seasons and quality updates that barely kept the player base alive, EA shot this game in the leg, then in the arm and now in the head.

They are closing their doors on this game and moving on, kudos to DICE for trying, I hope this franchise survives this, a franchise I grew up with and loved playing, a franchise well known and beloved turned into this abomination.

What more is there to add to the overwhelming praise of Larian Studios and Baldur's Gate 3?

They've done the impossible, not through some sheer luck, but through pure dedication, hard work, but most importantly their open communication with the community and how they utilized player feedback in creating this game.

Panels From Hell were one of the most fun ways they interacted with the community, patch by patch, year by year. As their studios grew, so did the game.

Developers call this game an anomaly, but in truth, it is so much more than that. As if things just fell in place for them, as if they got lucky.

Larian's build up to Baldur's Gate did not come overnight. Its foundations can be seen in Divine Divinity, released back in 2002.

The Divinity series had its ups and downs, with Original Sin 1 and 2 knocking it out of the park. A perfect timeline and synopsis can be created just by looking at the games they have released throughout the years. Larian is a prime example of a developer mastering its craft and improving upon the formula.

It all started with a guy from Belgium and a dream of creating the ultimate role-playing game, which he did.

Swen Vincke is a charismatic guy in heavy armor, who just loves games. He channels creativity and love for games, bringing people of the same mindset together.

The art, sound, story, characters, writing and gameplay all come together in the weave like harmony that forms this ultimate role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms.

As a spiritual successor to System Shock, Prey took the formula of immersive sim and evolved it into something quite unique and special.

It's a real shame that the game undersold commercially since people were expecting something close to an FPS game like Doom, this was mostly due to Bethesda forcing the name "Prey" onto anything that would stick and not realizing how many people were fans of the original IP who were also bummed out by the cancellation of Prey 2.

Arkane knows how to make DLCs worth your time, which they proved with the Dishonored series, but with Prey they literally knocked it out of park. Mooncrash is an amazing rogue-lite experience that received literally no marketing, it released one year after the original game was out, even now you can only find SkillUp's video just straight up praising Mooncrash.

I think at one point, people are going to realize what they missed out on, this game is going to be the cult classic for many years to come, no other immersive sim comes even close to it.

Everyone should play the mind game.
