A fines de 1872, la Imprenta de la Pampa dio a conocer un folleto de ochenta páginas y de unos quince centímetros por veinte: era El gaucho Martín Fierro y lo había escrito José Hernández, en apenas unas semanas, mientras se encontraba en Buenos Aires parando en el Hotel Argentino tras un tiempo de proscripción política. La edición era modesta y tuvo una tirada de pocos ejemplares que se pusieron a la venta a bajo precio y rápidamente se agotaron. El poema constaba de treinta y tres estrofas de versos octosílabos agrupados en sextinas y divididos en trece cantos, en los que su autor presentaba la autobiografía ficcional de su protagonista y, siguiendo la tradición de otros poemas gauchescos, lo hacía usando la voz del propio gaucho.
