First off: don't expect Dawn of War when coming into this game. Though it may also be a Warhammer title the two games take very different approaches to the RTS genre and offer different types of gameplay.

With that out of the way I want to say I loved my time with this game. The campaign/story is a ton of fun to go through and is incredibly well done and worth the entry. The characters are interesting, the variety of missions is great, the story is engaging enough to keep you wanting more, the voice acting is phenomenal, and the cinematography in cutscenes is better than many many other games. It's not often you get well-framed shots in a game! Serious hats off to whoever was in charge of that.

The gameplay itself is also quite a lot of fun but could use some tweaks as other reviews have mentioned. It's not a grand detractor from the game but the pace of gameplay is a bit slow as units physically move a bit sluggish. It's easy to see why that is the case as you play it though as the devs seem to be focusing on small groups/unit gameplay instead of massive hordes/armies. While the game relies on a triangle system for combat (sword beats shield, shield beats bow, bow beats sword) it forces you to move your units into place to best counter your opponent and being able to time that well enough to move quicker than your foe is where some of the tactical aspect really kicks off. Basically, the better you are at telling what your opponent will use the better you can prepare and ambush them.

I will say I have not tried the online portion of this game and I'm unsure if I will. For RTS games I typically stick to story/campaign/skirmish/conquest with AI and will likely do so here. I did play a few skirmish games against AI to try out other factions and that seemed to be fun - though I do wish there was a better way to see the map you are choosing for it.

Also a minor - but fun - element I havent seent talked about in reviews is the in-game army painter feature. You can customize the look of your whole army or even individual units by picking what colors you want them to be. Not a whole lot of customization outside of that but it's fun!

Hope the Devs are able to make a sequel or at least a continuation of the story in some way. I'll be there for the next one.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Hailing from The Coincidental Arena in the year 114 was a caravan of Dwarves determined to make their mark upon the land. Boldly facing the unknown they settled their fortress facing the great ocean and called it Amostmegid - Townslid.

The beginnings months were fraught will toil and hardship as the landscapes were scarce with trees, plant life, and no fresh water to speak of. Beds, barrels, and more were put on hold as the wood supplies ran out. Drink and food were hard to come by, with many a day going by where the stocks were near empty.

Yet the Dwarves persisted to a stubborn fault in this new land. They dug and dug, finding spaces under the earth to begin planting crops and even place their workshops and beds.

And soon their stubborn defiance would pay off. As they dug they began to strike precious metals - first gems such as Onyx or Tigers Eye, Jasper and Amethyst, but then came the discovery of native Gold and Silver in vast abundance. Their starvation and thirst had paid off, for none alive had seen such quantities of metals before and all in one place.

Soon none were complaining. Had they not been lucky to find such a place in the wilderness? To establish a home without wood or water? Were they not the Dwarves whose names would go down in history as building this mighty Fortress?

So when Lorban Erargeshud was found dead in his room, drained of life, they waved it off as another harsh reality of the world. When word arrived that the enormous wealth of their Fortress was spreading in the land like wildfire they laughed. For they were Dwarves made hard by this land and none but they could master it. What fool would dare attack?

So when the Marsh Titan Jirdo Slusteagwa Ziznubposlek Tuma arrived they were caught defenseless.

A beast made of living mud, it oozed, slopped, and reformed its way across the land as it barreled toward the Fortress that gleamed with gold. Townslid's defenses activated, its doors shut, the drawbridge raised, as all entrances were sealed away from the beast. But even doors of iron failed to stand as the Beasts' maw shot out webs and tore it asunder, sending the Titan inside. The military, still but a babe since its creation a few months prior, were slaughtered to the Dwarf in the span of a few minutes as webs coated the halls. The remaining citizens fared little better as they were hunted, one-by-one, by a beast that never slept.

The 'battle' over, the beast victorious, the creature began to tour its new lair with gurgling pleasure. But a sole Dwarf had survived - Erib Kalanthob, Dwarven Child, only two years of age. She was carried by her mother during the attack by Jirdo and by luck or unfortunate fate she was spared when her mother was cut down before her. The two tumbled down the stairwell leading to the mines below before coming to a rest 7 floors later, side by side. Erib’s limbs and lower body were shattered beyond recognition and she could do no more than lay, terrified and distraught, gazing at the body of her mother besides her. It would be days before she would pass.

And thus ended Amostmegid - Townslid - the Fortress of Gold.
